Open crew problem and solution

  • Open crew is currently the most annoying feature in my opinion due to getting stuck with crew members that don't share the same mindset. We're forced to deal with it and sometimes bullying starts to take place

Solution: add a new ability to join without a crew or ship. This would allow people to pick a crew to join rather than force them to be on crew. To avoid Everyone killing each other. The same crew noncollision peek would be applied. Crewless pirates also are given the ability to rent a rowboat or ship.
This would also make outposts much more lively. Outposts would work like lobbies. However to avoid abuse of system Crews cannot harm the crewless and vice versa (wip idea suggestions to balance this recommended).

Add the ability for captains to invite crewless pirates to their crew using an emote similar to guild emote invite. This gives captaincy a purpose instead of cosmetic. Imagine being a captain walking into a tavern to find who u want on your crew. There would also be the ability to remove crew members from your ship, but not the server. Removed crew members would be marooned on a random island With a possibility of it being an outpost.

  • It's an interesting idea, I don't think outposts are ever busy enough for this to work very well. And the current system is it specifically avoids you spawning near other crews so this would be quite an overhaul.

  • This actually has some similarities to an idea I had for open crew matchmaking. Essentially, open crew players could have the option to enter a lobby area where they can interact and chat with other players, similar to the Sea Dog's Tavern when Arena was a thing. They could even bring that back to act as the hub for this mod or making an entirely new location: I was thinking maybe 'The Unfired Pistol', the tavern built by Ramsey outside of the Sea of Thieves and mentioned in the SOT comic book, plus it has a lore reason for why no one can hurt anyone in this space, the cursed pistol that prevents any gun from being fired. I don't know, just thought this was an interesting idea and thought I'd add my own input.

  • Ideas change.
Just because I join a crew to do only Athena doesn’t mean will change our minds and start fishing.

    Be more flexible

  • Your idea of finding like-minded crews to join technically already exists in the SoT community discord.

Wait, "rent a rowboat or ship"? Why bother renting a ship when the game already gives you one for free as default?

If I'm a solo about to sell my loot, please believe me when I say I don't want Outposts more lively with players hanging out just looking to board my ship and sell my loot.

"Add the ability for captains to invite crewless pirates to their crew..." already exists via the SoT community discord, where you can have clear communication with people on the ship in a call with them.

"There would also be the ability to remove crew members from your ship..." yeah because that certainly won't get abused right? "Thanks for helping out! See ya!" :)

  • @europa4033 "Already exists in SoT community discord" this and "Already exists in SoT community discord" that. What's the point of mentioning SoT community discord, when we're talking about improving open crew who might not even use SoT community discord? Besides, I don't think SoT community discord is THAT great when it comes to finding like minded pirates nowadays.

I hate to break it to you, but anytime you have open crew, anything can, will, and does happen. There's frankly no guarantee and so you have to proceed with caution. This idea of meeting someone's character first as they're standing around an outpost, isn't going to guarantee or promise a successful voyage/whatever.

If I'm looking to do LotV, I can hop on a free ship myself and announce what I'm forming on discord to form a crew that's also interested,-----or----- have the developers spend a ton of time, money, and resources into developing a way to log into the game without a crew or ship, just to stand around an outpost (hopefully no one is trying to sell there) hoping a ship comes along looking for people to invite, and if they're forming something I'm not interested in, guess I have to wait in the game longer for that to happen. Oh, and even if I finally find a ship that'll have me, they can kick me off at anytime back at an outpost. Yeah I'm sure many won't see a problem with this.

  • @europa4033 Fair points, mate. Honestly, I think this idea would work better if this 'hub' was in it's own separate space outside of adventure, like the Sea Dog's Tavern in Arena. This would also solve the problem of servers becoming empty because of crews spawning into a server only to dive once they're stocked up on supplies, they could vote at this hub and then sail out to dive. But I don't think Rare will be interested in bring that back, let alone create separate servers just to allow people to matchmaking in-game, they can hardly implement new features without issues.

  • @burnbacon that's the primary focus of this idea flexibility there are more opportunities through the idea I came up with and then the current of course some things could use adjustments but that's what trial and error is for isn't it

Why should I download discord just to find a decent crew why can't I find one in the game

Wait, "rent a rowboat or ship"? Why bother renting a ship when the game already gives you one for free as default?

Okay the renting part is more focused towards the rowboat

If I'm a solo about to sell my loot, please believe me when I say I don't want Outposts more lively with players hanging out just looking to board my ship and sell my loot.

So you'd rather have pirates be nice to you

"Add the ability for captains to invite crewless pirates to their crew..." already exists via the SoT community discord, where you can have clear communication with people on the ship in a call with them.

Again discord why should I have to download that why can't I just go up to another player and offer them a spot on my crew as a captain

"There would also be the ability to remove crew members from your ship..." yeah because that certainly won't get abused right? "Thanks for helping out! See ya!" :)
So you'd rather have a menace benefit from all your hard work while they are not even helping. Or would you rather remove that crew member

I tried to think of a majority of the community rather than just myself

  • @magolor101 safe havens aren't exactly the best idea because those will be abused to a higher degree the seas are meant to be dangerous are they not

  • I would not want to have to convince others why I may be a good choice for someone’s crew. just throw me in an open slot.

There will always be someone who is passed over or waiting forever to be picked.

  • @renee-le-mom true which is why the option to request a ship or rent a rowboat from shipwright would be available

  • @acnologia1403

Like chartering a ship works now?

Edited to add: I mean selecting open crew

  • @renee-le-mom i prefer freedom how one joins the seas grant multiple options to satisfy the majority instead of just the whiny side

  • Everytime I join a server it's always people leaving to find another crew or children that talk too much or crews that just running around doing nothing with one crew member asking to do something

  • @acnologia1403

What happens when you select a crew for a galleon from the tavern, and later your crew leaves the game?

  • Crewless becomes the new tdm and troll preference.

You can use xbox lfg and don't have to download discord

  • So the toxicity of the Arena tavern would now be found on outposts at spawn ?

They cannot be harmed by people from crews ? Great, so they hang around an outpost, hide and are able to steal from you and you don't have a defense other than sail to another outpost and hope there aren't any crewless pirates hanging out & hiding.

People are waiting for joining another crew and are able to start a new crew ... what if the server is full already or the server you're on isn't able to support the size of the crew ?

People who prefer to sail alone or are waiting for their friends will now have the company of crewless pirates - I doubt they will enjoy that.

Also, good luck finding supplies at an outpost when several crewless pirates have been going through the barrels. already.

  • @renee-le-mom turn on current open crew and wait like we do now

  • @lem0n-curry Would you rather crewless pirates be killed through all means. Other than that sounds like a typical pirate tavern. I guess they could make it like safer seas. But instead it would be called survival seas for those that want a challenge. I'll make another post suggesting this idea.

That was not my intent at all - I was pointing out flaws to the ideas you posted, not making it viable at all IMHO, I think your proposal will make sailing with open crews worse and also create issues with non-open crews as they would be confronted with crewless pirates as well.
