Why is it that whenever I harpoon a ship my annoying mermaid spawns and blocks me while going to enemy ship? I don’t remember it doing that in the past.

Someone else mentioned it here recently, you’re not alone. I don’t grapple much so I haven’t had many opportunities to experience it myself.
There is multiple issues with it. One is that when you grapple, you go in a straight line. The mermaid can spawn AFTER you grapple, so once you start moving towards the boat it might spawn directly in front of you and then break your line, causing you to lose your grapple, through no fault of your own. The reason why merfruit is not an answer is because often times in Hourglass if I have hit my opponents ship multiple times and they have more pressure than me, I will shoot myself quickly towards them and use the grapple to get the rest of the way, then sword them until their boat sinks. If I miss my shot or the game decides that I didn't actually press F to get on the ladder despite me pressing it 20 times (I know I didn't get on and off the ladder because the grapple reload animation was not interrupted), not being able to merm would essentially just be me forcing myself to lose or I would have to swim manually back to my boat and hope I can catch it. It's monumentally annoying to have the mermaids ruin your board attempt through no fault of your own. I have played 1000+ HG matches and there has been matches where it happened 3 times in a row. It has caused me to ragequit hourglass for the day, because I keep getting forced by the game to not be allowed to play.
