High ping

  • So... I played every single beta and scale test that we had and when you guys added the FPS and Ping counter to show on screen feature, I had my ping ranging from 190 to 215ms, but I thought "Hey, this is scale test, it is ok to have high latency, things can't and will go wrong here" so I just ignored and sailed ahead.

But now that the game is out, I still get the same ping 190-215 ms while in other games like Overwatch, Dota 2, CS:GO, Fortnite and etc. I get around 40ms.

I'm from Brazil, so I'm guessing we have no South America servers to play on, am I right?
Because 200ms is like I'm playing on North America servers...

This is really frustrating, because I love the game as it is, but it just sucks to have this high latency in-game.

  • @timeekk Same here... Also from brazil. Truly annoying considering we live in SA, and South America servers are a must.

  • I'm from Bethlehem Palestine Israel, and I found my self playing with 3 American guys with 300 ping, thought it was cool game but ping ruined it for me, microsoft is a big company and should be able to fix this

  • I'm from the East coast of the US, and I'm getting 130+ping as well, where other games usually sit comfortably around 40.
Makes it unreasonably annoying to try and sail like this.

  • @quimpers that's weird... I wonder where this server is from. Or maybe the high ping is an issue due to high volume of players online at the same time.. idk, hope it is a temporary thing

  • Same here, playing from Brazil, 160-200 ping. The high latency itself is not a big deal, but there is a language barrier for some players when it comes to speaking a foreign language (not my case, but still, Brazil has a high number of non english-speaking gamers).

M$ should/could really work this out for us.

  • @anchomarley im from Denmark and at prime game time in the afternoon around 20-21 o'clock i see ping getting higher than 65-70 that is the lowest i have seen. im getting from 150 to 300 ping when its real bad.
im thinking sesa of thieves only have servers in usa. that is c**p cause i dont want to pay that price to be locked to usa servers that is around the world. i want EU servers/ localized servers that almost all other games have. i dont wanna be paired up with ppl around the world when in from EU. i guess that is the main reason for ppl having high ping.

  • Same here, when playing games like csgo, overwatch etc I get 40 ping but when I play SOT I get 150+ ping.

  • @knaseren1974 Rare is located in Twycross, Leicestershire. That is not in the US and I as a gamer/pirate from the United States can tell you we have crazy high ping as well as the rubber banding that comes with it.

I had assumed the servers were overseas or mixed an not localizing people to their appropriate server in comparison to location.

  • I'm sorry to be relieved but i thought the problem was me :) I have good latency all around but this game. Currently ranging from 120-180. Yesterday I had 90-100 for a few moments so im guessing its in the works.

BTW the location of the studio itself does not matter. They are probably using AWS or some other similar service provider with server farms all over. When you have this kind of stress handling problems its usually the server code that needs some optimization - some pesky little bug/bad solution that needs to be squashed. Or maybe something in the server provider configurations (those are quite complicated). Hope that happens soon cause 180 ms is making this pretty game look very bad. :(

  • Just found out that Sea of Thieves is hosted in Microsoft Azure. You can check the servers over here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/global-infrastructure/regions/
Too bad there is only 1 server for South America. And I still don't get why they are throwing me into NA or EU servers all the time... something is not right.
