Can't name our pirates.

  • It is possible for Rare to make it so our in game pirates can have names unique to this game instead of our generic Xbox Live gamer tags.

    But they chose not to.

Let's encourage them to change their minds to allow in game naming.

Hard to feel connected to my avatar as an in game character when he has no identity unique to himself.

  • I agree, I too would like this. Seems a bit silly that I'd have to get an entirely new gamertag to have a pirate-y name in-game.

  • Your Gamer Tag's only as generic as you make it mate, it's no different than any name you'd be able to pick in the game itself.

It's also entirely up to you what you want other players to call you. One of my crew we simply call by his real name rather than his Gamer Tag. A random I once played with didn't care what we called him, so we spent 3 hours calling him Betsy.

  • @perfecshionist the problem with that be how can ye identify a pirate if he be a griefer or a cheat? Ye need their gamertag so ye can report them.

T'would be pointless to say "aye, Blackbeard be a scoundrel and a cheat" an the sea be overflowing with Captain Blackbeards...

MMORPGs have managed to connect character names to accounts for how long now. While a gamertag is pretty handy at a glance I don't think that is a good argument against allowing people to name themselves.

  • @john-hatter I'm no against the idea, don't get me wrong. 's long as there still be a way to know who someone really is, go for it.

Although I imagine it would mostly be unimaginative repetition or attempts at being crude or offensive. Case in point me crew were joined by a random o'er the weekend, he introduced himself on the mic as Captain Black P***s... that be the type of quality we would be surrounded in.

You understand that the Live Gamertag is across multiple games unless the game lets you choose an in game name, which some do. Sea of Thieves does not.

Expecting players to change their gamer tag to match the game they are playing that day is not a reasonable solution to the problem of the game itself not allowing name creation in game.

Also, gamertags in Xbox live are a depletable resource. If someone else uses it you can't.

Which is a problem on a platform with 50 million accounts.

It is also a problem for trying to change you gamer tag to a tag that speaks to the game you are currently playing since there are few if any tags available that would fit the game.

They can simply add an in game reporting function that resolves server side to their tag. It is being tracked server side.

Right now the reporting function sucks anyway.

Prior to this game the last time I was involved in xbox live was....battlefield bad company 2 I think it was. Anyways the point is I have no reference to how things are these days but from my past experience I feel like you get the same crudeness when it comes to gamertags. Either option is giving the player the choice to name themselves so either option could result 'poorly'. I'm a big rpg/mmo/etc fan and if xbox or anyone for that matter told me I had to name all the characters after a single gamertag throughout every game I would never buy from them. I just got lucky here and needed to make a new account for the game regardless.

  • @perfecshionist & @John-Hatter
Aye, as I said I'm not against the idea. I think it be good people want to create their own identity. Just throwing a few idea out as to why it's no there.

Exactly, to be honest if I had known up front that we were stuck with our gamer tags this game might not have even been on my radar as a future game I was interested in.

As an RPG and MMO player for decades the idea that my in game character has to use my gamertag would indicate that the development team has no interest in creating a world that feels immersive.

  • I think part of the problem with the underlying mechanics of the game is they tied it too heavily with the xbox live culture. As stated I have no recent experience in xbox live to be fair but the whole gamertag things screams to me FPS. But then the game wants you to immerse yourself in the world they have created so it has that rpg kinda thing going but you can't even name yourself to really get into it? Then they want it to be a community based thing but your locked into the friends list thing. I dunno. When it comes to this aspect of the game I get dizzy.

Yeah, none of it feels well integrated or thought through by the dev team.

They took the most expedient path.

I think these problems are solveable if they choose to address them since the in game name is merely a cosmetic display if they track the gamer tag server side.

But Rare needs to decide they want to do this. I am wondering if they ever will decide to.

I'm optimistic. Going off what I've seen so far as where they want the game to go I would be surprised if it wasn't eventually added...assuming Microsoft isn't putting their foot down and forcing the xbox live side of things. Who knows.

At the end of the day I feel like this game is more on the development track of an MMORPG. While I get all the arguments and frustrations people have over current content it is the type of game that really does need time. World of Warcraft wasn't built in a day as it were.

    Time will tell...

Their recent content announcement being such a right turn from their "cosmetic store in June" original path makes me more optimistic.

It also indicates that Microsoft has lost a battle over priorities due to game community complaints and reviews.

I have no doubt that the in game store being a priority was a Microsoft driven plan.

Three major content updates in the next 5 months seems much more Rare driven.
