Since last update, a large number of issues have come back or cropped up

  • I am sure many remember that not to long ago, the game had a large number of glitches and issues. But, in the Shrouded Spoils update, they fixed a great deal if not the majority of those issues.

Then this latest, very small update, and here we are. Many of those old issues have returned.

    • Return of the misfiring cannon. Now you can fire out of the cannon at odd angles again. Even getting "caught" in your own sail, even when the sail is only half down. This problem is most prevalent if you are actively turning your ship while someone tries to fire out of the cannon.
    • Screen freezes or other lag issues. Seems like the screen freezes or you jump back, to jump forward.
    • The spiderman floating pirate has re-appeared. I named this the spiderman floating pirate because, well, your pirate looks like he/she is posing as spiderman jumping while floating across the deck.
    • Game sounds do not always work. This seems very random, and only effects a couple of sounds at a time. For example, you can't hear the anchor or sounds of the anchor being lifted, but you hear the water. You can't hear the sail when it gets into full wind and billows, but you can hear your footsteps on deck.
    • Islands disappear under various circumstances. Sometimes it is when you are in your rowboat and you drop from your ship, other times it just happens when you are in ship battle near an island.
    • Floating skellies. Exactly what it says. Skellies that float away.
    • Objects in game that are floating. I had floating rocks at devils ridge a couple of days ago. It was kind of cool to be honest, but still, something is not right.
    • Hearing players at an island that are not there. You can hear full on conversations with people that are no where to be found. They simply are not there are anywhere close. But you can hear the full conversation. This latest time I heard it at The Crows Nest fort.
    • Glowing green skeleton pirate returns!!!!
    • Player Names not appearing correctly or in the correct color.
    • Boom barrels in rowboat can explode when docking to the boat.
    • Mermaid does not always return you to your ship. Sometimes you end up in completely random locations.

    NEW ISSUES

    • Enlisting pirate time is random and can be quite extensive. Sometimes taking up to or more than a minute before moving beyond that point.
    • While either poisoned, standing in boiling water or drowning the visual FX are much more dramatic, and you can't open barrel until the FX is gone.
    • If you kill the meg while it is chomping on your ship, the invisible part of the body can block portions of the ship. I imagine this is the hit box. But it makes it so you can't move around. Once we lost our ship because we killed it as it damaged our boat and we could not get below deck to patch or bail because of the invisible barrier. Another time, we couldn't patch, but we were able to get down the stairs to bail water, so we didn't sink that time.
    • In the Athena Fortune, the water sometimes disappears, and as such, you can't reach the ladders if you fall into the valley (that is normally supposed to be filled with water.

    Ongoing issues:

    • Black screens while loading or re-loading. Often times this can take quite a long time and end up costing you a battle or losing your ship.

There are more, I am just running short on time and can't recall them all right now. If you can think of any, please comment below.

I am only making this thread because once again, we are taking 2 steps forward with 1 back. Seems to be a pattern with this game that we add some new cool stuff, but break something else in the process. And right now, the game is not back to its worst as far as the glitches go, but it is not that far off.

  • @nofears-fun My crew saw the return of the “Hey, you’re a glowing green skeleton” bug last session. Good times.

  • @genuine-heather Added that to the list, LOL. Good times.

  • Yes, one has the impression, for updates always a program version is copied as basis, to which it is then developed. Meanwhile the playable program version is patched. When the update is installed, the old, unpatched basic version is installed again.

Either way, quality assurance at Rare #is a mess#.

  • I don't think many of these things went away.

  • @genuine-heather I got the green skelly last night to! Made my sneak attack against a ship very problematic.

Tbh in the end it made me Rage, everything was determined to go wrong yesterday. It felt like I was in Summits personal fanboy server.
I’ve had to put the game down untill they sort it out it’s all but unplayable for me at the moment.

  • The short lag stutters can be annoying when it hits and it's almost certainly a server issue - my crew have always experienced it at the same time.

I've seen the floating rocks on Devil's Ridge too. They looked kinda cool.

Also, had a lot of the Nvidia graphics rendering bug until I found the support page about it suggesting to lower model settings to common... not ideal but seemed to sort it out. That one is particularly annoying when it hits.

I've had various audio bugs, including still hearing some random mic chat in the water. One time the person was playing reggae music constantly. That was very trippy. I was the only one in my crew who could hear it, and I jumped off the ship and swam to the "source" location. Sure enough, there was nothing there.

Starting to think my pirate is drinking spiked grog... Never should've trusted that barmaid.

I understand. I've had a couple sessions like that recently.

  • Ahoy mate! I have not seen all these issues. I have experienced the random conversations being heard while standing in the crow’s nest. Same near islands. No ships or pirates in sight. A couple times the conversations were quite foul. The other issue that I do see frequently is sporadic pausing of everything for 1-4 seconds. The stuttering is the worse of the bugs. I have a high end PC and a connection with extremely low ping. Should not happen.

For the most part Shrouded Spoils brought many great things and fixes. Sadly bugs have popped back up since the last update. There is so much to do now. The only exception is Pirate Legend specific content. Adding way overdue commendations to grind out is not the content was greatly needed. Until there is more in that regards we just sail where the wind takes us.

Overall the game is in a much better place. The are cool things on the horizon. You are right there are still bugs to fix. Hopefully they will be fixed very soon. I would prefer Rare return to a more frequent update schedule even if it was just small incremental updates addressing issues without long wait. The one thing that has been an issue is we have been seeing a lot of new players that are very toxic since it has been unfortunately popularized lately.

  • @solestone563412 That is the exact same spot that I saw them in. Even the snake was there. LOL. Kidding about the snake, but yest, the back of the island, same location, same rocks. It was so surreal. LOL

  • @marsmayflower Most if not all of the issues I mentioned were gone/fixed issues. It was my favorite thing about Shrouded Spoils, all of the quality of life improvements and fixes.

@Goedecke-Michel Agreed, Rare really needs to hire a full time team for quality assurance. Their reliance on volunteer Pioneers, and not giving said volunteers enough time to break down the game and find these issues is appalling. They should only rely on Pioneers for feedback on game play, and if what is being added to the game or changed in the game is fun and adds value to the game. Rare needs to hire full time, employed QoS personnel.

And I agree, I think in the last update, it feels to me, like the person adding the update added it to the older, broken version of the game, rather than adding the changes to the newer, corrected version.

Edit: I would also add that I am sure Rare are aware of many of these issues, yet they won't fix them until the next update of the game. I also find this appalling. If you know of a problem, and have a fix, then fix it. I don't think anyone will mind a weekly update that fixes ongoing bugs in the game.

    This. So much this.

  • @nofears-fun we also of course have the issue of the "enlisitng Pirate" that can take a fair few minutes whereas it used to be instantaneous (when you skip the map cutscene).

Could be worth adding in the playername bug that either sets the playername to white and a default name (seen twice last week), or when we get the red Pirate Captain name stuck to our own.

  • I think part of the problem is they actually rushed the update to end the campaign for Shrouded Spoils. More regular updates is not the issue, in my opinion, it's the opposite.

We had similar bugs creeping in regularly after launch when Rare were updating the game every week pretty much because the updates weren't properly tested in advance. They changed the frequency around the summer time to a slower update schedule so they could test each patch before sending it out.

I don't know what went wrong with it this time, perhaps something as simple as being understaffed over the holidays.

In any case, I think they probably should have extended the Shrouded Spoils by a couple of weeks and done some more work on the update to end it.

  • While loading loot from a completed skull fort...

Friend: "No, don't dock the rowboat to the ship!"
Me: "Why? What are you worried about?"
Friend: "The gunpowder barrels will explode!"
Me: "Oh, that? They fixed that bug a few weeks ago. It's in the patch notes."
    Friend: "Really?"
Me: "Yeah, go ahead and look it up."
Friend: "Oh, well okay. You go ahead and do it then."
Me: "Really? You're still scared of something that won't happen anymore? Fine... Here, let me show you. See! There's nothing to wor..."

    BOOOOOOOOOOM!

And yes, this coversation actually happened.
Rare, you're sailing against the wind here...

  • A lot of these issues are due to how they are handling network traffic.

Stuttering and rubberbanding is due to a desync between where your client has you located and where the server has you located; if you get too far out of sync, the server will send your client a message telling you where you should be and you get jerked to that position. If the connection is really bad or the server is under high load, it will happen a lot.

Incorrect animations (like the floating pirate and the crew-as-a-skeleton) are due to your client not receiving (or losing) the packets that update another character's look or current animation.

I'm not sure what is causing the floating rocks, but it seems like the client is in charge of rendering the islands and doing the collision detection which is why when the islands fail to render you can swim right through them or in some cases get squeezed between geometry and fall through the island floor. The floating rocks, like the playdoh islands, are a rendering bug of some kind, but it indicates that the server isn't that authoritative on your position.

There is also the ping hiccup that occurs when another crew gets within a certain range. Ping will usually spike as the server is trying to send you all the data about the other crew's cosmetic gear. A lot of the bugs and "hacks" that get reported are usually due to lag or the client-side hitmarker setup giving incorrect user feedback. I would not recommend trying to play this game over a wireless connection.

There are a lot of network issues that need to be worked on before the Arena comes I think; increasing the number of players in close proximity is going to make this worse.

  • Anyone still experiencing the issue when taking a mermaid, instead of returning to your boat, you end up in a completely random location? This weekend, I was off the boat, and my mate had to make a hasty retreat from the volcano that started erupting. The boat was hit, knocking the driver off the boat. We both took a mermaid which should have given us enough time to patch the boat and save the loot. Instead, his mermaid took him to mermaids hideaway, and my mermaid put me in the row boat on the back of the galleon that was the other half of our alliance. Needless to say, our little tank of a sloop was done for after that.

  • @solestone563412 I doubt it, I am still waiting for an in game bonerscope t-shirt. - surprised Duke didn't sell this, the bug was hilarious. I would have paid doubloons for one

I can confirm I had the hearing another crew that is not there bug.

I was on Ancient Spire and I could hear them talking quite clearly but they could not hear me. Through headphones I could also hear them move behind me as I passed through them.

Oh yeah, well used to that tell... it's a great alarm bell sometimes

Ghosts of dead pirates with unfinished business are haunting Ancient Spire!

That's close to Devil's Ridge, so maybe the floating stones are linked to it!

Seriously though, that bug is scary when you are solo slooping, it's night time, you have headphones on, and suddenly you hear random voices really close to you

  • @Sshteeve Thanks mate, I forgot those, and added them to the list.
@Galactic-Geek I have not experienced that, but then again, I don't normally dock a rowboat with GPB on board. Added it to the list anyways.
@D3ADST1CK Yeah, I am sure there are a plethora of things going on to cause these issues. But the main point was to make a list of problems, most of which were fixed, and have now returned. Just gets frustrating knowing that these issues are out there.
@OGDirtyApe I have never experienced that, but added to list.
@RealStyli I agree, but also disagree. I agree they need to do more testing and as I said, paid staff for Quality Assurance is desperately needed. Full time people that run the game through its paces. Find and fix the problems before giving it to us. But I disagree that if there is a problem, or a rash of problems like there are now, then Rare should not wait for some update to fix them. We had problems for up to 2 months where the game was barely playable and got no fixes, because Rare stated they wanted to wait for the next update to include the patches in. In my opinion that is unacceptable. If you know the problem and have the fix for it, and it affects the game that much, then issue the fix ASAP. Don't delay. Delaying only increases the amount of frustration people have.

There are no way too many of his fanboys running around lately. Some are very cult like followers just like we have seen in the forums. Definitely can sour anyone’s voyages. Good news is we have been teaching them what it is like to swim with the sharks without a ship.

True pirates rule the Sea of Thieves, not posers. Never say die!

Ideally, yes. But the issue is that in deploying a fix for one problem the patch could create multiple other new issues and it could create problems trying to fix the other known problems later.

  • @realstyli My assumption in saying release the fix ASAP is that you found the problem, fixed it, and fully tested it. Again, having a full time team dedicated to Quality Assurance would help in this.

  • Another new one is when you are in a shipwreck and slowly dying you can't access any of the barrels to actually grab a banana to save yourself. Same thing with fighting skellie ships equipped with the venom ball the screen goes completely purple and red and you have no field of vision. You are also locked out of barrels on your ship at this time. The red venom effect is also back if you die from a venom ball or snake spit once you hit the ferry the screen outer edges are red.

  • Sea of Bugs! Yay! 🤕

  • @iceman-0007 Forgot that one, I changed the original post to add new problems that have come up in last update and added this to the list.

I also moved the enlisting pirate over to new problems since that is a most recent issue.

  • @iceman-0007 said in Since last update, a large number of issues have come back:

I would call this an "unintended side effect". I'm sure the intent was to fix the issue with getting hit while on a cannon with the ammo wheel open, which would cause the wheel to get stuck on the screen and leave you unable to do anything.

The "fix" was to close every dialog if you take damage to prevent one from getting stuck. Unfortunately there are a lot of instances where you need to be able to access dialogs while taking damage, like when you need to grab a banana to heal from poison or when you need to fix a hole in your ship that is filling with boiling water and you have no planks in inventory.

  • @d3adst1ck agree with you there but its hilarious and frustrating to sit there and be grasping for that magical banana to save your life only to see p00f! up in green smoke cause you were so close..lol

  • @x-crowheart-x I’m glad someone has been aha because I feel like I have no thumbs when I’m playing at the moment.

It’s obviously not true that everyone is and I’m over generalising completely here but it’s just how it’s felt aha.

But I introduced two of my friends to the game a couple of days ago and litrally every ship we have got into an engagement with has just been typing abuse in chat and one shotting is (It’s my guess macros) but because of all the double gunning and summit videos it’s just kind of ruined the game vibe.
And they have both just said there’s no point in playing the game when players can just look at you and you drop dead.

I’ve tried to defend the game to them saying it’s not normally like this and it’s usually a very Rare Occurrence but after the third day of playing and it litrally happening with every ship we encounter I haven’t been able to give them a session where they feel like they have had a chance and they have quit playing.

Even I’ve just had to put the game down aswell because there honestly just doesn’t seem to be any point untill the concerns are addressed. And Rare doesn’t seem interested in providing a fair or balanced experience for there console players so what can ya do.

I don’t know what I can do, I’ve been playing the game since TA, I’m pretty competent with a controller. I mean I’m not a god but I was a consistent low masters on OW which is basically in the top 15% of players.

It’s just meh. Oh well I’ll stop ranting at you now ahaha

  • @knifelife

You are cool mate! Sometimes you need someone to talk to and that is why all of us are here. I know that the double gun/macro issue is on Rare’s radar. It is not a game bug like @NoFears-Fun started this post about. Just hope a resolution for it does not take long with these bug fixes because of the long gaps in updates now.

The players using this method are the bugs in this case. A bunch of annoying foul mouthed little gnats sailing around wanting to ruin the fun for everyone else. Following the hive mind commands to be bad players. The rest of us just need to keep swatting at them with cannonballs.

Once many of them cannot use a single gimmick technique to inflate themselves, they will return to dry land to crawl under a rock. That is until they unfortunately see the next video to rally the toxic troll brigade.

  • Play music on the ferry when enter the portal and sometimes the music keeps playing on the ferry the rest of the session :D

  • Great list, Fears! Here’s another glitch I had last night, the water in the legendary hangout was missing!

I accidentally fell off the dock down there, normally nbd, but this time I landed with a hard thud on the ground??? I could see the graphics of water way above my head, but there was no water to swim through or drown me, and I had to run around trying to find the one ladder I could jump to & reach from the ground down there. 🤔🤔🤔

  • Please for the love of everything holy fix the black screen issue, its horrible and can be the determining factor in a win or loss farrrr to much.

  • @queenpucci That actually sounds hysterical aha! Did you manage to get a clip? :P
