Give us a real character creator!

  • PLEASE RARE give us a real character creator and not the random pirate roulette you currently have! It's SO FRUSTRATING that I can get my pirate to almost look how I want, but every time there's some detail off that I can't change. It's so stupid when literally every other game out there that let's you choose and create a character let's you properly customize your character to be unique and YOU, not just some randomly generated character that was the best you could find. I want to be able to actually choose all of the different options for my character that the random character generator is choosing for me, I don't want something else to make the choices for me. So PLEASE get rid of the random character generator nonsense that NOBODY likes and let US the players actually customize OUR characters to be what we want them to be!

I like the IPG. It prevents everyone from making Jack Sparrow look-alikes.

You don't speak for everyone. I like it.

Rare made it to prevent people from making the abominations you see in Skyrim and Dark Souls, where people set the sliders to maximum.

"Stopping the abominations that could occur with a fully freely mixed character creator is something we put a lot of time into behind the scenes" - Lead Character Artist Sam Chester

  • @m1ke-da-1ke yes please

  • @m1ke-da-1ke I do not like the pirate generator. More options please.

  • So. Small detail is off about your pirate. A detail maybe you don’t even see 99% of the time.

Mind you, you only see your own pirate by doing emotes. Which during actual gameplay isn’t all the time.

I like the IPG. It prevents everyone from making Jack Sparrow look-alikes.

    This.

  • @guildar9194 I understand that you like it, but personally I don't and I don't see why Rare can't just allow US to choose what OUR pirate looks like.
Sure you have the lame excuses of "it's to prevent people from maxing out the sliders" so then simply limit the sliders so that they can't max them out to the point that it creates an "abomination" of a character!

I see no reason why we can't have the option to choose from a preset list of faces, body types, and then other details like the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, skin color, scars, and tattoos. If you sit on the character creator long enough (which I definitely have unfortunately 😭) you'll notice there are only so many different options in the game when it comes to body type, faces, hair styles, noses, eyes, ears, mouths, skin color, gender. It seems to me like there's a preset list of all of these different parts that the random character generator selects from randomly to generate a "random" pirate. Why not just remove the generator and just let the players select from the presets and customize their character to their liking?

Also, if kids want to look like Jack Sparrow in a pirate game then LET THEM BE JACK SPARROW WHO CARES! It's supposed to be a fun enjoyable experience for EVERYONE, so I see no harm in allowing players to customize their character to look the way that they want THEIR CHARACTER to look.

  • @burnbacon well it's a "small" detail but in reality there are only so many "details" that can be different about your pirate. Mine has the face I want, the skin color I want, the eyes I want, the ears I want, the mouth I want, but it doesn't have the hair nor the body type that I want. But I can't just go into the character creator and say "I would like to use body type C instead of body type A and hair style D instead of hair style F" because Rare refuses to allow their players to create their own Pirate!

Also again WHO GIVES A FLYING FISH STICK if kids load up the game and make their pirate look like Jack Sparrow!!! If anything it'll make Rare more money from them going into the emporium to buy all of the pirates life cosmetics to then make their pirate look like Jack Sparrow! So in reality that's a positive thing and not a negative.

  • It's supposed to be a fun enjoyable experience for EVERYONE

So I guess i don’t count as everyone. Because this doesn’t suit my interests. (And many others) Different opinions.

The random generator was made for its purpose. All pirates different and not one pirate will ever look alike.

So when a popular streamer makes a character. Someone changes there name and looks like that streamer, goes around giving them bad rep. Is that good? ;)

  • @m1ke-da-1ke no. It is currently a lucrative way of monetisation

  • would like this

  • Used it twice. Got what I wanted both times. I did get tired of grandma pirate so I used my small seasonal allowance to buy a potion. Selected each in about 10 minutes of effort.

    It's fine.

  • Couldn't you vary the characters from time to time, I spend hours scrolling through and never see a Pirate I like and when I find one that's somewhat appealing, once chosen they never look as good as the one you picked. It's almost like everything in the game has to be green, black or a dark depressing red. Either way the cosmetics are not something that appeals to me.
Changing the look of the pirates would help. It does feel like they have never done this.

  • Your Ugly Pirate is beautiful and unique.

    +1 for IPG

For this reason I would personally like to be able to keep pirates I have generated in the past, in addition to my current one. It would be a better off-set to having a character creator (as much as I would want one, I know that's not what Rare has in mind). Had a real gruff looking old man, and now play a muscular pirate woman. I like both, I would like to keep both. If anything I would buy more potions if I got to keep past appearances. (Even better if I could save my cosmetics to a 'loadout' of sorts, or per pirate.)

  • I love my ugly pirate and I understand their desire to not have a fully creative mode, but I do wish they had filters for male/female(bandage or unbandaged) and young/old(the grey hair plays with dyes) as those directly impact how cosmetics look on your pirate.

  • Why are so many players against having more options or filters? What is this ''I like the IPG and you should too'' mentality. And the argument that pirates would look alike, as if we don't have dozens of Jack Sparrow clones already. Gender and Bodytype filters would help immensely. If you want to make a cool pirate or a really ugly one, you can do that.

  • Chenzo01 agreed

  • @m1ke-da-1ke why complain about the hair inside the creator, it can be changed in game

  • Sot changed in season 7 in a lot of ways. One of those ways is replacing a random system with a Captaincy/individuality system.

Because the system changed I think character creation should change with it.

It's not a random situation anymore, it's a Captaincy situation. Banners, boat names, guilds, guild names, saved boats and cosmetics, logbooks. It's not random and because it's not random anymore it only makes sense to allow custom character creation so people can tell their stories.

I think both systems have pros and cons. Random can be good for true escapism, it can be helpful in challenging beauty standards, etc. It strongly limits individuality.

A system of individuality can create some drama, people can go overboard with it but it allows for people tell their stories as they see fit. Can support identity in the experience.

Most people will like it. Not many things that most people would like. Makes it worth it.

  • I think games offering custom character appearance do grab a wider audience than those that feel forced or restrictive, but with SoT it seems players who are very patient or very lucky, end up with something acceptable to them as things stand now.

The chief advantage of a dedicated toolset for 'creation' seems to be saving player time or for bad luck insurance. It could be worth it to the devs though. I played an mmo with good customization and (4?) character slots and put a ton of effort into maximizing that to 50+ and spending to get nearly all uniform and costume sets.

Think in terms of thousands of dollars over about 5 years. So how much do we want to pay for any of that? Some will pay a lot. I doubt it would hurt the game and may do much for extending it's lifespan 🎈
