Ship names?

Will probably be a random ship name generator like the pirate generator.
It is meant to be in their long term plans, from the interviews I have seen, however in what form really is guessing..
.. however, my money is on the generator... rather than pre-approved.
Don't expect it anytime soon.

Honestly, this is the type of aesthetic you'd expect to be available from launch day.

The Devs have commented on this and Nate and Mike have stated that they plan to add this feature eventually.

They are saying that they still need to decide how it would be implemented, ship ownership, etc. For example, would the host get to name the ship? Would it be tied to your character? Would anyone be able to change it if they are in your crew? ...

I say that whoever is the host, should name the ship. It should be tied to the character and only the captain can change the name of the ship. Usually a crew who sails together consistently would have agreed on a name by now anyway.

Perhaps, but what happens to the ship name when the host leaves? Does it stay until the new hosts changes it?

On one hand, the host leaves, the name is removed and the new host or "captain" can rename the ship (even the same name if they want).

On the other, the host leaves and the name remains and the new host can still have the option to rename the ship if they want.

Either option is a viable one for Rare to implement.

The real question is, how much would naming/re-naming a ship cost. Depending on how Rare implements the ship naming. The first name could be free and every time a person hosts, the ship keeps that name. If they want to re-name the ship, it would be a small fee, like 5,000 (which most players can accrue pretty quickly). Or ship naming could be free all the time. The host can just go to the shipwright and access the name plate and add the ship's name to it. Then at any time, the host can rename the ship.
