Arena needs to come back.

  • I’ve been playing Sea of Thieves for a long time, and at this point it’s honestly frustrating how there is still no real replacement for Arena. I understand why it was removed from a development standpoint, but from a player experience standpoint, its absence is still very noticeable, especially for anyone who actually enjoys consistent PvP.

Arena filled a role in the game that nothing else has been able to replicate. It provided immediate, structured, and repeatable PvP without the time investment required in Adventure. You could log on, get into a match within minutes, and be in the middle of multi-ship combat almost instantly. That kind of accessibility is completely missing now. Every current alternative requires significantly more setup, travel time, or commitment before you even reach meaningful combat.

The biggest issue is not just that Arena is gone, but that the design space it occupied has been left largely unaddressed. Hourglass PvP focuses on isolated 1v1 encounters, which removes the chaotic, multi-crew dynamics that made Arena so engaging. Adventure PvP, on the other hand, is inconsistent and often requires long periods of sailing with no guarantee of action. These systems serve different purposes, but neither replaces what Arena actually provided.

Modes like Last Ship Standing show that there is still an interest in creating more direct PvP experiences, but they feel limited and temporary rather than foundational. Because they rotate and change, they don’t offer the same reliability or identity that Arena had. Arena wasn’t just a mode, it was a consistent environment players could return to whenever they wanted fast-paced combat.

Another important point is that Arena supported a different type of player. Not everyone wants long-form sessions every time they play. Some players want shorter, skill-focused matches where the objective is clear and the action is immediate. Right now, those players are effectively underserved. The game heavily favors extended Adventure sessions, which creates a gap in the overall experience.

At this point, the conversation should not just be about bringing Arena back exactly as it was, but about recognizing that the game still lacks a permanent, structured PvP mode that prioritizes accessibility and consistent engagement. Whether that comes in the form of a reworked Arena, a smaller-scale playlist, or a permanent version of something like Last Ship Standing, there is clearly room for it in the game’s ecosystem.

If the goal is to keep players engaged long-term, then providing different ways to experience the game is essential. Right now, one of the most unique and valuable PvP experiences Sea of Thieves ever had is simply gone, and nothing has fully stepped in to take its place. That is something worth revisiting, not just for nostalgia, but for the overall health and balance of the game moving forward.
