How to implement passive mode

  • They shouldn't be allowed to turn anything in, shouldn't take up a server spot, shouldn't be visible to other players, and can't turn off passive mode without switching servers.

  • Wait...I didn’t know there was a passive mode on Sea of Thieves? REALLY?! That’s cool for relaxing I guess!

  • what would the use of this be for? exploration?

It's a popular request. People like to just sail around and take in the scenery. Think Euro Truck Simulator but on the seas.

  • @shofficer then someone needs to make a sailing simulator. if this would ever get added itd be the last thing on their list

    As it should be

But if this is something they're considering adding because of all the requests, this is how I'd want it done.

  • @shofficer I personally think the best way to do a passive mode is to click a button, call it "uninstall".

  • @shofficer Nope.

1st off I’ll say that based on MY personal time playing, passove mode isn’t as necessary as I thought it’d be.
Sure I hardly spend time exploring vs frantically trying to do whatever the hell it is I am doing at all times, but still.

With how infrequent it seems you actually get put into servers with other ppl it all seems good. You can usually tell right away if your instance is full, and if it is just back out and try again. Had a wonderful time doing a skull fort today with my crew, not a single sail was seen in the distance.

But to those who say you should earn nothing in a PvE mode, that is r******d. 1. Skeletons (especially shadow/Golds) are very formidable, their aim is retardedand they can focus fire you to hell.
    2. Create skeleton, naval or whatever the hell NPC ships you want to put in those servers. Give those ships realistically sized/large crews to make up for them not being as challenging as player crews.
    3. Reduce the amount of your rewards, by 50% at the MOSTs for Gold and only in PvP can Rep be earned, it’ll carry over into PvE but no vice versa. Also new/special titles (such as Pirate Legend) should be locked for PvE servers until sometime after people in PvP earn them first.

EDIT: I am AWARE that Rare said no to PvE servers and NPC ships etc, just saying that if they WERE to delve into giving players PvE options, that’s how it could/should be done.

No. It is 100% unacceptable to be able to earn any amount of gold in carebear mode.

  • @shofficer What is unacceptable is people inhibiting and telling other people how to play a game or be a pirate, which is what most PvP encounters already do without the forums.

No one is telling you how to play the game.

  • This is a pirate game... passive mode would ruin it. What happens to those players who want to hunt others? That's the whole idea of being a pirate...

  • The main challenge ofthe game is the constant threat of other players. The voyages are jokes and they're are virtually no threats at sea without players trying to get your loot. The whole game is quite literally built around this concept and doesn't work without it.

Disabling PvP eliminates 90% of the challenge this game presents. It is beyond easy mode and absolutely should not grant any kind of rewards.

  • @shofficer Everyone who dumps on PvE is telling them that their way of playing is illigitimate and thus telling them how to play.

I personally just think the game needs major changes to improve PvP, but I get aggravated when I see people vehemently talk down to players who hate the way others affect their experience in the game. It doesn’t seem like the type of community Rare was hoping to foster for this game.

  • @isukun That’s true, but the 90% of the time when others are trying to get your loot it is at Skull Forts. The rest of the time they are just doing hit and runs or trying to spawn/repeat kill. That or most people who attack are highly inept and don’t know how to wait for you to actually accumulate said treasure (which seems to be the case in most of my sessions tbh).

There are players who carry large assortments of swag that can be stolen- but those types of players are basically fishing for people to take their stuff which makes up a minority and frankly is just creating that risk intentionally.

So when you think about it, people on all ends of the spectrum are arguably playing the game wrong.

  • @drakebg757 So, your complaint is that people tend to fight over skull fortresses, something the devs said was the whole point of telegraphing when they were active. Or the way people perform hit and runs because there is no easy way to tell if another ship has treasure or is hostile without risking your own safety. Or that a small number of crafty players use the risk systemto bait other players. None of that sounds like people playing the game wrong.

I think you're missing the point of this post then. We're not s******g on pve, we're talking about how to implement a carebear mode without ruining the core gameplay.

  • @shofficer That right there, the fact you even call it a ‘carebear’ mode is half the problem with people like you in this games community.

While loads of people may feel that way, no one is belittling PvP as ‘idiotic p***k’ mode or ‘inflated ego’ mode.

Trying to defend this games PvP by saying things like ‘it’s THE point of the game’ or ‘This game is too s****y to support itself without PvP’ just shows how little faith and love you have for SoT. It also shows how maybe instead of the people who enjoy the portions of the game that it directly pushes you towards, its intolerant people like yourself who don’t belong in it.

Maybe you can ask the mods for a safe space forum where people only use nice words.

Do you have anything to add to the topic? Any ideas on how to implement this? Any objections to the ideas I proposed?

  • @shofficer I already gave you a well balanced response with specific points.

PvE grants half the gold gains and NO gains for Rep. if you want to unlock higher tier/more meaningful cosmetics you need to go into the PvP entwined servers.
PvE should facilitate what PvP does by adding skeleton Pirate crews or naval ones that try to stop you and take your loot. These NPC crews should be much larger than ‘real’ crews to add challenge and should have at least one actual Captain tier enemy aboard.
The AI is already incredibly accurate with cannons and guns so facing off against large NPC crews at sea should give PvE players that same experience that is ‘integral’ to the game.

PvP servers should then be facilitated to try prioritizing at least slightly more people in each game-world, this way there isn’t a heavy loss of players to fight on that side of things. Plus PvE rewards being limited and restricted can still push ppl into PvP eventually.

  • Well said Mr. Shofficer.

A free sail mode with no other players is something that's acceptable but being able to get money and do voyages and improve your ship should only be an option if your playing in live pirate servers
