External HDD vs SSD on Xbox One X

    I’ve been considering getting an SSD for my Xbox One X for a while now - I’ve read loads of conflicting advice on whether it would make a significant difference to loading times. Obviously, I know that SSD should be faster but have read plenty of comments that the Xbox One X is so ‘well tuned’ that it doesn’t make much difference.

    Well, I got an SSD today and moved Sea of Thieves straight onto it. Now, instead of waiting an average of 192 seconds from Dashboard to Ship I only wait 99 seconds which, for me, is a massive improvement (I have to leave a lot of Open Crews that seem completely beyond hope!).

    Loading times are clearly a first world problem but thought my experience might help somebody else considering an SSD - my advice is don’t hesitate particularly if you can get one on offer like I did!

    @mancfoo Yeah, from what I have read it's hard to beat an external SSD. Did you find a good deal on one?

    @ionei-falcon SSD's are going to drop to 8c/GB (nand flash oversupply + higher capacities) next year so that will be more reason for people on the console version to invest in one to move the most played games to that suffer from the longer than normal loading times.

    Here is to hoping that the next generation of consoles start putting in SSD's to the main storage from the get go as an option for those that want to play on that platform.

    @ionei-falcon I bought a Seagate 1TB drive - it was 30% off on Amazon so £199. Deals also on the 500GB and 250GB options. Significantly cheaper than the Xbox branded version that Seagate have just released and, from what I could tell, it’s exactly the same - just marketed differently for PC and Mac.

    Hmm, I always heard the difference was negligible for the X1X but cutting the load time into game by half? That's a game changer. Thanks for letting us know.

    I have a Samsung T5 and everything loads MUCH faster than the stock internal on my X. I load into the tavern in around 20 seconds with the latest patch. respawning from a mermaid and the ferry is usually instant.

    Get yourself an Xbox One X and a high quality SSD! I am currently loading into games in less than 40 seconds.
