The Crew System (Feature Request)

  • I know RARE has said they are working on a change to the crew system. As it is now, the only option is to load into the game with your selected ship type and crew size and be locked into that for your entire play session (Even if someone leaves leading to the inevitable brigged rando). My idea is to separate the crew size from the ship choice, Instead allowing the player to join the world alone and invite as many friends to their crew as they want (up to the game's limit) at any time or open it up to matchmaking (a possible function of the tavern). Then at any time spawn in a ship of their choice from the shipwright at an outpost. This is not only a solution to the crew system but also adds interesting functionality to the NPCs.

How does everyone feel about this? Any ideas to add?
@Rare-Employee Could we see a system like this worked into the game?

  • Could also see some cool customization in the form of ship respawn animations (Think popping out of the sea like the flying dutchman, or phasing in with a ghostly effect).

  • i'm still a newb. why are rando's inevitably brigged?
they could sure use some simple and obvious changes. multiple times we've had to restart our games to add a 4th person to a galleon. why should this be hard, to change your crew size from 3 to 4 or vice versa?

When my friends and I are trying to play on a galleon and communicating but one of us has to leave and the game forces that position to be filled by a random player, with no option to kick the player and limit our crew down to 3 players the only option is to throw that player in the brig until they quit and continue to do that or make everyone quit and restart the session in a 3 person crew.

  • @dabomber117 You could just let people play with you first. Even though I did that three times today 2/3 were brigged the third had no mic but helped out every now and then. It isn't fun doing everything and watching people play music and vomit on you but I try to give them a chance, I've met some cool randoms.

  • Also this just occurred to me: Expanding on the idea of using the tavern for matchmaking, having outposts be places where you could create formal alliances with other crews in the session or just restructure your crew ie. kick/recruit would be great. Also kicking crew members could just kick them from the crew and not from the game. I think this would lend a little bit of pirate authenticity to the experience too since recruiting taverns and pirate home ports were real things.

  • @dabomber117 why not give the rando a chance to prove he's ship shape? we're so early in this game. i'm finding about 50-60% of randos want to play this game the right way, including communicating. brigging them without cause only dampers our chance of building a long term player base. just one newbs opinion. (and please don't brig me ;)
