Character skills and specialization

  • Hi, i think characters should have skills to develop.
For example a pirate that uses more melee weapons is going to master that skill and do more damage or quicker attacks/parry, same with other weapons.

Inside a crew there will be defined roles and tasks.. if the skipper gains ability of ship "agility" or quicker anchor pull, the cabin boy gains quicker repair or increased water pulled out below deck, others quicker cannon reload, stuff like that.
"I had only one captain in my life"

That will grant more consistency to the game.

  • I doubt we'll see any of that. Rare have stated that they don't want to put players into any specific role, rather they want to allow any member of a crew to be able to perform any task at any time and be just as able as anyone else.

And the same goes for combat. Giving players a vertical skill tree where they get better at certain things would give some players (especially experienced ones) a big advantage over others in combat, which goes against the horizontal progression they have planned for the game.

  • @Ever-Reddy You are right but it depends on how big is the gap between have or not certain skills.

Real life isn't that fair ;D

  • @o-argonauta-o It's been confirmed several times that there will be no skills to level, no defined/set roles for players, or classes of any sort.

Rare wants everything to be based on a players own actual skill, and freedom of choice.

  • As others have mentioned, Rare has stated there will be no skills/leveling, the only progression being reputation.

Rare wants this to be a true sandbox game, where everyone is equal. I love this; it eliminates my issue with RPG's, people just grinding for gear and stats and forgetting the point of the game: to have fun.

But I also understand where you're coming from: I love RPGs and leveling up in games--and I mean just the leveling. For me, the journey is the reward, once I'm done, I work on another character (I'm an alt-junky in said games). None of this is present in Sea of Thieves...and I'm OK with this.
