Spawned in on an island in a storm, heard some loud crack and got knocked back. Is getting hit by lightning a thing? It scared the c**p out of me and I started looking for a sniper.

Yes you can be struck by lightning at any time provided there is nothing between you and the sky. It will also strike your ship causing damage if it does. Also if you're interacting with something, like the sails or wheel on the ship, it will knock you off and backwards away from the thing you were on.
@sandman929 Definitely a thing; I'm up in the crow's next about 90% of the time I'm playing and I feel the wrath of Zeus constantly, it's like he has a personal vendetta against me.
