A little something for the ladies....

    @genuine-heather

I do love the implication that something like, for example, a corset is oversexualising, when it is essentially a belt, with breast support.
Given its original purpose and not the reasons people seem to think it was worn; it was literally just a way to alter a person's figure so as to look more flattering in a dress. Like a belt is pretty frequently used to tighten up a man's gut to make him appear vaguely more flattering.

(Granted, it's not the original purpose of a belt, but I think it speaks to the void we have between items of clothing for males and those for females. E.G. A woman in a corset is sexual, but a completely shirtless man is just fine.)

Thank you. I couldn't agree more.

  • @pink-geek-chic

I would very much welcome some more and longer hairstyles, jewellery and some different styles of clothing.

Female attire all round just needs a little more love I think. One thing that irritates me at the moment is when you sit, while wearing a dress, your hands clip through the fabric for instance. Hairstyles designed specifically for while wearing a hat would also be something I'd love to see.

  • While I think you ladies are on to something, I also think that RARE are keeping it with the 18th Century Pirate. For example, out of the most notorious female pirates: Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and Grace O'Malley they dressed like men. They wanted to be seen as equals and not as sex symbols. Even Grace shaved her head and cut her hair short. Many times female pirates were orphaned or runaway women who were looking to fit in...not stand out.

With that said, this game needs many more cosmetics and customizability, not just for the ladies. Tattoos were a good start, but how about 50 different jacket types, 100 different belts, 1000 shoes, etc. not just for the lady, but for all pirates.

  • I’d also like to change the colour of my pirates lips. Black lipstick is so last year :D

  • @nightmare247365 I think for 18th century - well, women all through history who wanted to go to sea, it was more a case of not being discovered rather than being seen as equals. While aboard ship they were already capable of managing the same tasks as the men were and being discovered and being the only female on board with a male crew wasn't going to end well. As well as the superstition that females aboard ship was viewed as bad luck.. probably for that reason...

  • Definitely agreed, wifey would love some more pants/boot options to go with the dresses as well. And jewelry could benefit both genders.

  • @pink-geek-chic It would be nice to see more customization that can go well with female characters.

  • I agree. They do however have many of the dresses that look much better than the jackets, but i still agree they need more hairstyles. They will be adding hair color changes too so that will be good.

  • Just mentioning on the historical...women were often thrown overboard if found out...it was one of the origins of a the mermaid myth.. and mermaids luring sailors to their doom of drowning...revenge for their previous fate at the hands of the sailors seafaring bethren...

  • @genuine-heather said in A little something for the ladies....:

Um, no. That’s absurd. Most women are physically incapable of growing a beard. But anybody can put on a dress.

Which I proudly do in game pretending I'm the ships cleric.

I'm fine with having dedicated cosmetics for female characters.

Sidenote: Pirating in a dress is rather impractical, though.

    @rattlyfob yes!

Granted... my interest in this is to perfect my pirate kilt look... buuuut hey i think it benefits everyone

I've been saying kilts should be an option for almost 2 years... I'd be rocking one (and little else).

Been trying to figure out how to make it look like my avatar is wearing one out of the (lacking) choices we have right now.

  • It really bugs me that he doesnt want it because the only option in his mind would be the scantily clad bikini. And for real does he really think a corset is just a lewd piece of clothing. All thats being asked for is hair and make up, jewelry, and some better looking dresses.

  • I've thought of this too! Female need alot more cosmetic options. Hairstyles, make-up, actually dresses you want to wear, earrings, etc etc... Just more feminine cosmetic options in short. And these can be applied to the male characters too of course!

  • @katttruewalker Agreed! Another fault with the dresses is that they don't "hang" correctly on the avatar. It looks like they are all made of cardboard...they stick out away from the legs at the bottom. They just look awkward and cumbersom. Reminds me of playing with paper dolls when I was a child!

  • @xdilligafx1974 I think skirts in general would give so many more options. You can mix and match pants, shirts, and jackets from different clothing sets....but with dresses you don't even have the option of choosing a jacket.

My character is always in "male" clothes, i.e. pants, shirt and jacket. That doesn't mean I don't want more feminine choices, and not necessarily dresses. Like I said, where are the ruffled shirts? Skirts would be awesome for mixing/matching. Corsets seem conspicuously missing, although I noticed a couple dresses appear to have them built-in. Then there are hair styles, jewelry, makeup, etc. None of these need be "women-only" at all. But the girls definitely need some love here. Even the initial choice of avatars is pretty sad. I had to "settle" on one after spending almost two hours in the character generator. All the more reason I would love to be able to make some changes.

  • @genuine-heather yes! I mentioned this on launch...that when choosing a pirate initially, the incident of female avatars was lower than male avatars.

  • Females definitely need more options. Makeup, hair, jewelry, and clothes. And as far as clothes go, they definitely need more style choices. My best friend plays with me a lot and I constantly hear her moan about how all the dresses are bulky and look like garbage bags.

And as far as "over sexualizing" female characters, that's something you do yourself. If I have to listen to her complain about not having access to a corset and high heels for her character one more time I'm going to pull my hair out. I don't think anyone here is advocating for armored bikinis like you see in many fantasy RPGs, but "sexier" clothing is something I know plenty of female players would like. What's the point in having female pirate avatars if you only have the option of butch clothing and no clasically feminine options? I mean, if it's within reason and won't affect the ESRB rating, let female pirates have whatever they want, baggy oversized dresses to tight pants/skirts and a corset. Who cares?

Edit: And if you think for one minute I'm not going to take the overly masculine looking pirate I rolled when I started, put him in the manliest outfit I can buy, and pair that with some strappy heels just to make people ask questions you are sorely mistaken :P

  • @killthulhu19k I don't think the argument is about over-sexualization of characters. It is about more customization in general.

Honestly, I know I am not in the norm of players, but when starting many games out, I just auto-generate a character until I find one similar to what I want. I personally find it very silly that people spend two hours trying to find a pirate they like or spend 6 hours on Skyrim trying to make everything perfect. However, I can see it being valuable to someone in a game like Skyrim or GTA since it is 3rd person.

I honestly cannot remember what my pirate looks like because I don't emote frequently enough or change clothes that often. I barely even see them when logging into the game because I am just interested in playing.

I will argue against character creation needing more context, but I will also argue for cosmetics for people since that is a huge thing to this game. However, it does not make or break my character if I have a dress, a corset, longer hair, etc. I just find it silly. This game is not that immersive that we need separate categories for people to make their pirate look pretty again you rarely see them.

  • @pink-geek-chic

I don't really like that idea of makeup, we are dirty pirates after all...

But female hair styles would be great.

I was just addressing earlier posts in the thread :) I hate listening to people whine about "over sexualization" just because you have the option of showing a bit of skin. I mean, keep it within reason of course, but you can already have your character run around in their underwear if you choose, so I don't see why having a skirt or a corset would be a big deal.

  • @andreas5524 I understand your reasoning, but if it holds across the board, then there shouldn't be facial hair options. If there are means for personal grooming of facial hair, it then stands that there would be means of other personal grooming (such as make up)

And I'm not talking about "Okay, I'm ready for prom" makeup...just a lip color or blush. Simple choices.

  • @genuine-heather said in A little something for the ladies....:

The new skeleton throne dress looks like the Flinstones...

That is exactly what my husband said! But it's the first dress that I can sit in without flashing the world. I don't want a screen shot up my skirt and the angles to take the throne pictures were awkward trying to avoid it.

  • Jewelry is confirmed coming to the game.

  • Jewelry is coming. I believe there's a slot in the vanity selection screen already in game. I think they should probably do makeup too for the ladies (or the men) the same way facial hair is handled. Hell lots of folks in the 18th century wore makeup, men and women. And it also makes me think of Robert Deniro's Sky Pirate character in Stardust.

And I want to be able to equip that cool "corpse paint" that the OoS ladies have on.

    BLACK METAL.

Absolutely! Options for women are seriously lacking, hair especially but clothing, too. Maybe Rare needs to hire a fashion consultant for 18th century pirate women! 😊

Not to mention the lack of female beards!

  • @genuine-heather Truth be told, I've been wearing that dress on my pirate (male character) as it looked better than the jacket to me. Kind of reminds me of the Child of Atom from Fallout, due to the tattered look.

Sea of Thieves is a game where the developer should aim for a 50/50 ratio between male and female players

Can you explain this a bit?
I think, developers are happy about anybody playing their game without preferences for genders (or other attributes).
Why would/should they aim for a ratio?

  • @longingfern4785 I think he's meaning avatar choices, not actual players. At least, that's what I understood it to mean.

  • Because equality is good?

    @pink-geek-chic
    Hello Miss /Mrs Pink-Geek-Chic.
But one more question, if they would add it ,could they explain that some hairstyles are for female pirates and other for male pirates ....Not to cause another war about sexuality preferences but just to make sure i'm not running around with female hair without realizing...

If you can't tell that it's male or female, why does it matter?

  • @pink-geek-chic said in A little something for the ladies....:

As more and more cosmetic options are introduced into the game, I am surprised at the lack of longer hairstyles and cosmetics geared towards the ladies playing. I would love to see options more tailored too my fellow female pirates. Examples would be pony tails or beach curls (see what I did there). Maybe even some sort of make-up, much in the same way the men have facial hair choices. And, just as I've seen many a female rocking a killer beard, the male populace would also have the choice to don some killer lipstick.

    #girlsarepiratestoo

This is a good idea and something I have wondered why hasn't been included after all the impracticality of corsets is not going to be an issue in this game. Make-up would be cool because it could be branched of into face paints that could cater for both genders while still having the more feminine options such as lipstick and mascara which Johnny Depp wore the latter in Pirates of the Caribbean. I also think the addition of jewellery to would be welcomed because it caters again for both genders and it would be great to have a skull ring that has glowing green eyes.

  • @pink-geek-chic I want the ink eye stains that the order of souls ladies have! If we elect you Pirate Queen can I get a firm commitment that you will get me this cosmetic?
