Timed events. The mistakes and how to fix.

  • Ohoy!
Almost every game that introduces time limited events makes the same mistakes.. And it's frustrating and easy to fix.

    The what:
You introduce an event with for a limited time that requires people to team up. You make people dependant on others.

    Benefits:
Increased cooperation. Friendships. Fun together. Yadayada. It's easy to see why it's great!

    The problem:
Your event has extremely limited replay-ability. There is no reason to do it twice. People do it once for the great rewards and unique loot you promised them, and then return to do other stuff.

This is the case in SoT, WoW etc. etc. Every game makes this mistake.

Since you limited people to need other people it creates one very annoying thing.

    PROBLEM!
If you are not online the first weekend of this event, you will NEVER find anyone who wants to do it with you. You will waste a huge amount of time searching for people and it becomes tedious to do and a bad experience trying to get that epic loot....

    The solution:
Increase replay-ability so its fun to do, to re-do and to REDO again! For the limited time span your event exists you want people to play it no matter how late in the cycle it is. Especially if your lifespan is 2 weeks (which is at least 1 week to short).

You can do it like this:
The best: Random epic rewards. Everytime you do it, you have a chance to get something new / rare / different. It's an easy psychological trick that mobile games do. It helps you do the exact same thing over and over again in the hope to get something.

The technical: Merge servers in event zones (worked in WoW). WHen people enter the area of the event, make sure you merge them with servers that has people waiting. SoT is very empty of people, and thats not good trying to do events.

    The easy: Achievement mechanic:
Make an achievement for killing the beast 10 times.

Other: Add a world information where everyone on the server can see people waiting in the area so they know someone is trying to do it.

I am sure there are other ideas. This literally took me 10 minutes to come up with. But something is needed. I never got to kill the shark, went online 3 times to try for 2 hours each. Fail. And sometimes you have some IRL stuff that you need to do. It sucks I agree.

Hope someone important reads this and embraces the idea of optimising it, as it seems like we will see more timed events in the future of SoT!

    Farewell.

  • I agree with this... within 5 hours of release. I have finished the event and aquired all i feel necessary from it.. and i have no desire to repeat it.

Ill just be getting on with my quest for legend.

  • Agree with Op too. I think if Rare were to make cosmetic specific items. Weapon skins, clothing, ship cosmetics, etc and every time you do the event, you get one. A different one, not the Destiny I will give you 4 if the same armor or weapons deal. Have one cosmetic be special to achieving the event, like the Megladon bow cosmetic. This will also help with creating teams later on in the event as there is a greater likelihood that many people are still looking to collect all the items.

  • they really need to rethink this... weekly events done in 2h or so and you don't have anything to do until the next one is very frustrating... i love the game but as a legendary athena lvl 6 i'm fed up with doing athena's quest over and over and over and over...having nothing else to do gets so borring...i'm sad i love the game but i won't keep playing it that way because i'll just be disgusted and never set foot again in sot which i think is a shame because it just lack content everything else is great.

  • May have been better to have a Throne location for each island, (Throne spawns would rotate, maybe still a limit 10 per server) not had a Doubloon cap of a 100, and just let people go wild. The outfits could still have stayed as a limited time reward. Perhaps this is what will happen after the event. * fingers crossed *

  • The only thing I don't like about the events is that they are limited time, but something that stays in the world. Basically, they've marketed it as an introduction of the world to new mechanics.

The weekly part is awesome! Its kinda like a mini-event every week that everyone tries to do.

However, the best fix would be to allow people to do it forever. I mean, there is no reason that the Marrek event couldn't stay around indefintately.

The draw here is.. you want to participate in the first week of the event, because it is the new shiny thing everyone is going to do it.. so it will be easier to find people to do it.

Then you move on to the next one, but the ability to earn the item is always in the game for those that purchase the game down the road and want the cool shark stuff. It will be real difficult to find someone to do it after the initial event, but not impossible.

However, what I have a feeling what will happen is that they are building up the catalog of microtransaction store.. and this new currency is the microtransaction currency you can buy.

You will only be able to get "free" doubloons for taking part in the events, but then afterwards you will need to purchase them for real money.

Since alliance levels only mean access to more cosmetics, it wouldn't run into a pay to win mechanic buy being able to buy reputation.

I got off topic... but I have a feeling why they are limiting the time for these events is because they originally had the plans for the MT store to cover the limited time even items for purchase.
