Sounds Of The Seas: Shanties

  • Following on from my last post, I wanted to talk about shanties and where I think they may be going in the future!

    The Tavern
The tavern was home to quite a lot of shanties that weren’t playable on the ship - Including such songs as Happy Birthday!
As to whether or not this could be added to the playable songs playlist, I’m not sure. I’d love to see this song become playable by player instruments!

    Instruments
Here’s the elephant in the room - INSTRUMENTS! So, let’s get right in to it.

So far we have two instruments in Sea Of Thieves, the Hurdy-Gurdy and the Concertina. And, one thing that not many people know, we have another confirmed instrument available on release day; Behold, The Fiddle! alt text

As for my ideas on potential future instruments, here’s where it gets interesting.

Check out the first 5 seconds of this video - (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkWtwgDt64Y&t=4s)

The piece 'Bosun Bill' plays for the first 5 seconds and you can hear the two instruments we're familiar with in the game - Hurdy-Gurdy and Concertina - However I was caught by the sound of a more prominent bassline than in game so there's always a possibility of a bass-instrument. The bassline was accompanied by a drum/tambourine, which is extremely noticeable in the beginning drum roll.

I wasn’t 100% sold on this until I heard another familiar shanty played with the exact same instruments added - Have a listen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d2ZBfyzWCQ&list=PL51podOC3ZN3s0tzt0YdyFRlbmxgaiGsM) It consists of a Double-Bass, Tambourine, Hurdy-Gurdy and Concertina.

The other thing I found that strengthened my ideas was this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp6i3kKja6U)

Take notice of the instrumentation - I’ll save you some time - Fiddle (Confirmed for release), Concertina (An accordion took it’s place but it’s the same sound), Double-Bass (as suspected) and a Tambourine (Also as suspected). You may think this has no correlation because of the lack of a Hurdy-Gurdy however I can probably explain why they’re not using one - the model used in Sea of Thieves costs close to $4,000 (trust me, I tried to buy one).

Also, you may be saying “You forgot about the guitar!” but there’s a reason for this. That’s my next topic.

The guitar - I don’t want to get my hopes up for a Guitar/Lute because I’ve only seen evidence once, and that’s in the live performance video.
I have, however, seen a Lute in-game… alt text

I won’t speculate on the guitar/lute any more as I simply don’t have enough evidence until I hear a guitar/lute in an official recording.

Now, to the instrument everyone cares about….

    Singing

Vocals! We all want to sing shanties aboard ship!

We only have one official recording from the OST that has vocals - Video Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMb3CHqD9UM&index=2&list=PLfI71-gRbCrikniN38b_oRFggefXQnDqT) Unfortunately this doesn’t sound like it’s recorded to be a shanty.

The only other piece of evidence we have is the Live Performance Video From Earlier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp6i3kKja6U)
I personally would love to hear some singable shanties come to the game in the future! Maybe you hold LT whilst playing your instruments?

I also noticed NPCs around the outposts humming shanties! And I think it’d be cool if players would randomly hum a tune to themselves, just to add some extra life to the game!

That’s all I have on shanties for now, let me know your thoughts! Which instruments would you love to bring aboard for your trips across the seas?

    See you on the seas,
    Captain LimpLegLenny

  • You can see some instruments in this T-shirt

I don't know if it means something, but I hope so :)

  • pirate bard approves, have my upvote :D

  • @sashlyr You weren't kidding! A lute and Fiddle, that's a very interesting thing to see.

It means that Rare see it as a fitting instrument for the Sea of Thieves world, so we'll see what happens!

  • No really, can’t wait to see what’s coming for shanties and music.

Ps: was looking for a list of instruments used in the GAoP, but without success. Any ideas of all instruments? Did they have flute, lute, cello, banjo or guitar?
I always thought they had mandolin, but seen it appeared much later lol.

  • @nic727 Sorry if I sound stupid but I've completely blanked as to what GAoP is?

I'd be able to figure out the instrumentation!

  • What about a pipe organ? id love to see that.

  • @limpleglenny Nicely researched. Looking forward to the fiddle :D

    Golden Age of Piracy. ;)

  • I'm skeptical of the Fiddle being a real thing.

It's never been seen before and even the thing that can't be talked about here but happens every time the beta client gets updated, has found zero mention of a fiddle.

Until they talk about it officially being in the game I'm going to have to put it in the speculated column.

But there is one at the beginning of this video...

  • @sashlyr I must be blind as I didn't see it. And I'm still going to stand on the side of it being unsure since this was almost 2 years ago.

We've also seen art for rowboats and many other things that we've never officially had word about either so again, going to stay on the side of maybe but maybe not when it comes to the Fiddle.

  • @the-lion-turtle Yeah, 100% understand your skepticism! I guess we won't know until release!

  • I believe that all our speculations are a definite maybe...yo ho, me heartie!

  • @LimpLegLenny Personally I'd love to sea (get it) the penny whistle or flute somewhere down the line. both wind instruments would fit the pirate theme and sound great accompanying what's currently available.

  • @who-da-camper I would also love to SEA such a thing!

  • I want to quickly drop an interesting thing I noticed!

    Behold, a banjo! alt text

  • @limpleglenny I saw an article by a European gaming site say that a drum will be available after launch.

  • There better be a banjo and a kazoo accepting one of their series of games were called Banjo-Kazooie.

  • @racmop

This has truly truly made my day!! Thanks for the share!!

  • @who-da-camper If they add a Drum/Tambourine my predicitions will have been 100% correct!

  • Another interesting thing dropped by Rare today! In the Achievement Art you can see a guitar! CLICK HERE TO VIEW

I posted a picture of a banjo above, but this is definitely a different instrument. What are your thoughts?

Look at the back left character!

  • I rest my case.

    alt text

  • @limpleglenny My thoughts exactly!

I also would like to see a system where you can find new types of shanties in the game itself trough for example similar to the "mail-in-bottle" system, where you find random bottles with quests in the game.

The developers can change the color of the bottle and when you pick it up You'll get a new shanty to play!

To add to this it would be cool to see when you friends don't have the shanty you are playing it will make them play as if their character is drunk.

You'll find me on the high seas,
    Captain FiddleMyDutcher

  • @fiddlemydutcher actually you can find books which are lore or shanties, but at this time it’s doing nothing. I hope in the future we will be able to play shanties as soundtrack in the game when sailing (like AC Black Flag) and get a lore section in the menu with informations about islands and inhabitants.

  • @nic727 I can not agree more. To be honest that's the main reason why i enjoyed so much in "AC: Black Flag" and I really hope they'll introduce the very same feature in sea of thieves because I miss sea shanties as a soundtrack or something similar that will turn off if I leave the ship or I start combat...
