Sea Of Monsters!

  • Hey Rare! And those who read this post!

SOT has almost been out a month now and ARRRGH Its been a blast! So many cool memories already and awesome people met online.

People have obviously been providing feedback fairly quickly on the whole game and its pretty clear that the passion for the game is growing and I know Rare is happy with whats being given in feedback form.

I hope the game thrives and grows rapidly within the next few months!

    Sea Of Monsters!

    The kraken
I am sure everyone by now have met a certain Slimy Beast and observed it’s mighty presence in the world. But sorry to say Rare even though I love The Kraken, its pretty undelivered. Yeh its only really a concept to start with and thats why I love it but its needing a massive overhaul to make it a legend! A real fear of the seas.

**BOOM! “DID WE HIT A REEF?” The water slowly turns black to a deep muffled groan... Everyone runs to the main deck to observe the water. The deadly calm ocean is an unsettling feeling. The boat rocking vigorously in the waves but still failing to move. As the low tone creepy music plays and soon intensifies... everyone is struggling to understand what’s happening... 30 seconds have past to what seems minutes. SUDDENLY at lightning speed a crew member is snatched off deck by a massive tentacle! Everyone screams! With an echoing cry of “KRAKEN!” The music jumps into a very intense beat! A massive roar from below signals all and confirms everyones fear. To 8 massive tentacles rise from the depths. As one violently smashes into the boat and wraps around it while another swoops down to grab another crew member. EVERYONE seems scattered and panicking! A third tentacle wraps around the main mast. Suddenly as all seems as worse as it can get... a forth tentacle grabs the stern wrapping around the Captains cabin.

The water begins to intensify and churn under the certainly doomed galleon. The water turns violently to what soon is realised as a massive maelstrom. As soon comes apparent the mouth of the great sea legend appears deep within the twisting abyss. As crew members fire the cannons to loose the attached tentacles for a desperate escape the galleon smashes into teeth of The Kraken and leans into the massive jaws. The tentacles reach towards the central region of the area and crush down on the ship... crushing its crew. The water around the beast comes crashing in and with one final Roar! The beast vanishes into the massive crashing watery abyss to which a galleon and crew have been taken by the legend.

The water settles and returns to the normal colour.**

The kraken should have a staged attack similar to how it already attacks... but should have 6 stages. 1) the first attack which will start with a sudden snatch of a crew member followed by the first roar and arise of all tentacles. 2) the first tentacle grabbing the front of the ship with a second roar to which players must fight to remove it while fighting the other more advanced and quicker tentacles than the current versions. 3) the 2nd tentacle grabbing the main mast with a 3rd roar to which players now need to remove two tentacles plus fight the others. 4) a third tentacle grabs the rear of the ship wrapping around the captains cabin. Players now running low on recourses will need to fight these three tentacles while the others batter the ship too. 5) on the 5th roar the water starts to churn and a maelstrom is formed and the ships begins to be swallowed while still being battered by 8 tentacles. Players will need to quickly removed the attached tentacles and patched the holes to quickly sail out of the maelstrom before entering the mouth. 6) if unsuccessful on the final roar the tentacles on the boat will pull the ship inwards violently into the mouth of the beast while the other 5 tentacles collapsed inwards bringing the ship to a crushing death in the beasts mouth. The water will follow in and the Kraken will vanish.

How The Kraken in the final stage could look alt text

Throughout players will need to fire cannons, patch holes and attack the attached tentacles. Instead of 3 hits the attached tentacles will need to absorb 10 hits from a blunderbust while the other tentacles attack and eat players. They need to be more voilent by picking up players by grabbing them and sucking them up too. If players dont attack the kraken will devour the ship within 3 minutes ... however if they defend well the kraken will loose interest within 20 minutes. This rare event needs to be long! And definitely crew crippling! If the kraken is survived when it vanishes it will release alot of treasure which will float to the surface. When a galleon is eaten their treasures will also be released to which neighbouring players can take from the area.

The kraken just like currently can attack several ships at once. However i cannot see how a fleet of 5 ships can attack the beast so maybe up the tentacle amount to 12 or 14. This event needs to be awesome and definitely live up to the name. The ocean staying black will hide the fact theres no real body but looking down in the abyss will show 2 very creepy red eyes. When it comes to the final stages and the mouth appears, this head should be somewhat shown and massive teeth rise from the depths it should have those two eyes just under the surface of the turning water.

The Kraken needs a body and needs to be a staged monster... if its too technically demanding then shrink the kraken to a size thats able to have a body.

megalodon this should be a rare encounter that is always in the world you could find it if look hard enough. A shark but alot bigger to a size of at least 2 galleons in length. It should have 4 versions of attack. It swims like a normal shark and hunts down crews if wishes. Even when jumping to an island it swims around waiting patiently.

    Attacks...

    • A Destructive Ram - swimming straight at the ship smashing into its side which will violently knock and rock a boat causing serious damage.
    • A hull bite - because of its size the meg can bite the hull causing hull damage that needs patching quickly. The teeth of the shark should come through these holes making them eligible for attack to make the shark release
    • A deck slam - jumping throm the water it can land on deck seriously rocking the ship and causing massive water amounts to fill the boat. If lands on a player its instant death and the beast also has the ability to snatch players in its mouth if players get too close. The shark will stay on deck before rolling back into the depths within 40 seconds.
    • If players fall into the water the meg will immediately swim and eat the players.

Here are two Concepts for The Meg!

If the Meg bites the Galleons hull this is what should be seen

Seen heading towards the port side of the galleon for a ram attack

The shark will multiple times b line towards the boat this is the opportune moment to load the cannonballs into it. Eventually after taking 50 hits from cannon and blunderbus fire the shark will loose interest and will quickly swim away across the map where it will return to its normal state and hunt another passing ship. If successfully defend off the creature it will regurgitate 5 chests of “Megalodon Captains Chests” worth alot of gold. Maybe a few skulls too.

This creature like I said its always in the world and can be found if spot it. It swims at really depths and sometimes shallow depths in which you can see a large shadow moving through the water. You can sometimes be swimming when suddenly massive jaws come and snap you.

That would be an awesome addition to the world to not only be able to observe a meg casually swimming around but to also be hunted by it. Again its a rare event to be attacked by it and may require some trigger like having alot of treasure on board or everyone playing music at the same time within 30 metres of it. Unfortunately due to its size a sloop wont have much of a chance and if hunted by the meg and unsuccessful at defending it off.. with one big chomp the sloop can be devoured in one.

    other additional monsters

    • Giant crab - i have seen the paintings Rare 😁 i leave this to you maybe a super rare island encounter. Digging in the wrong spot turns out the be the grabs shell... waking it up, emerging from the sands and you need to fight and kill it where you take its claws to sell for a big reward. Claw grab, claw throw, body slam attacks.

    • Giant snake - wrap around ships fight its head and defend against its venomous spit... pesky snakes 😡 maybe it spits out little minions that invade the ship to which you also need to kill. Eventually beating it until it drops a few teeth and scooping up puddles of venom and selling it for a reward.

    • mobydik (its censors the word 😂) - why not? Defeating it ( not killing) gives you oil to sell for another big reward. Tail slam, boat crab attacks.

    • giant crocodile - similar to both the crab and meg... always in the world maybe hiding in plain sight to which its triggered by digging on it accidentally or playing music in the short vicinity of it. Can find it swimming around the shallows of an island... has a tail swing attack, death roll, jaws snap, charging towards players to eat them.

WOW thats alot of typing... I will try to create some concepts if anyone is interested and post them here. There will be a way of making all of this technically possible in sea of thieves and damn it will be awesome! There are plenty of other threats to add too like pirañas, evil mermaids, schools of leaches and shark hunting packs (or whatever they are called 😂) hammerheads, tiger sharks etc.

Rare please let me know what you think Id love to know if will consider these ideas... I do not want credit! This is for the improvements of SOT but Id like to know if like the ideas. If you actually do take these ideas please say so as I would love to see the development process of making these things come to life!

Cheers all! Like I said will try make concepts.

    Sail safe!

  • We seem to be on a similar wavelength, i posted a very similar topic yesterday.

Here is a link if you are interested in having a lool

  • @lordvader1o1 the megalodon is not the size of 2 galleons

  • @roughleech03117 no but im thinking of what size it would need to be to be able to bite a galleons hull both sides.

  • UPDATED: added 3 concept photoshop images for The Kraken & Megalodon.

  • @lordvader1o1 Dude! That kraken idea! hell yes! That way you're never 100% sure if it's the kraken or reef/rock and it adds an extra feeling of suspense!

And personally I think the kraken should be something to be feared, not some boss you can grind for lots of gold. I love the idea of the tentacles too, and moving faster to snatch crewmates (I saw a kraken encounter the other day, and I must admit it started out better than I expect given how everyone talks it down, the tentacle wrapped around the ship and rocked it which was pretty cool! but people weren't being snatched enough and then the tentacles sort of stopped and just stayed in the air doing not much of anything? what's up with that?)

I don't like the idea of a maelstrom personally :) The kraken should be strong but summoning a maelstrom is a bit too crazy AND the maelstrom should be a separate thing in my opinion :) Perhaps a weather event or something summoned by a heathen God for instance :)

I love the idea of a staged kraken attack, but having said that I'm not sure if stages are necessary, it can just be a boss which is more interactive than it is currently! I don't think there is any reason to overcomplicate it :) Just a large monster with stronger powerful attacks is sufficient in my mind. But yes! Add a body for goodness sake!

Love the megalodon idea too! Nothing wrong with it being two galleons in size - look at the size of the kraken :P

YES GIANT CRAB!! A land boss! Orr it spawns in the ocean and when on land some trigger makes it walk ashore and start walking towards you. Imagine how creepy that would be. You're just minding your own business looking at a riddle and hear a trigger sound, then you look to the shore and see this giant grab emerge from the water!
