Should the edge of the map be more "flat earther" oriented to coincide with the beliefs during pirate times instead of just going red and sinking you?

  • Back in the day of pirates the world was largely viewed as being flat with an edge in all directions that essentially waterfalls out into space. I think it would be quite neat if the edge of the map was actually this way, it feeds deeper into the lore of the sea and time period and would make quite an amazing sight to see especially for pursuits taking place just along the edge.

  • @nyadc85 No, it was not thought to be flat in "piratey" times. Even the Ancient Greeks knew the world was round.

  • Most of the world has understood the world is a sphere for a long time. Eratosthenes even did a pretty good job over 2,000 years ago measuring the curvature.

  • One major issue there, the Sea of Thieves isn't the only area of the world. When you start off you can see that to get to the Sea, you sailed through cursed waters via the only safe channel to the north west. If you cross reference the name of the island shown in the lower left of that map, that with that being accounted for, the Sea of Thieves is within the Bermuda Triangle. So no, a flat earth design would not fit into the lore of the game. Additionally, even Captain Flameheart's story states that the Sea of Thieves is surrounded by cursed waters with one passage in and out.

This is not true, not entirely. Also trying to form a philosophical debate in spite of the entertainment and fantasy aspect of a video game is hilarious. What is fun? What are entertaining mechanics to flesh out a video game based upon ancient lore?

    Jesus...

Most scholars knew the world to be spherical however it was popular and majority belief amongst the general populous that the world was indeed flat, this was at its apex during the middle ages which was at the forefront and beginning of piracy in southern seas... So yeah... The irony in trying to conflate ignorance with actual ignorance, thank you for that.

I swear this forum is like anti-fun armchair scholar central.. Why introduce fun aspects in a video game? Oh it's not entirely accurate and realistic? BLASPHEMY! What a load of nonsense. This is why people are turning away from this place in large numbers, none of you are interested in a fun video game, you want to hold contrarian debates for the sake of simply arguing and shooting down ideas.

You want content in this content-less game yet allow almost no ability for ideas surrounding content to be formed.

  • The ancient Greeks figured out that Earth is a sphere using a pillar, a well, the summer solstace, and geometry. People didn’t believe the world was flat in pirate times. In fact, Christopher Colombus embarked on his journey operating under the fact that Earth is round, reasoning he could use that attribute to find a short path to India and China by sea (North and South America getting in the way notwithstanding).

    Couple problems with this.

One; as others mentioned, the world wasn't thought to be flat back then. While some uneducated people might have thought so, I would think sailors would be more likely to have that fact down, given the importance it has to their livelihood.

Second; the lore for SoT has already established it as an area that exists in our world that is inaccessible at most times. Since our world is round, so must the ingame one be.

No argument that it would be a killer visual, but I think the ship has sailed for that idea.

    @blam320

Interesting fact; Columbus believed the world was pear-shaped.

  • @nyadc85 Historical facts aside, it would be amazing and fun to see, but like @V**a-Hombre mentioned, the world of Sea of Thieves is a fantasy setting, but very much set on Earth, so adding a Flat Earth would actually go against the established lore, not add to it.

There's also several gameplay, and technical aspects to consider. Awesome as it could have been, I don't think it's meant to be in Sea of Thieves.

  • That is entirely false, others have already explained.

  • SoT doesn't encompass the entirety of the earth anyway

  • If you sail to the very edge of the map your ship resets like a scuttle so I guess it’s already like that
