Weapon system feedback.

  • I've been playing for only a wee while due the aniversary edition, so if other legends have different opinions or knowledge that I don't please let me know. I like learning!

    So my current weapons understanding:

    • A pirate has two weapons slots.
    • Can chose to have two guns or sword and gun.
    • Can't have two swords (tested), nor two guns of same type (???)
    • Three gun types: sniper, pistol, blunderbuss for long, mid, and short ranges.
    • Guns have shots available to them (???)
    • Can only restock on bullets from ammo crates.
    • Only 1 melee weapon type: cutlass... Can guard, 3 slashes before puffed, and thrust

So my thoughts about this design:

The two slots seem a bit limiting given the dirth of choices available. Using two guns is discouraged due to lack of ammo crates on islands, and the risk of being defenceless if a foe with a cutlass attacks you... Atleast with 3 slots you can have a sword and two guns.

It would be nice if two other melee weapons are added following the short / mid / long range format of guns. Perhaps a spear that you can choose to thrust and throw (then pick it up); a knife that is shorter than a sword but can slash and attack faster... Maybe a hatchet / wodden mallet... It would be cool if the skeletons also used these new weapons to add diversity to NPC battles as well.

It would be cool if tapping the guard as soon as an attack hits does a parry punch / kick with their off (hand / hook) and (leg / peg), respectively. I'd love to be able to have a good swashbuckle dance battle with other pirates with a more deep combat system.

Also, would be cool to have hand bombs (skull and cross cannonball with a fuse). Light the fuse the throw them, roll them, drop them. Others can pinch the fuse then toss it back... maybe shooting a bomb explodes it? Interesting possibilities, and lots of fun. (Looking at other posts before posting I can see pirates do think alike!) @HARRISONtheFOGO, @BloodyBil, @Arsigi

So what are other's thoughts about combat?

  • Your understanding of the current setup looks correct to me.

I would love to see a little more variety in the combat area, even though I am no hardcore pvp-er. Some sort of grenade or other small throwable explosive would be great. A throwing spear is not something that I had thought of before - could be interesting, especially if one could pick up another player’s thrown spear and throw it back!

Personally, I would like to see some sort of jump limit or minor cool down. When two or more players are just bouncing around while trying to randomly get a good shot on one another, it just looks and feels a bit silly. I would rather there be less bouncing and more actual strategic fighting.

  • I love the new weapons topic expanding how it is. More and more ideas are coming out with different ways on how we can make this fantastic game even better. We are all used to the weapons we currently have and adding a throwable grenade or on my post about this someone brought up a loose cannon idea where you can run around with it and shoot it but it will greatly decrease your speed, like when running with a treasure chest. Or a musket with a bayonet knife on it instead of a scope so when the gun runs out you can use the bayonet as a sort of sword that has limited combos like a jab and a slash. I don't know how long it would take to implement our ideas or if its possible but i think it could really change things for this game and give people a chance to have to form new strategies to protect against these new weapons.

I agree with the jump spamming. I think PC gamers are accustomed to this though so bout time to wean them off the space bar, lol.

I like the idea of being able to return to sender. That's why I think a 3 weapon slot would be good because you can temporarily pick up a thrown weapon and either hold on to it so the enemy needs to find something else / adapt OR throw it back...

Could also mean you can stow a grenade for stragegic use...

Though, my recent fear about 3 weapon slots is that people could exploit 2-3 blunderbusses to just auto-shotgun a person to death. I researched the history of damage and see a point blank from a Blunder can kill people; hence why they're very popular.

    ...and kill me so often!

  • @harrisonthefogo

When I was writing this I thought dual-weilding swords and pistols would be rather cool. Since flintlocks took so long to reload, pirates would carry multiple and use a cutlass for personal defense. It'd give people a reason to carry two swords or two pistols...

...however, make the off hand independent of the dominant hand would require new animations and animation system. Then you'd have to sync them to avoid glitchy effects. Then you'd have to write the new control system. Too much effort taking away from content; but I must admit it would be fun to hold a bananna in one hand and a sword in another (I've been shot and need to heal, chomp OR stick em up!)... Bannana Pistol please Rare, lol!

Loose cannon and a cluster mortar would be interesting to use. What about a catapult. Launch friends, treasure, powder kegs, items... Tools are just weapons you haven't use to hurt people with yet.

I personally would like fire and voodoo to be available within the game enviornment. Fire as in your boat can catch fire and you need to estinguish it. You can catch fire and run around semi-uncontrolled but faster and need to jump into water, or get splashed by a bucket, or pat yourself to estinquish it... Voodoo you can use to convert skeletons into allies temporarily, sacrificing some health to activate spell effects similar to the curses on cannonballs.

I like the idea of spears because you could use them for sea monster hunting. A sword isn't much help against a Megladon, lol...

  • @odysseyhome Pirates use harpoons, not spears.

  • @odysseyhome I defiantly think duel wielding would be cool but at the same time for the balance of the game where it is now is where I'm most comfortable. doubling up on gins used to be the move but now with the update you can shoot your two weapons back to back so everyone and their brother are now carrying a sword. I just love talking about different ways to add more weapons into the game because without weapons in the game it would be impossible. Hopefully Rare takes a look at all of our posts and takes us up on one of our ideas to add something new to this game that could really make this game extra special!

  • My opinion from italy:

    1. Pirates used more and different types of guns like Axes, Daggers, Crossbow, "Molotov".. so only 3 in game isnt much..
    2. Pirates used explosive cannon balls in the history but still not in game.. Cursed balls are better?

Dont talk about fight dinamics but please update the game. @OdysseyHome @HARRISONtheFOGO @Arsigi

  • @xxzataxx well bud we are just throwing out options but explosive cannonballs would really cause problems because we already have exploding barrels imagine the chaos with exploding cannonballs. I like the idea of molotovs so that would be pretty cool.

Whalers use harpoons, pirates just steal them from em ;)

  • @xxzataxx What do you mean about 'fight dynamics' and why shouldn't I talk about them?

I should clarify that I'm not being indignant but curious...

    uhm actually (collegehumour skit)

    Pirates use boarding pikes

  • @squaz05 Oh I so need on of them right now! Please Rare please!

  • @odysseyhome
I like your weapon ideas, but 2 slots are enough. Any more and people would start becoming Jackd of all trades in combat.

  • @blazedrake100 That's a fair point; and links into my fear of double blunderbus loadouts...

A compromise is to make the slots for specific gear.

    melee slot (Knife, Cutlass, Pike)
two-hand gun slot (Blunder / EoR)
one-hand gun slot (grenade / pistol)

Swap to two handed gun by holding switch. Cycle melee and one handed by tapping.

This is more inline with what I was thinking; I'm trying to think of a way to give the pistol some love.

  • @odysseyhome
The pistol is the best gun imo. It's strength is it's versatility. The blunderbuss is extremely good at short range, the eor is extremely good at long range, and the pistol is good at both. Even with types of slots, people would be Jack's of all trades. There's only 2 slots so you have to make hard choices for what weapons you want.

  • 3Weapon slots would be honestly awesome, but i don't see it happening, sadly.
If the so called "boarding axe" becomes a reality they better do it though.

  • @blazedrake100 So when do you choose to go pistol, Blunder, or EoR? Do you ever two gun?

In my play I find pistol + EoR when sailing. Sword + Blunder when boarding. Sword + Pistol when on islands... Though I've been trying to learn to snipe and have been having fun with the EoR.

I maybe thinking too tactically about a system ultimately born for preference. I'll try giving the pistol another chance against the skeletons...

  • brilliant ideas, I think a throwable explosive is a great idea, it definitely should get added, I think there should be different cannonballs like a chain shot that does extra damage to the sails, a cluster shot which is a big shell that have to be carried by two players, it is filled with muskets, it is basically a big shotgun.

  • Pirates didn't really use spears or any other polearms that I'm aware of. Boarding axes were common, and would be a welcome addition to the game. There's some evidence the developers have considered it, since there are axe handles found around the game. Primitive grenades were also fairly common and were known as powder flasks. And of course every pirate would have a dagger or knife of some fashion.

I think two weapon slots keeps things interesting and don't see any need to change that. I could see adding a "dagger only" slot if daggers were introduced.

  • @odysseyhome
I don't double gun ever, except for maybe golds. Then I use eor and blunderbuss, they have a high damage output, but again, are meant to be specialized. This is also risky, because of reload times and running out of ammo. IMO, it should stay like that.
