Sea of Thieves ...PCGames... Review

  • A good review for those new to the game, or those thinking about raising anchor.
Not as such a critical review... more a play experience review.

Looking at articles like these... reminds me how far we have come... It's pretty awesome!

  • Indeed we came far and we are not stopping here, this year is going to be awesome for Sea of Thieves.

  • @piratecraggy Ayee! The game has come along great! I can’t wait to see how the mega update adds to everything also! March can’t come quick enough!

  • @piratecraggy

An interesting mixed review there, I think I agree with this statement towards the end though -

Sea of Thieves manages to push the pieces into place far more often than not, and dependably manages to inspire its players to play along with the pirate magic that keeps everyone engaged.

Yeah.. I think he would be a more casual player than most of us.
Jumping on occasionally is the drift I get from his article, with that... possibly a more neutral stance comes with a few of his comments.

His explanation of how a "Galley" crew works for example... ( I'm guessing it's maybe how he plays the game, maybe ) seems more for effect.

"It’s a truly cooperative process, at that. A galleon has three sails, each of which has to be individually set and turned to capture the wind for whatever speed you want to sail at. You’ll need someone in the crow’s nest to look out for unknown dangers on the horizon, and then someone at the bow to watch as you come into port and give the order to drop anchor before you hit a deceptive shallow.
Hopefully you’ve got someone left over to check the map below deck, shouting up directions to the rest of the crew about which direction you need to aim for."

I don't think most of us sail with a full crew... one in the crows nest & one on the bowsprit as a matter of course... etc.
For me there is an awful lot in between. But I get his general drift, probably just an explanation of the possible mechanics.

    He mentions at one point.

"There aren’t any upgrade trees, powerful weapons to unlock, or major quest lines to follow. That can be baffling for some, but there’s a respectable adherence to design philosophy behind that: every pirate spends the entire game on even footing."

A point worth making, but at least he appears to respect the design decision.

None the less, a fair enough review from what I would view as a more casual player.
Not too critical... pretty fair, more of a neutral viewpoint in some parts. But over all... I think he loves the game!!!

edit: I say "I would view him as a more casual player"... this is where I find out he's a Pirate Legend... lol :)

  • This guy has written several articles about Sea of Thieves of the past months. This one is a bit mixed, but it is not too far from the truth and is for the most part very fair.

I remember most reviews since launch state the game is best played with others. Which can be very true. You get the help, friendship, and opportunity to tell stories together sailing together with others. It does not mean that Sea of Thieves is only played best with others though. It takes a special cut of pirate to play and succeed in Sea of Thieves alone. More so now than when it launched.

I agree that the game is in a much better place content wise a year later. Shrouded Spoils brought a lot polish and made the game what it should have been at launch. Unfortunately a lot of content prior to that was short lived and goes mostly forgotten.

I agree Sea of Thieves will only get better content wise going forward. If the cash shop comes this year, hopefully it will be done right and have a negative impact like in most games these days. The past several updates though has brought lots of old bugs back and added many new ones along with many glitches. All the issues will need to be addressed better than they currently are for the good things that will come our way to truly shine.

  • It's always nice seeing great reviews now. And to think, the game is only getting better as time goes by. Love it.
