Removal of Harpoon Hitmarkers

  • It doesn't really make sense as to why you get a hitmarker for shooting a harpoon. I've had quite a few instances within hourglass fights where I "hit" a snipe through a wave or in line with the harpoon and have no way of knowing if I sniped the harpoon or the player. Introducing a new hitmarker (different color perhaps?) to help differentiate between a player and harpoon could work or even just a setting to disable hitmarkers for harpoons, but I feel that simply making it so that you don't get a hitmarker at all for hitting the harpoon would be the easiest and best solution. There's no real need for them in my opinion as they can cause quite a bit of uncertainty within naval fights.

  • So. What I’m seeing is…

You are confused if your shot was an actual shot or hitting the harpoon…. I’m more confused why you’re aiming at one.

  • @fiberfrag I think they brought it in specifically because harpoons can be used to board now so hitting them to disconnect is more important than previously. Was funny because this came in earlier we all assumed was a bug

  • Im pretty sure harpoons technically count as "living" entities since they can be damaged with an effect, so as a side effect for it they get a hit marker. The same thing can happen with bottles of rum where if you sword lunge them you can start sprinting instantly as if you hit an enemy.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not so I'll clarify anyways.. if you're spiraling a sloop for example, there are moments where a high wave blocks your vision. In these scenarios, you might just blindly snipe through the wave and get a hitmarker or the more common situation is being in front of the ship while spiraling, aiming at a player who is in line with the harpoon (let's say positioned by the stairs or near the mast) and it can be quite challenging to tell if the shot hits the player or the harpoon since both give hitmarkers. The waves make this more difficult to tell - along with being on a moving ship, the other ship bobbing in the water, and distance from the ship, but if harpoons didn't give the same hitmarker as players or hitmarkers at all, then there'd be no issue.

I actually don't remember when hitmarkers for harpoons got introduced. Do you happen to know roughly when they implemented that? Feels like it's been in the game for a while and not adding that feature in the same update as the one with the other harpoon features from this most recent update seems a bit strange, but perhaps that is the actual reasoning behind it.

Didn't know about that with the sword lunge on bottles.. interesting. It's definitely not a major issue, but I still feel as though having some way to differentiate between hitting a player vs hitting the harpoon would be nice in my opinion.

  • My only comment on this is you can snipe the harpoon to disconnect it, I do actually use this feature so I'd personally prefer a toggle in the settings

Yeah I understand. I doubt anything will be done to change how it currently is, but an option to toggle the hitmarker would be great - and just to be clear I think the harpoon should still disconnect or drop a barrel when shot regardless of whether or not it gives a hitmarker.
