Which idea drew you to Sea of Thieves?

  • I very much remember first hearing of this game, and all the things you could do in the game. A game where you could build your own legend, and where various players already had. I loved it, every aspect of it. But, I very vividly remember the first time seeing musical instruments being part of the game. It was then that I realized that in this game I could, if I wanted to, sail around and play music for random pirates. It was that freedom to do something like that that drew me to the game. It's something I did as the Technical Alpha ended, I played christmas music over my microphone & played in-game music for players as I gave them treasure. It's something I'll probably always keep doing, I love the in-game music and I love this game.

Anyway, that's not the point of this thread. I'm curious about ideas. After learning of Sea of Thieves and all it's features; which idea drew you to the game, and what was the first idea that you wanted to try in the game ? Feel free to elaborate! (as I clearly did)

  • Honestly when i saw the trailer it was the pirate aspect of it all.

I have always been fond of pirate games but none have made me feel complete, always lacking. I seen the trailer with the combat, digging, shooting out for PvP and thought hmm something different we can man ships, be in crews. I wanna try this.

Though I wont lie with the end of the trailer I screamed at the shark. And @captain-scourge @DrBullhammer @Drachmul I scream like a little .... When I get bit. Haha

After testing this it has stolen my heart for gaming . I could sail for hours as it alone is so serene and beautiful I couldn't get enough. I can't wait for more!

  • @erinom3 I wanted to fill my ship with gold and just cruise around known as the most powerful (and wealthy) Pirate Lord!

Now I just hope they actually do have a rank system for 9 players to be the PIRATE LORDS! Though I just want people to have heard of me...

  • To be honest, the art style drew me into the game when I first saw screenshots and footage of it.

The water is the best digital water I’ve ever seen 👍🍻

  • @erinom3 I honestly loved the sailing your ship, and being a pirate. And neither of those things let me down in the alpha. I loved learning how to sail, the first time my friend and I got on our ship - with no knowledge of how anything worked - was pretty much a 30 minute death by laughter as our boat floated out into the ocean away from the dock and we flailed to figure it out.

And now that I know how to sail, I 100% absolute love it. I actually had fun occasionally just sailing out in the ocean, not looking for treasure or glory, but just to take in that ocean and peace - though it doesn't hurt that the game is stunningly beautiful. There was something absolutely calming about it, so long as I didn't accidentally sail into a storm.

And the being giving a map with an X and having to find that island, and then location was so much fun. And made me feel so pirate-y.

I'm sad I have to wait to play it again. Coming home from a long day of work and being able to log on, and treasure hunt with friends made a great end of the day, and has been something I looked forward to during my ability to play it.

  • I think the ship battles really drew me into the game, plus I reeeeaaly liked the art style!

  • The idea it's an open world with pirates in it and all the potential ideas that could come alive, i'll be honest the recent video rare put up about capturing animals and taking care of them made me want the game more...it's like a little bit of pokemon with rare amazing creature design....basically i want to capture every animal and maybe breed them for rare more exotic ones sort of like ARK does.

  • When Mike Chapman said we are making a game if you are fan of Goonies and monkey island.

  • @erinom3 The first thing which drew me towards the game was one of the E3 trailers, 2016 maybe?

I loved how they done the video with the face cams and it basically sold the game for me there, that and the fact you had a Ship which required multiple people to sail rather then just one person.

And lets not forget the fact you could steal other peoples teasure, i dont care if people dont admit it i know 90% where intrigued by that aha!

  • It was I think a year ago when I saw one of the first trailers, there wasn't much in the way of information about SOT at the time but it had me interested. What I yearned for was the sailing aspect and the adventure and freedom that the game seemed to offer me. I thought the visual aspect of the sea and was stunning. I did plan on buying Forza 7 for Christmas but instead I'll leave it til my birthday now, that's how much I want this game.

  • Which Idea? English much?

  • The open world/seas aspect of it. This game seems like it could have been truly something amazing. but they are going to simple with it. seems like the entire game is litteraly finding treasure chests whether it be from Maps, or puzzles/riddles and delivering caged animals. They should have designed it into a procedural MMO and gave us a lot more to do.

  • @drbullhammer lets leave the scary fort out of this!

  • Well ""What Drew Me Into Sea of Thieves" Was that i like pirates i liked the art style And Pirate FPS/MMO/RPGs arent exactly an over saturated market.

  • @lt-weulf Elaborate

  • @erinom3 Well I heard about it at the first E3 it was announced at. When the trailer came up I had already known a bit about it (Pirate game made by Rare), but the trailer showed adventure: first-person, action-packed adventure! I thought it was finally the game to fill the void PotCO and Puzzle Pirates left - the pirate inside of me ached to play instantly! I first wanted to just get on my boat and start building my treasure. I'm also a sucker for cosmetics and role playing like I did in the previous games mentioned, so I had hoped for that the whole while. :)

  • The team aspect immediately grabbed my attention. When I saw a small clip with a galleon--several people managing the sails, cannons, etc.--that's the exact moment the stars bloomed in my eyes.

  • The idea of an actually good multiplayer pirate game because i've been disappointed many many times.

    Enjoyed the Alpha a lot.

  • To be honest, when I first saw for this game I thought it was really childish and wasn't interested at all, but I came across one of the Sea of Thieves older trailers and thought, "Hey this might actually be fun!" Once I did my research I fell in love with the game.
Just in case your curious I was searching pirate games because I was playing Assasin's Creed: Black Flag

  • @erinom3 I was initially drawn to Sea of Thieves by its simple concept of allowing players to be a single pirate, on a single ship, working with others as a crew. Although, recently, I hadn't realized my true feelings for this game until my wife was able to play with me on a small sloop.

Initially I was excited to sail a big galleon with all of my friends, which was fun and all; during the alpha we were able to coordinate and gather treasure quickly -- but it became tiring and I wanted to stop worrying about being 100% efficient. When I'm in a crew on a galleon I get stressed out and become anxious and it really bothers me. I don't like feeling like we're "falling behind" because the sails are backwards or the anchor gets dropped prematurely.

Then I played with my wife on a small boat and the experience became much more intimate. We were able to take our time, explore every nook and cranny, and just enjoy the world for all of its sights and sounds! We weren't stressed out and we had a lot of fun! We even crossed paths with other ships and either outran them, fought them, or boarded them by surprise! After three solid nights of playing with my wife I immediately realized that this was the experience I wanted. Shortly thereafter I pre-ordered two copies of the game.

I couldn't thank Rare for a more warm and welcoming game in this "sea of a games" that appear to follow a single formula. I'm sick of the games with endless treadmills, twitch-based shooters, the bread crumb trails or games that even play themselves. Sea of Thieves breaks the mold in every single way and I'm very excited for its release!

  • @Erinom3 Waaaay back in the mists of time (or so it feels) when I first watched a trailer showing these scallywags running around an island, then onto the beach with the Galleon anchored waiting for them. The art style kept me watching til the end but it was the ship that 'Hooked' me.

I just said to myself. " Finally. I just want to sail those amazing looking waters on a ship like that".

After that, it was just meant to be.

  • What drew me in was the trailer for E3 this year. It looked like a cool game and the fact that i could sail a ship together with my friends who i don't live near made it even better. The idea of sailing, exploring and sea battles is just so awesome.

  • @drbullhammer Yeah man had a blast 😁

  • And as far as the OP goes ever since I heard rumors about this game I was already getting hyped for it then I saw the first trailer for it and it was love at first sight and after playing almost a sold year of this game I can not wait for release thanks to all the people who let me sink their ships and to the two crews that actually sunk me well played out of this year I was sunk 3 times twice to @DrBullhammer and his crew see y'all at launch

    As always

    See ya on the Seas!!

This is a brilliant idea and great for getting to know the community :)

So. A good few years ago when my apprentice pirates were small, we were watching Pirates of the Caribbean and they were searching high and low for a pirate game they could play. They found Pirates of the Caribbean Online... and I did too.

Already being a pirate, the salt sea and adventures on the waves being in me blood, so to speak, it was a perfect game. I played it for a good few years, met hundreds of great friends, became part of the community there. Then Disney closed it down with little warning. We were devastated.. I was heartbroken.

The year after, while we were all searching for another great pirate game to become involved in, or another world where we could still play with our fellow pirates, I saw a trailer for Sea of Thieves... a brief snippet... a hint of what was to come. I scoured the internet for information, but found little.

Time went on and little by little more information came out, in the meantime no other game scratched that pirate itch.... Blackwake, Archeage, Black Desert.. none of them had that same feeling as PotCO had done - yet a group of determined fans sought to recreate PotCO for us in the meantime under the name The Legend of Pirates Online.

Then in early 2016 I found a reddit had been created... then the forums and here we are.

The things which most attracted me were the possibility to once again sail the pirate seas with a crew o' mates, in a world dedicated to pirates and piracy. When I saw those ships... that was it, and that water!! The whole art style and the more I read about Rare as a company... the better I felt.. the more excited I became.

Time has passed and I'm as excited to sail these seas with this wonderful community as I was when I first discovered Sea of Thieves.
