throughout my time in playing Sea of Thieves( 2+years)
I always assumed that it progressed from grade one to grade 5. But as I was looking at the regal Fortune weapon set I thought it said it required grade 4 but when I looked again it was actually grade 6? Keep in mind that the grades are in Roman numerals so grade 4 is IV And a six would be VI. I have never seen a grade 6 progression on a commendation before. Is there others like this or is this new? If it’s new It would have been nice if Rare addressed it to before I had to go raise a support ticket about it.
Progressive commendations question
First time I that I can remember it being done.
I wish they didn't. Either create a new item/set or just incentivize other events like siren song with new cosmetics.
Cofs are getting too high for people that haven't been a part of it along the way. Especially something that has been staying at 1 spot per season. Becoming less realistic for organic play for new/casual players.
We do actually have a grade 6 in one of the guild commendations, it goes to 10. But, it is a commendation completing commendation, meaning you unlock each grade by finishing off a previous commendation in the list. So not quite the same as working towards something like 180/180 chests. I suspect they will go to 10 with the CoFs commendations. Hopefully they will stop there.
Another disorientating cap is the grade 3 ones that just stop there. We have a handful of those, especially in the guilds section.
@belphegor1384 it's because they've started rotating world event that cofs can be found so they have allowed to progress further than normal comms.

^^This this this. A casual/new player currently has to turn in 180 chests. Next season (assuming they keep this up), it'll be 210, and I honestly don't see a new player bothering with that many world events at that point (whichever one it'll be). Creating a new chest with new cosmetics would be awesome.

Yeah the main 2 issues with requirements that are outside of true organic play is that it only incentivizes 1 of 2 things. Either it's so unrealistic that people never do it or give up early or it leads them to cheesing it because it's not realistic organically.
Doesn't really benefit the game if either of those happen, imo we are in that territory with cofs.
Right now it's in the fotd (second time) so that amount really just incentivizes getting involved in alliance servers as a realistic way of getting it done.
It's too rare and requires too much experience for the amount it got to.
Needs a cof voyage or to be in multiple events at some point.
@europa4033 tbf every year there is a time where the cof is in the FOTD, which makes it easy to catch up

180 cofs from stacking fotds isn't an easy catchup organically it's a full time stacking job and completely takes people out of everything else other than grinding an event for experienced players.
Barnies are everywhere, 300 just happens organically over time.
100 veils is a big grind but it's a full on adventure voyage that allows everything else along the way.
They have created a situation that is leaving out people that don't grind/farm/cheese one location all day.
180 is just successful turn ins, that doesn't take into consideration how many attempts it would take a typical sot player to get them.

With many people diving from server to server to find FotDs plus considering this is the season of the sneak, I'm not too sure how successful newer players will be, having to turn in 180 in 1 season. Yikes. My bet is frustration will happen long before they get anywhere near that 180 goal.

You get a reward for every grade though.
People who were playing already when it was introduced had a whole season to reach a grade, maybe catching up if the previous season was an event that was not to their liking or didn't encounter & completed enough to get to the grade. Any CoF turned in after that didn't count. People who started later can do more than one grade per Season though. There is a way to catch up.
If it took long-time players 6 seasons to get to grade 6 why would it bother newer players they can't do it in 3 months ?
Adding a new chest with the same type of commendation, how would that help newer players to get the CoF one to grade 6 ? Or would the new chest and the CoF spawn under the same circumstances ?
I agree that 30 per grade is a tad too much, I think 20 would have been better.
@europa4033 who said anything about getting the full 180 during this/one season ?
Every season for a while now has added 30 chests, in some seasons its easier to nab the chests then others and when the season hits that puts it in FoTD its just an easier catchup since it is fully player controlled when and how many times it spawns.
Also, in contrast to every other commendation based cosmetic this one is the most rewarding, because each grade unlocks a new set of cosmetics instead of only at grade V or so.
And in the end, since it only changes every season players have 3 months to gather/catchup on the previous seasons, adding to the fact that not everyone needs to have everything but is able to still get them it gives stretch goals.
Just compare the Chest of Fortune with the Skull of siren song, when it was introduced everyone and their grandmother went for that thing… then after only a short period of time, people had their comms and nobody cares. While the CoF still has people going for it. Even though the CoF was introduced 8 months before the Skull of siren song.
