I was thinking sea of thieves could easily have in-game notes, similar to Bethesda open world games, or any game with audio diaries. These could be little letters or books scattered across the islands. You don't 'take them', as they're not physical treasure rewards like chests or skulls. You would just read them, and copy them down so that you have a version to read at any time. The rest of your crew could get the note as well when you earn one.
You could access your notes via a bookcase in the captains quarters of the ship. Collecting all of these would require scouring the entire game map, and would appeal to players who enjoy just exploring the islands.
Types of notes could be:
- letters that reveal basic tips, such as that you should always look out for ships, or that you can and should scuttle your ship
- letters that reveal advanced tips, such as docking techniques
- letters that reveal the biology and ecology of the wildlife
- concept art in the form of paintings and sketches
- posters
- sheet music for in-game songs
- myths and legends
- sketches of all the different symbols used in riddle quests
- jokes!
But I thought more and this feature could be supported by a in-game faction, like a university of scholars who are studying the natural and supernatural sciences of the sea of thieves.
Unlike other factions which hand out voyages, each time you visit them, they pay you a small fee to see each new note you've collected, only like 25 gold per note, but you could make serious money if you'd been collecting notes seriously.
And just like the other factions, progressing with them unlocks titles and exclusive items. Maybe items that make you look more like a deranged naturalist.
Unlike the other factions I suppose there's a limit to how far you can progress with them, as there's only so many finite notes to collect. But this level cap of sorts could be increased regularly via the addition of new little notes.
Thoughts?
