Thieves Haven... for reals

  • from like 11am to 1pm, 4pm to 6pm, and 9pm to 11pm
    They should make Thieves haven an actual haven/hub. When you arrive your canons/weapons no longer work. Players can meet, join crews, or voyages from there.... and maybe take part in a mini game on the island crew vs crew. I think it would be grand. Put a new vendor there for Player challenges

  • @mmountain the safe zone will never happen. i could see a pvp server before that honestly and even that probably will never happen

  • Jeez...it's not a safe zone, it's a hub to encourage community interaction. Which is what this game does need to help ships team up or just have fun. And the OP isn't suggesting a permanent hub either, just during certain times of the day.

    I for one would love a place to pull up to, sit down and have a mug of grog with other pirates and share tales of our adventures without the concern of being killed...just for fun. No buying supplies or selling of treasures, just a place to sit and chill and drink.

    Why are so many against such an idea? It wouldn't take anything away from the game but would add an extra dimension? Destiny has the Tower, COD has HQ, Online MMOs have taverns, HQs, etc....do any of those take away from what the core of those games are? COD is pure PVP yet having that hub before diving into the core game doesn't hurt the core game. Having one area in Sea of Thieves would not "break the game" or "take away from its spirit" or whatever the "designers intended". The designers want to encourage social interaction, well one neutral hub that doesn't allow anything other than chatting, a few mini games, or just a camp fire to sit around the beach and play music wouldn't hurt a single thing.

    Again, how does having that at one area, even temporary hurt anything other than preventing you from killing someone who, at that particular moment is merely trying to interact with other crews?

    If you want to steal their stuff, don't go near the hub island. Wait for them on the open sea like you have to do for 90% of the game anyway.

    Realistically, how much time do you think you spend in the game not close enough to anyone to actually take their stuff anyway? Being at a hub would be no different than sailing across the sea with nothing in your hold while looking for someone.

  • @kiethblacklion I agree with you. It would be nice to be able to sit down and have grog, play some music, or dice and just relax with other people without fear of getting blunderbuss'd in the a**e. Everyone is obsessed with labels, so calling it a "safe-zone" people come out of the shadows to troll.
    I think the best way to even out a system like this to avoid the idea of a safe-zone is to follow what other MMOs do. NPC enforcers with such high HP and stats they are virtually impossible to kill, but they will enforce the no violence rule in places like the tavern, or some other type of haven or meeting spot.

  • Counterintuitively, Having a safe haven area increases pvp encounters and the whole pirate mentality.

    It opens up the possibility of

    Backstabbing: 2 crews get together to do xyz activity, as soon as they leave the safe area BOOM BACKSTAB IN THE FACE, or if the pirates are smart as soon as they find the treasure BOOM! BACKSTAB IN THE FACE!

    Theft: the only condition in this safe haven is that you can't sink a ship or kill the crew, no one said anything about stealing the treasure in boats.

    Stalking: follow ships leaving the safe haven wait till they get the booty, steal and sink.

    the way I see it, if you are against a safe haven, you are the carebear that is afraid of more pvp.

  • I love fighting. I just think it could be more of a hub that locks your crewsite together for a bigger voyage. Once all is sold the game could go dark and load you up as if your ship sank elsewhere. And I realize the danger in it remaining an open world outside. Stalking would be a problem Unless by going there for a group voyage loads you out of that server by visiting the vendor or something...

  • I don't know if this was mentioned as i skipped a few comments, but if any one has followed the Sea of thieves comic they have introduced a pistol that stops all pistols from being fired.

    I think it would be cool if they brought that in game as a trophy hung up in a tavern at Thieves or something like that. Players would still be able to get into sword fights but guns and cannons wouldn't work, so it might make players think twice about attacking people at the hub/tavern.

    Its like a safe zone but also not...

  • Literally it's tortuga. They'd just have to make it so that you'd have safe passage somehow once outside. It's basically far cry 5s arcade. A hub you can find in the open world that launched multilayer coop. Only you sail there and it's becomes a safe zone during peak hours

    LOL. okay but if thats the case you should still be able to fight each other, and punch/brawl, drink..

  • The only way a zone like that would work is not having any way to turn in loot of any kind. Maybe have it so you are attacked on site for having stolen goods on-board? So the only way to get in unharmed is to roll in empty?

  • And I can imagine the brawl that starts when a giant horn blows letting everyone know playtime is over and it's a free for all again.

    I think it would have to be an entirely new island though, because thieves haven is just too sweet to not do quests there anymore.

    If someone wanted to just wait outside the area to get the drop on me as I'm leaving, I welcome that too. I say bring it on. When I'm in the mood for a fight, sometimes it's hard to find another ship willing to brawl. If they come to me, even better.

    Yah. The day they put in 'safe' zones is the day I uninstall. The microtransactions also make me nervous. They need to focus on things to do rather than things to buy.

  • I don’t think there should ever be a place you can retreat to and be safe from other pirate encounters in the game. I love the idea that there’s always the chance of danger right around the next rock or island and you can either run or fight it out, but you can’t go park in the safe circle to get away.

    exactly, this is a social hub, no missions, no voyages, you can't pick up voyages or claim treasures. the sole purpose of this is the social aspect.

    I think u misread my post, i was just saying the OP meant a literal 2 hours, i do not want safe zones, i am completely against them, i was just clarifying a time difference. Thats why i put in capslock “NO SAFE ZONES!”

  • There's already two safe zones in the game, "the ferry of the damned" and "the pirate legend hideout". The only way a safe zone hub world would work, is if you were transported there like the two examples.

  • Aye, this has been discussed before, Thieve's Haven in particular. It won't be possible(or to test) until sever population is increased. The problem would be that everyone one is at the island as opposed to sailing about, diminishing Rare's, "enriched" journies goal. I'm not opposed to the idea(I AM opposed to safe-zones), just letting you know why it can't happen just yet. In even other private messaging/forums it had been discussed about adding more cannon defenses on Thieve's Haven to replace the idea of a safe-zone. I'm cutting close to NDA though I'm not bound by it, so I won't comment on these statements any further. Just a heads up folks! It would be a great idea!

  • @rockinpodunk Kool but you realize all this would do is become a feeding frenzy spot for all of us that like pvp,, yould be getting circled by ships that for some reason stop fighting each other and start waiting for yall to leave, we wouldn't even care about loot it would be more like let's get these w*****s when they leave just for the heck of it
