Idea for inter-ship alliance comms

  • One of the tough parts about being in a coordinated alliance, is only being able to communicate by getting into short range and shouting through a megaphone. I had an idea for a couple ways an alliance could send out even limited comms to other ships in on the team.

idea 1. A Ouija board / Crystal ball system. A Ouija board that allows a player to send out a single word or maybe 10-20 characters out to the alliance. The words could appear on the screen of alliance players much like the ghostly words of some quests emblaze our screens for a moment then disappear. To avoid this being too overpowered, the receiver on the ships could be a crystal ball. So only players within range of the crystal ball on their ship would get the message. A player on an island out of voice range of their ship/crystal ball, might miss the message. The Ouija boards and crystal balls could be a gold sink, so either something like trinkets that need to be purchased and placed on a ship to use, or something like supplies that need to be repurchased every game, if you happen to be doing alliance work.

idea 2. An owl, crow, carrier pigeon, or seabird system. Similarly to the last idea, the message length would be limited. But instead of instant message transmission, there could be a range based delay for the time it takes the messenger bird to fly between ships. This could also be designed so that players would have to physically check the bird cages to see if a message came in. This would allow for inter-ship comms, yet still allow for the chance of not noticing you have an owl waiting. And perhaps the messenger birds could be shot out of the sky by other players, dropping the message in the water for any to read.

Increasing the number of positive player interactions might help cultivate a slightly less toxic community. Also, adding inter-ship communication for alliances, opens the door to more coordinated alliance based questing and events.

  • If you're asking for a way to communicate short range, you can just turn the speaking trumpet around to "whisper." Also, a crystal ball displaying text is not a good idea. It would obstruct the screen, it will cause troll messages (I won't get into details), and it could last for a crazy amount of time. The bird mechanic sounds amazing though. It feels sea of thieves-y in a way. One suggestion, why can't the bird be not just between your alliance, but with all players. Say you send a message to another crew to join an alliance.

    Xbox party, Steam chat, Discord
Many ways to send invites and not worry or need ingame stuff

Plus if you betray…you don’t have to leave the party or worry about secrets being spoken. A lot of work

  • @tristan8674 Im talking about long range comms, not short range. And words already appear on your screen as ghostly messages in quests and when servers merge. If you didnt already know that, that's how much it obstructed your view. As for "troll messages" this could be easily dealt with by adding a message cooldown timer on the Ouija board, by muting the annoying player, or of course by leaving the alliance with the trolls in it.

I sort of like the idea of being able to send out a call to alliance to non allied ships, but these ideas of inter-ship comms was more between ships that already consented to work together. It would ease the number of complaints from unsolicited communications.

  • @captain-pwnsy Oh... ok, i get it now.

The bird message idea is a great idea.

This makes alliances more accessible to players in game without the need of third party chat systems, which is also great.

  • Heard the idea of messanger birds before, the crystal ball is definitely good within world as well! I think the core of alliance messaging long range not being over powered is definitely to have a limited amount of communication with it, probably a context radial with the island/marker you are nearest to being the other menu options so like "enemy on sharkbait cove!/treasure at north star sea post!" and "take the treasure/were on thin ice!" type messages for first/second menu radial messages, and maby a time delay depending on range of the ship you are messaging.

I really like the idea of full communication, but it could become too over powered in this game im sure considering alliances already at times. A good balance of limitations and useful context would make it great and make me consider alliancing a bit more.
