Controller Button Mapping: Ideas to Improve your Play Style

  • G'day Maties!!!

The first thing that most Hardcore players look for in a new game is button mapping in order to enhance their gameplay or increase their efficiency. I am by no means a hardcore player, but I did do some experimenting with the button mapping. But I have also noticed that many of the normal or casual players I have teamed up with have not bothered to look into this and could be wasting a valuable resource.

So, I decided to make this thread so that we can all share our current button configurations and perhaps help others improve their gameplay experience.

At the moment, I have only changed the D-pad configuration and I moved the Emote and Comms Grids to be on the LEFT and RIGHT (instead of up and down) and then I assigned my Bananas to the UP and my Planks to DOWN. That way I can heal myself while in the midst of a battle or can rush down to repair without having to stop and manual select them from my item wheel.

I have some ideas for the other buttons, but I will do some experimenting to see how effective they are first before posting them here. I am sure that there are other great ideas out there and I would be interested in hearing them.

Edit: Decided to add this blurb from a post below to help anybody in similar circumstances:
When ingame, just go to Settings and then select Controller (I believe, I am at work and just going off my memory right now) and it gives you access to all your button assignations (binds). Just remove the one's you want and then reassign (bind) them to where you want them.
Learn from my mistake though, make sure you don't inadvertently un-assign (unbind) a different button. I somehow removed my jump button before cashing my treasures, and spent 5 minutes "missing" my jump off the dock before I realized that it wasn't working. D*****s that I am

  • @psyperactive81 That is absolutely genius. I keep forgetting to take a look at that and I really should. Another good one i've heard is to make the jump button a bumper or something so you can still spin about while jumping.

  • This is absolutely a brilliant idea. Unfortunately I am rather an idiot when it comes to things like this. I am unsure how to exactly remap the controller and am currently at work and cannot play around with. If you could please provide simple instructions or a link on how to accomplish, I would greatly appreciate.

  • I have everything default apart from the jump button on the left stick, my 3 free shortcuts are: dpad left: spyglass, dpad right:shovel and click right stick: banana.

  • @psyperactive81 lol, I could see myself doing something like that.

Yeah, my crewmate wouldn't stop laughing about it once I told him what had happened

Interesting, I will have to try binding the jump button to the left stick. Maybe I'll try that for the banana

I can see the value in that, will have to give that a try.

  • My current setup:
    Dpad left- spyglass
    Dpad right- voyage wheel
    Right click analog- lantern
    Right bumper- 🍌

Nice!! I like the lantern Idea and the banana on the right bumper seems very efficient

  • @psyperactive81 if everyone in my party is using a headset I also put something on the up dpad

  • @akbar37
    Really? Like what?

  • Have been looking at the suggestions below and I am starting to like the idea of having the banana assigned to one the thumbsticks, and perhaps the lantern as well.
I also liked the idea of assigning the jump to a thumstick as well.
    Any more ideas out there?

  • @psyperactive81 it all depends on which role I’m playing more within the crew at the moment.
So if I’m on repair duty I put the planks there. Looking for snakes an instrument etc..

  • I didn't know about the item quick selects until last night because they're not there when you open up the settings from the main menu/pregame lobby.

If you want to change them, you have to be in-game.
