There we were sailing around the devils roar doing a gold hoarders mission to just get some gold while we waited for the 3 Other ships in our alliance to finish their athenas. As i step foot on flintlock it begins to rumble and I stumble around. I find the area that I need to dig for my chest and clink their it is...a marauders. I continue to dig with each dig I hear a new clinkclinkclink. I finish digging out my chest move it and set it to the side and continue to dig in the spot I was digging before. A chest starts to appear. I thought it was at 1st a castaways but no lo and behold I start digging up an athena chest!! I scurry back to my ship with the chest and run straight to morrow's outpost to sell it and get the full price and rep for it. it's the 2nd to last Athena chest needed for me to be pirate legend 10. Come to find out it was one of our alliance members chest and we sold it. I guess pirates will be pirates I the end.

If you have a chest to dig at the same location as someone else on the server you can dig up theirs as well. I've never heard this happen to an Athena chest though. Was the crew on that chapter of the voyage? It would be a bug if the chest was gone before they even got the map. I assume the location is generated when the X map is created and not predetermined.
If they didn't even get a map because the chest was already dug up by you I would consider submitting a bug report as I don't think that is how they'd want that to work.

I had a similar scenario in Devils Roar as a solo. While looking for a treasure from a map, I found the desired location and dug out 4 chest from one location. Unfortunatley no Athena's for me.
