Key remapping problems - Impacts Accessibility and More

  • The ability to remap key bindings is great, whether it is to retain familiar locations for functionality in other games or for those who have some physical limitations and difficulty hitting certain keys with certain fingers. The problem is that Sea of Thieves has many instances of hard-coded keys which do not "update" their key mapping to be consistent with the change made.

    For example:

    I change Interact from F to E.
    I change Stow/Drop from X to C.

    When I open a barrel after making these changes, I see the following. These are consistent with the default keymap, and did not change after my remap.
    R = Take
    F = Take All
    X = Close

    In this case, I would expect it to change based on my remappings above.
    R = Take
    E = Take All
    C = Close

    This is just one example of where the mappings do not update, there are others, but this serves to explain the situation.

  • @quiggleton I whole heartedly agree. Im sick of it.

  • This certainly needs to be addressed.

    Until then, can you try leaving the settings alone in game and enabling a keyboard remap outside?
    I know it's more work, but it could get you the results you need to play until it is fixed.

  • These are great ideas. The more options the better.

  • In some other games which forget to update some of these keymappings, its possible to just edit a text config file and update them, but I do not see any files associated with this app :(

    That is one option, unfortunately it would make it impossible to type in chat when talking to other crews :( But I am glad you agree and thanks for replying!

  • The game lacks a lot of QOL for PC, it's very frustrating :

    -I changed my keyboard localization to AZERTY, but when I interact with barrels, I still need to use "E" and "Q" to switch from my inventory to the barrel.

    -Closing menus is inconsistent; to close a barrel you press "x", to close a NPC menu you press escape.

    -When you rebind your map wheel key to "F" (which is a common thing for people that swapped their interaction key to "E"), there is no way to display more than 8 maps because the "show more" keybind is, by default "F" and can't be changed..

    -And the one that annoys me the most : The game doesn't allow me to set my scoped sensitivity to a high enough value for Flintlocks / Blunderbuss / EOR for me to feel comfortable when I aim. The first PC game I've ever played in more than 15 years that doesn't let me go high enough.

    Also there is litterally no reason to NOT allow the mouse sensitivity to MATCH (and not exceed) the speed at which you can aim a cannon when using "WASD" (or a controller).
    It would be a good QOL change since no one likes to aim with a 4/8 direction pad.

  • I raised this a while back. Nothing's changed as yet. :(

    I don't use WASD, never have. As such all the 'extra' keys aren't on the same side of the keyboard that I use. I have to literally stop what I'm doing and look at the keyboard to get out of barrel menus etc. Proper pain in the posterior!

  • I feel better not being alone in this! Hopefully this thread can be seen?

  • @quiggleton Yeah this is really annoying. I would raise a support ticket. I'm sure they are aware but the more people that raise a ticket the more likely they are to address it.
