Ahoy,
With the upcoming keyboard and mouse support for Xbox (no confirmed date for Sea of Thieves yet), I started thinking about all the discussion we've had about crossplay. I've always been a fan of crossplay, even though I understand the disadvantage a controller has versus a mouse. There's lots of pirates out there that have become very good with their controller, some even a lot better than I am on mouse and keyboard.
Then I started thinking about some of the other discussion that we've had and how it might impact the players if they were to be pushed as an update. Crossplay, kb/m vs controller, pvp vs pve. What if everything was separated, like many of the posts here are trying to accomplish. What would that look like? Well... here's a list:
PC
- PvP with mouse and keyboard
- PvP with controller
- PvE with mouse and keyboard
- PvE with controller
- PvEvP with mouse and keyboard
- PvEvP with controller
Xbox
- PvP with mouse and keyboard
- PvP with controller
- PvE with mouse and keyboard
- PvE with controller
- PvEvP with mouse and keyboard
- PvEvP with controller
Crossplay
- PvP
- PvE
- PvEvP
If the abundance of topics here is to be followed to the letter, we would have at least 15 different types of servers on the Sea of Thieves.
Great, Murk, so what's your point?
Honestly? I think we, as a community, need to stop and think for a moment about what this game is, could be and, more importantly, shouldn't be. Should we stop discussing the problems crossplay brings? No, absolutely not but that doesn't mean the answer to the problem is as straight forward as getting rid of crossplay or separating PvP from PvE.
The charm of this game is that it's a dangerous adventure you take each time you set sail. There's monsters and natural disasters out there and, even worse, other pirates. There are so many fun game mechanics that could be used to enable you to sail by your own in silence across the seas.
When The Hungering Deep was released something really cool happened the first few days: Pirates stopped attacking eachother. Of course it all went to Davy Jones' locker when people got what they needed and started camping the spawn site of Megan, but that's an entirely different topic. It worked for a short while and there's ways to make it work again without taking away what is, arguably, part of the charm of this game.
