Larinna: a Tragic NPC Story

  • Originally, Larinna sold maps to Ashen chests for 10 (?) doubloons, and Ashen keys for 99 doubloons. She could also give you faction boosts for gold, and gold boosts for doubloons. She was useful, and kinda funny, munching on mangos and constantly complaining about needing to get hammered on grog.
She had a point, and was useful. Yeah, she still mango-munches and complains, but...nothing else, really.
Now, she just kinda...does nothing. She waits outside taverns for....something. She used to give maps to keys, now there's Ashen Guardians. Or the keys just spawn on ships or whatever. As for doubloons, they're being phased out as currency soon. So, what of poor ol' Larinna? Does she just stand around to remind you that the Bilge Rats were a thing back in Season 5 or something?

What happened to Larinna, or better yet, what SHOULD happen to her?

  • Dubloons are not being phased out. They are going to become a seasonal currency as they were always meant to be, current dubloons will be converted to gold at Larinnas current Dubloon to gold rate.

  • Larinna could have more to offer though. I thought she would be tied to the Black Market in future updates.

  • She could also give you faction boosts for gold, and gold boosts for doubloons.

    Still does.

As for doubloons, they're being phased out as currency soon.

Not being phased out, just Reset. She may also be the Shop owner when it Opens.

  • She's a bit of a weird character, as her presence currently doesn't make sense. It'd be better if you could, I don't know, bribe her into giving you information about the current state of SoT, like which Ancient Meg is currently on the map, how many ships are around, if there's going to be a server merge soon, etc. Instead, this is her official patch history (look at how many are dialogue) :

Introduced, replacing Duke as the representative for the Bilge Rats.

IDEALLY, if the Bilge Rats came out of nowhere and tried to strike down both the PL and Flameheart while they're still licking their wounds from the Season 19 War Effort, that'd be cool. It'd flip things completely on its head and give you a reason to pay attention to them. Give out a Larinna costume for level 100 Rep in Season 20 for helping Larinna take both of these goofs down. The problem is that Rare likes safe, predictable stories and features.

  • Ah yes finally Larinia reveals herself to be The Captain all along!

  • Larinna currently actually tells you a bit of lore about the current season (or rather, a summary for those that aren't up to date through other channels).

I also think Larinna should go back to verbally call out to your pirate whenever there's an Act 2 event (or other, longer events like Christmas festivities) and then have some short lines about it. I know there's the event tab and pop-ups, but as a completely new player in late 2022, Larinna's voice actually helped me figure out there was an Adventure going on!

  • @drbensei

But not as loud please. xD

  • @shenlongkazama I think the loudness she had during the last few adventures in 2023 was fine, imo. Where she was almost whispering, haha

  • @drbensei

Her volume was over the top before they lowered it. xD

  • I remember, lol. But as a swabbie, it did help me realize someone's there after like 5 starts xD

But as said, I think the later volume is enough.

That's what I'm saying; for a small fee, she should let you in on important info. They should have her as one of the people who updates you on the Season 19 Act 1 War Effort state. Having to go see Flameheart or the PL just for that seems...excessive.

Like, does Rare have a Department of Cloud Messages?
