Could SoT be top 5?

  • ‪Polygons games of 2018 so far. RDR2 at number 6. Spicey. I wonder what top 5 is..... (hoping for a top 5 for Sea of Thieves) ‬

  • @xraylexx It could be #1, Polygon has written some really positive stuff about the game.

  • Very unlikely.
Love SoT, but it doesn't compete against some of the games we had this year.

  • There is only one writer at polygon covering the game, and they've written some weirdly biased articles about it. If I remember correctly, one of them was the "losing players is the best thing to happen to the game" article that came out when it was being reported that nearly 50% of the people who had tried the game after launch had quit.

  • SoT is Top Three i think!

  • @d3adst1ck This truth hurts...
But hey I see people coming back a bit now :)

  • Polygon isn't exactly your gold standard on journalism ethics. I would be surprised if SoT even makes the list.

It's the best game of the year. Honestly this in my opinion is the best game that has been made to date.

  • @irhcsajr You're not objective unfortunately.

You have to take everything into consideration: Graphics, Story, Gameplay, Voice acting, production, sales, PR, buisness model, innovation etc...

Look what the latest technologies have been able to bring in, both in multiplayer and solo games. Just look at how detailed RDR2 is, how beautiful both the story line and graphics are. God of War is insane too and that's just a few examples.

SoT didn't win a single prize at the official Video Games Awards and while i do love what Rare achieved (most of it at least) I strongly believe that there is a reason for them not winning a single award: The bar is just raised too high on so many levels.

  • Not all reviews and jurys are paid. Some games are a work of art and they succeed in delivering the best in their category. That's what makes them number 1.

Graphically Red Dead is far superior and is way better looking on every aspect: lightning, render distance, texture quality, shaders, map scale, physic grids, character animation, environment, biome diversity etc...

The bar is way too high. Both technically and artistically and trust me I would love to support SoT on this one but facts are facts. No need to be overprotective about it, I think that SoT has a few qualities that Red Dead don't have.

You can have an opinion on this though.

Sorry mate you can’t compare an Game with „Real-Life“-Graphics to an most „Comic“-Graphics Game! And you are forgetting one thing: Replay Value! Yes RDR2 has it but Noway GoW or Spiderman that’s ridiculous! You can play SoT in 2 years with new Content and nobody is playing God of War 2018 anymore in 2 years because God of War 5 is out ;)

  • @KING-DEKA The topic is about Polygon's Top 5 games of 2018. Replayability is off topic here. It's just about the current year.

You also misread what I wrote: I said that the most successfull games are the ones that deliver the best in their category. So all of these Game Awards Stuff always judge games according to what they achieved respectively.

Also, I just pointed out what makes a game graphically superior to another one. The comparison isn't really coming from me since I don't believe that's how games are being compared one to another when they're nominated in the same category.

@mr-dragon-raaar It's not dressed up. I gave you facts. If you don't know how video game developpement works, how game engine works and how you come from a basic alpha to a finished product then please stay off the topic. Might sound pedant but you seem to lack of this therefore relying on your sole consumer/player opinion on the matter.

you have have only stated your biased opinion about a game which you clearly like.

I don't own a Ps3 and I tested Red Dead at a friends place. I also watched portions of the solo campaign through occasional streams.

no offence but if you believe that studios do not have an active role in making sure that they top these polls/awards that is just being naive.

    50% true, 25% speculation, 25% conspiration.
I am aware of this. But don't make it a generality. Red Dead doesn't need that. The sales/popularity are off the roof. It doesn't need these kinds of articles/exposure to sold out.

  • RDR2 is irrelevant to the discussion of who is going to win this specific list, as it's already been ranked number 6

  • Im owning RDR2 but the Singleplayer/Story Mode is really really boring my wife played it through all 8 Chapters! I don’t wanted it to play, I CANT play scripted Games! I bought it only for the Online Mode, but honestly don’t tried it yet, my precious Playtime is reserved for Sea of Thieves :)

  • @mr-dragon-raaar I love how you literally had 0 arguments, kept saying the same thing over and over again without even understanding my point and still act like you were relevant to the subject.

    Nice scuttle anyway.

  • I’ve played RDR2 and SoT and SoT is the better game. It’s just more fun. And the controls on RDR2 are just so clunky. You sort of slosh about not doing what you want. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve aimlessly wandered around the back of my hours trying to put something in the horse cargo and accidentally punched it.

RDR2 has the most complicated controls I’ve ever seen in an Video Game that’s right!

  • We've still got :

    • Smash Bros Ultimate
    • Octopath Traveler
    • Dragonquest 11
    • God of War
    • Subnautica
    • Dragonball Figherz
    • Monster hunter World
    • Ni-No-Kuni 2
    • Shadow of the tombraider
    • Xenoblade chronicles 2: torna
    • Battlefield V
    • Celeste
    • The Messenger
    • Gris

    and a whole lot more.

I love Sea of Thieves but I fear the competition is just so vast Chanses of it being in the top 5 is really low. :-(

  • enjoyed the rdr2 story so good, even the map design, the controls are not good but its the easiest rockstar game of all time its casual.rdr 2 online is a joke rs games has so many studios and the world in the multiplayer is empty.their first focus was on microtransactions, for what i should spend money in an empty game.the best online game this year of course sot

@dotcomrobots and you can have yours.

please don't dress that up as any kind of fact. it comes across as overprotective :)

thankfully even if what you said was true a game should be about fun which RDR2 is severely lacking in (in my opinion).

Not to seem antagonistic (I truly don't mean it), but if his/her opinion is biased with RDR2, isn't your opinion with SoT biased as well by your standards? Besides, aren't we all technically biased? What's being neutral? You like what you like and no one can help that, not even the news or gaming articles. The idea that they're "neutral" is an illusion, none of them are. I don't think I'd enjoy reading a well-written and well-argued article any less because of that.

Let's not get into an argument about which game is better. Comparing SoT and RDR2 is like comparing apples and oranges, but to say RDR2 was lacking is a little extreme too. The game was arguably much more complete at release than SoT was. Hell, I would even say it deserves game of the year with its stunning graphics, heartfelt characters, fun missions, AND in spite of its annoying extended travel times by horse across the map. Don't judge me because of that, I love this game, but I can surely love that one as well, it's certainly not exclusive.

  • It could indeed be on the top 5 list for sure.
The game have already won 1 award.

  • R2d2 was a lot of fun at 1st but by about chapter 3 you start to feel like the same shoot outs happen over and over with non stop cut scenes. It would be a decent movie and has a lot of crazy scripted moments.

I like SOT because its not like anything else out right now. It came out same week as Farcry 5 and I still play this game every chance I get.

To each there own though, I still need to finish RDR2, Spiderman, I blame SOT for not finishing them. Next game I am pumped for is crackdown. SOT I don't think will get shelved for some time though. Its my game of the year

  • @weedstar-deluxe a dit dans Could SoT be top 5? :

You weren't here when SoT launched right?
In terms of emptiness on day 1 for a Video Game, SoT is hard to beat ^^

I think RDR2 is in beta when it comes to the online part, meaning not fully released.
    Test environment =/= Public release.

  • Top 4? :)

  • @solestone563412 sagte in Could SoT be top 5?:

No. SoT is a very fine niche game for a small audience. It's currently #39 on the Xbox most played games list right now one spot above WWE 2K19. Nuff said.

The Game is an success and the Playerbase isn’t an small audience, it’s rank #4 Gamepass Game, that isn’t bad!

  • I'd be surprised if SoT made it to top5. That said, Sea of Thieves & Red Dead Redemption 2 are two of my favorite games this year. Can't really compare them as they're so different gaming experiences but both are fantastic.

Then again, after finishing RDR2 story I'm probably done with the game as I don't care about online. SoT I've played for hundreds of hours and will be playing it for months or even years to come.

  • @solestone563412 sagte in Could SoT be top 5?:

@king-deka Small is a relative term. But when I start running into the same people playing in Random Crews once or twice a month then "small" is the term I would use. SoT is a town, not a city, and not a village (yet). It's small but not tiny.

There's nothing wrong being a very fine, small game. But that's what SoT is. Its #39 on the Microsoft Store most played and doesn't crack the top 20 UU's from a neutral source like MajorNelson.com.

It's a great game with some flaws and bad press from a shaky release. SoT is too different to be mainstream. It's a hard sell. But I'm sure it will have a small, dedicated player base for some time. There's not much like it on the market. So it fills it's niche nicely. But it ain't making the Polygon top 10!

When Arena is dropping there will be Millions new players and returning players trust me :)

  • @solestone563412 sagte in Could SoT be top 5?:

@king-deka I hope so. It's definitely more of a mainstream concept (A team Combat Game) that the general public will feel comfortable with. Maybe Arena will work as the "Ice Breaker" to let more people discover the game as a whole?

Yeah I think so because PvP Games are always more popular than others! I’m looking at Twitch the highest viewed Streams are in PvP Only Games like Fortnite, Dota2, Pubg etc.
And I’m thinking Streamers like Summit helping Rare and SoT to draw in more and more players!

  • @solestone563412 Sales generally have no bearing on best of art critique awards like the oscars, etc. And I have to imagine Polygon sees themselves as operating in that manner, especially seeing as everything they've wrote about the top games so far has been about game design and the experience of playing the game.

Besides The Tetris Effect just got #4, SoT definitely sold more then that, possibly more then Celeste and Into The Breach as well.

Also the new Assassin's creed and black ops 4. Although I doubt either are contenders. BO4 makes me want to stick daggers in my eyes.

  • Gotta be top 3 now :)

  • This list is so weird, ive never even heard of the last two. But 1 and 2 are gonna be GoW and Obra Dinn.

  • My hopes are fading :)

  • My hopes are gone....

  • Before it’s going under here, Sea of Thieves is #16 in the Polygons Best Games 2018 list, that’s very good :)
