Adults vs. Kids

  • Kids get a bad rap on these types of games for good reason but, if I'm being completely honest, some of the worst players I've encountered have been "adults."

I'm not talking about griefing (e.g., throwing your own crew's loot overboard or intentionally steering your own ship into a rock to sink it in the middle of a voyage). Most of the time, I don't know whether those perpetrators are kids or adults, stoned or sober, or whatever. I just conveniently categorize griefers (not pirates) as @$$holes.

I'm talking about people are openly hostile and verbally abusive to other players. I've encountered a surprising number of these players since the game came out. I'm a pretty liberal guy. I'm not offended by people who swear in casual conversation; especially among adults.

Kids do stupid stuff like getting drunk as we're approaching a skull fort, or not listening to instructions from the crew. It's often annoying and frustrating and I'll sometimes even leave the game to avoid them...BUUT, in their defense, there are also some great kids out there who I've found to be helpful, cooperative and all-around great players.

Some of the "adults" I've encountered, however, have been far worse than any annoyances I've experienced from kids. The vitriol and hostility I've witnessed from more than a few adults I've encountered should get them banned from the game for good. I've heard people inexplicably swear at young kids, spout racist terms, threaten other players with physical harm, and use sexually inappropriate language in shockingly violent and offensive ways.

I can't imagine I'm the only one who has come across these types of players. It seems like there should be an easier way of reporting them and capturing the offensive audio.

  • yea its too bad. if you don't use audio to interact then you almost miss half the experience. but its these individuals that make me turn it off. i don't want to be hearing that garbage either. but its impossible to enforce

  • Very true, Well behaved and polite kids are great to game with. Not every griefer is a pre-teen boy (though in my opinion most are). There's a lot of teen and college males who just log on for the sake of being annoying in the game and amusing themselves. I've been in massive RTS click fests with allies who were arguably under the influence, and have lost heart breaking games that could have been victories because of it. It angers me, and I've vented on those forums about it because I log onto games to have fun and entertain myself, not to put up with someone else's short comings.

Most pre-teen boys who are griefing are doing so because they want to push the envelope. I guess if you want to get all high minded about it some might have issues at home or something, but I think it's mostly just boys being boys for the sake of it.

The adult griefers (mostly males) on the other hand, are essentially doing the same thing but mostly for their own amusement. Which is too bad and a comment on the society that fosters those kinds of people.

But, in the end there are people who want to be annoying and obnoxious, and thereby make our lives miserable. Whatever. As long as there's a way for the gaming powers that be to address it in a timely manner.
