What do you do with gold...?

  • You're place in this beautiful world where you can do voyages and destroy others all in search of Gold. Its the currency everyone fights over.

But... what do you do with it? Is there any purpose other than cosmetics? I understand that they want to keep the game balanced, but there needs to be some way to improve yourself with gold. Some reason to want it other than cosmetics.

EDIT: Personally I understand that offering no upgrades means instant balance, but with gold being the driving factor to do anything, it needs to have a purpose.

What ur telling me is once I play enough for a cool set of cosmetics I no longer have anything to lose/gain so I either just go for pvp or stop playing. Thats my issue. There Needs to be some, balanced, way of upgrading your ship/buying new ships with gold to make it a grind for a PURPOSE and not just... a grind for some cosmetics.

  • @frunchtost Spend it on RUM!

  • @frunchtost I was kidding... well, I hope we can buy ship upgrades in the final version...

  • By what is being said across the forums here, gold is used for cosmetic gear, weapons, and ship cosmetic items.

There is no stat advantags in the game. Gold will pile up in your inventory with little reason to spend it other than on more cosmetic gear in future dlc.

Not sure how the game can last for more than a year with this cosmetic progression model. Playing for fun only lasts so long when the fun is doing things to gain gold,

  • @uberkull Exactly my point, I was wondering if anything had been announced about this.

  • @frunchtost You can buy a few weapons we know to be in the game, but mostly its for cosmetics.
But remember, if you sink your ship you'll have to pay to customize it again. I can see that adding up after a bit if you're careless..

  • In life, money buys us power, in various ways. It's is one of the most core concepts of our existance. We work, spend some money on food and that food extends our life by a few more days. This game doesn't have anything like that. And they've said they never will.

I'm still loving the game design so much, but I feel balanced upgrades would have offered a better experience over no upgrades. The rule I follow is mortality of power, that no matter how much you have you can always be brought down by the smallest thing. For example, a player spends 20000 gold and a super duper galleon, then a player spawns in and fires a cannon shot that hits the magazine and blows the whole ship up.

That or maintenance costs. This is a great method. You can buy upgrades, but each on has a continous cost. Rotary cannon? 1200 gold and 200 gold an hour to maintain. It means players can upgrade, but only for a limited time, unless they are good enough to keep up with payments. If the upgrades intial and continous cost were high enough, they'd be a rare and terryfying sight and there'd always be something to spend gold on. I might do a thread on this and see what people think...

  • @uberkull Guild Wars 2 has been running for years on Cosmetics only. In FFXIV, a common phrase is "The real end-game is glamour (cosmetics)".

SoT will be fine. I do think they should consider either lowering the amount of gold you get from chests or raising the price of purchases. Even in the stress test I was able to buy just about everything there is.

  • @sloth-demon-685 said in What do you do with gold...?:

But remember, if you sink your ship you'll have to pay to customize it again.

WOAH what? I missed that. Which article did you read that in?

  • @sloth-demon-685 Is losing cosmetics when your ship sinks confirmed? Source?

  • @im-axis-rahl I honestly forget what dev vid I saw it on man.
But they did say that if your ship sinks you'd have to pay to customize it again.

You wouldn't have to re buy the actual item, but you'd have to pay to apply them to your ship again.

  • @uberkull said in What do you do with gold...?:

Playing for fun only lasts so long

I'm not sure why, but I find this statement a bit depressing.

Seriously though, I think the gold is supposed to be part of your standing as a pirate. After all, what was the measure of a pirate's success? How rich they were. Being feared was nice, but it was just a tool to get more gold.

Other than buying cosmetics, I think your gold is part of rising above your fellow pirates. Just how big you can make your personal gold hoard.

  • @v**a-hombre So we're playing to watch a number rise? We desperately need ship upgrades. Im sorry to everyone saying it would be hard to balance, but remember. if they are using upgraded ships, if they die they lose more.

  • @frunchtost

Well, supposedly we'd be playing cause it's fun. At least that's why I'm playing. I enjoy sailing my sloop around, whether looking for treasure or just cruising the ocean.

I like the idea of no upgrades because it takes the pressure off me to stay on the forefront of power level. I can do whatever I think is fun for me in SoT and know that when I run into another player, I have just as much of a chance against them as I ever did and ever will.

The thing is, this game really is supposed to be played for fun. Even being a "Pirate Legend" is more about simple prestige than any tangible advantages. If someone needs more than that to have fun, that's fine. But I don't think SoT is that kind of game.

  • Gold buys Cosmetics, Additional equipment (Blunderbus/Eye of Reach) and is used to purchase treasure maps/quests, And upgrade available jobs to get better ones etc.
Hopefully it will also be used to purchase items to make your ship look pretty etc.

  • @v**a-hombre Playing "for fun" is a very vague thing to say, your fun is very different from other people's fun.

Now don't get me wrong, for the short term this model seems great, no upgrades, so no advantages.

But... If you think about what is going to make people wanna stick with the game long term, it needs a progression system. Now Pirate legends is great, but you get to pirate legend to.... earn more money. With witch all you can do is buy cosmetics.

In order for this game to survive past the hype period where everyone is so exited and hyped up, it needs an upgrade system, a purpose for gold that you can actually LOSE.

  • Gold might lose its luster in the long run, but by that time the die hard fans will still find this game most enjoyable to play.

  • @mrinternational Not that long term actually, even in the stress tests a lot of my friends got a majority of the cosmetics they wanted. Well what then, if the end goal is cosmetics, is that it?

YES, Ik, PVP in this game is insanely awesome, but PVP and stealing from people needs to feel like you actually took something from them that was worth something to them, like you actually gained something and they lost something.

  • @frunchtost the end goal isnt about "cosmetics", its about having fun "your way" with your friends on your journey to obtain cosmetics, which is a bonus. Not everything was in the beta there will be other things to buy that will increase the longevity of the game for months to come. Sure gold will lose its merit over time, and eventually we will have everything we want when it comes to cosmetics, but you shouldn't focus the whole game on "gold" cause if you do you'll tire yourself out faster from the game instead of enjoying it for what it can be. I do agree that we should have an aggressive progression system that will increase the games playtime, but if they dont add that or much more content then maybe this game isnt for you or for other people unfortunately. I on the other hand will be enjoying this game for a long time, and hopefully you do too.
    Mr. I

  • @mrinternational That might be fine for you, but the game will cease to be fun when everyone leaves when they realize all the gold they have been saving up is only for a hat jacket and nada.

  • Obviously, you hoard it like the pirate you are, spend it on grog and women (or man, or whatever... I don't discriminate), and live the good life!

But remember, if you sink your ship you'll have to pay to customize it again.

I very much doubt that and would like a proper source on that statement. because I am pretty sure we buy/unlock customizations once, and then get to keep/apply them as long and often as we want. everything else would just render the whole system pointless because barely anyone would waste their gold on non-permanent cosmetics, and you'll only see default ships all over the place. Yes, you might have to re-apply them each session and maybe even each time it sinks, but I doubt (and never heard anywhere) that that would cost something.

  • That idea sounds great to me, having to rebuy cosmetics. It would mean that any ship found to possess a large number of cometics was clearly either;

    • worth their salt for being able to survive long enough to get that many on the ship or
    • very confident in their ability to win battles and therefore not worried about losing said cosmetics.

Better still, a system where each cosmetic addition has a chance of being lost when the ship is sunk (maybe they recover some and some are lost to sea.) 50% chance on each item? And then in storms, there's only a 20% chance of retaining each item when the ship is sunk, makes battles in storms super intense, and giving people more reason to fear them.

  • @inbred-chimera They have the prices of stuff nearly doubled in this test. They are just tests so I think we won't know what to want until the game is out. Not that I think it's wrong to raise concerns for the devs to lurk and see, but I'll be keeping my pants on until I see the full game.

  • @revanjstone I don't mean to seem rude, but I'm struggling to see any connection between your comment and mine. Did you tag me by mistake?

  • @inbred-chimera Psh what? I just like you man that's all!!... Yes.. lol I meant to tag the french guy.

  • @revanjstone ah, then all is well. I was worried I'd missed some deeper level of understanding.

  • @revanjstone I agree, but when I play a game I need some goal. Thats what I take enjoyment from. Setting a long term goal and reaching it with my friends. Cosmetics does not seem like a worthy goal to me, personally I care less about cosmetics than a tangible benefit as a goal.

Now, the legends progression system will satisfy that for a while, but adding a purpose for gold seems like a needed addition to me. (Other than cosmetics)

  • @frunchtost I agree with this. I am expecting more things to pursue at launch. Can't wait to see what they are and if they are absent.. I will load my cannons!

  • @frunchtost You need to save that gold for retirement. When you've had your fill of the life of a swashbuckler you can retire to one of the local islands and become a politician. I hear being a politician these days requires a great deal of up front investment but the long term prospects for income are substantial. Arrrggghhh!

  • It's mainly to unlock the items that normally you'd have from the get-go with a proper character creator. Instead, you're forced to select a random pirate and grind the gold to buy the mustache and hairstyle combination you've always wanted. (Sorry Mike Chapman, can't defend that utterly stupid decision). Also, you can buy cosmetics for the ship you don't own =P.

I'll just jump in every now and then and PVP a bit. In my opinion Sea of Thieves is more of an arena deathmatch, with some twist.

  • I think after a while gold will become superflous, meaning you could horde so much and run out of things to buy. Afterall there is just so much cosmetic stuff you can buy, then it becomes meaningless. You cant wear everything at once, say you've got gold everything (including underpants), your ship has every conceiveable knick knack. Sure theres the next level legendary - but its the same process over and over again.

  • @revanjstone gold from chest been upgraded too ^^
