I can't hear people in-game.

  • I am having an issue where I can't hear people talk in-game, even though the speech/chat bubble appears when they try to talk.

I also noticed that my Sea of Thieves and Game Bar have clone programs at times in my "Volume Mixer" in windows, their slider is set to 1 (one) and greyed out so I can't modify it.

    How do I fix this?

  • Hi, I had an issue a few weeks ago very similar where I could not hear people or even see their typed messages. Instead of audio, it could very much be suddenly related to your Xbox/microsoft account settings. If you log in to your microsoft account, go down to your privacy settings and you should see a section titled "You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text" make sure it is turned on to "Allow". I have never messed with this setting, but for some reason it was turned off and muted all my in game chat functions.

If it is truly audio related I'm afraid I don't know what to do... microsoft has never played well with SOT audio functions :(

  • @cutecoffins I unfortunately already have those settings enabled, and I still can't hear players in-game, that is the only audio/communication issue I am having, I can hear everything else normally.

I suspect it has something to do with the ghost/duplicate programs I see in my "Open volume mixer", having their slider stuck at 1 (one), greyed out so I can't modify it, I suspect that will resolve my issue.

  • @thiccnwide Do you happen to be in the UK? If so, it could be requiring an xbox age verification.

If you happen to have a VPN or some external operating system be sure to switch that off, as it can mess with stuff like audio.
