Safer Seas: Anyone Else Enjoys It?~

  • Ok'y, I am asking this because strangely enough, I begin to just enjoy playing on Safer Seas a lot despite how much I really don't need to. Like, I've been playing the game very on/off since December 2019, and am generally good at PvP in most titles (even an ex-pro & ex-grandmaster player from some games)... But despite how much I don't need to, I just enjoy the calmness of being the only ship on a server. Just me, by myself or with friends. No worries of anything. Like sure, good PvP is also pretty fun and relaxing to me in Sea of Thieves, but many of my PvP fights tend to boil down to me sinking the enemy ship in a few minutes and then I get called slurs... or I run into kids, which makes me uncomfortable cuz I am in my 30s... I don't want to be bothered by people whom I am twice or even thrice the age of. Also, just classic online toxicity that you see in any game no matter if there's PvP or not.

Don't get me wrong, most crews are honestly pretty chill or at least just run away from me (I am a chill ship myself. I won't bother other crews usually but won't run away. I'm the type of guy who will park next to another ship at an Outpost without a care and still sell my loot despite potentially being under threat of losing some of it). So, like I don't always have issues but the times I do run into toxicity or players I don't want to interact with... It can just ruin the mood.

So, I've been just enjoying the calmness and honestly... I just love how relaxing Sea of Thieves is with only just oneself. It's an insanely chill game, in a good way. Sure, there's a few things I wish were added into the Safer Seas, but overall I agree with Rare's vision for the game and why Safer Seas should stay the way it is (plus really, I just miss having my own custom ship and my additional cosmetics really)... But yeah...

Anyways, anyone else like this, or am I crazy for essentially playing like this?

After a month of it. I got bored of it. So lonely and not very fun when everything is easy, unproductive and just flat….bored I go back to high seas.

Players complain about the seas being “empty” :p

I’ve never played safer seas. I don’t put any energy into talking bad about it, but since you asked - safer seas is the opposite experience I’m looking for with sot. Even as a new player I loved the danger and necessity to be vigilant. That to me is what makes the game fun. Acquiring loot without any risk basically equates to left clicking easy npc’s without any chance of excitement from my perspective. The game is built around interaction with other players. Even when I eventually finish the shores of gold curse (I’m half way there) I won’t be doing it on SS.

I feel like the game overall is generally pretty easy, especially more so for PvE but even PvP can sometimes be just not an issue? But yeah, I do agree that PvP is still the obvious harder element of the game. I'm just a bit more retired from PvP than for it now-a-days that I just want to relax.

  • I love it because I can enjoy the game world without randos screaming obscenities at me, mocking my voice, or blasting ear-shattering volumes of music over their microphones.

I still remember one encounter where I was fishing, because I felt like fishing. I was solo. I was at a seapost.
    A 4-man crew rolls up.

    • Player 1: Any good fish?
    • Me: Nah. I'm just catching them and selling them right away. Felt like fishing.
    • Player 2 Jumps on my boat: No one is here! (It is here that I realize he's around 12 years old)
    • Me: Yep. Playing solo.
    • Player 2 begins throwing firebombs while screeching (I can only describe the octave this 12-year-old kid had hit as 'screeching'): I'M SINKING HIS SHIP! I HAVE HIS SHIP! I SET IT ON FIRE!
    • I continue to fish, because I honestly don't care.
    • Player 3 starts firing cannons at my ship. Ok. Sure. I guess he gets 'excited' from attacking people not fighting back.
    • Player 4 walks over.
    • Player 1 & 4 wait until I have a fish on the line. AND THEN shoot me. Just to be as spiteful as possible.
    • Player 1 (In a mocking voice): You may want to get some friends or not play.

These are the kind of encounters the 'Anti-Safer Seas' crew defend; People being massive jerks.
And yet letting SS players play SS without absurdly low level caps or giving them Captaincy would somehow ruin the game for everyone else.
Because the victimizers want easy victims, not equal fights.

Safer Seas is a great option to have. People seem to treat it like a binary choice; you either play High Seas or Safer Seas and whichever one you play means you must hate the other.

Safer Seas is just another tool in the game. Sometimes I want to play around with other pirates and sometimes I just wanna chill on my ship and drift where the tides take me.

Neither is right or wrong or inherently better. It's all down to what YOU feel like doing. I enjoy loading up on cooked trophy fish, fire/blunderbombs, and what not, killing myself, and then spending an hour or two on the Ferry playing music with passing pirates and handing out gifts.

Others would find this boring, but we can both play the game in the way that amuses us. As long as your not hurting anyone, never let others' opinions and prejudices affect how you enjoy the game.
