Sea of Thieves is in an abbismal state to be played on PC let alone be released onto the PS5 for a new crowd

  • Ever since the release of the GDK this game has become unplayable with a bug at every corner. Died and couldn't spawn for ages, being put in weird servers with abnormal ping and getting a failed event toast after sinking the final boss of a fleet probably not counting the attempt, constant cheaters in HG. Yes, I have opened multiple tickets on many issues some solved some have no answer. Why is this game set on being released on the PS5 in this state? First impressions should be amazing not a constant headache...

  • Why is this game set on being released on the PS5 in this state?

We have a month...all the time in the world
and as a D1 player, I can tell you, they had bugs and crashes on launch. So PS players will get the full welcome package :P

  • It’s interesting how people’s experiences can be so different. I play on PC but unlike you have only encountered the odd lag spike during my last few sessions of play.
I understand the frustration, but remember, it must be difficult to make any game that supports multi-platform play, and within a platform has to also support a range of hardware. So it will be interesting to see how they manage adding PS5 to the mix.

With this comment it proves the fact that they should be hammering down on fixing what they have since it's difficult and maybe not push for ps5. I mean it would have been smarter to considering the state of the game. To be fair as well i am sure from my IT background many of the issues is not hardware related on the player side. A lot of it is coding issues that have not been resolved and the lag can be backend or the fact that azure servers are not made for gaming but here we are. /shrug

  • I think PS5 will be like everything else up to this point.

A bunch will try it and a bunch will move on when they lose some treasure, or find that it's just not their style of play, or can't maintain a crew with their friends so they move on. Might try again later, might not.

Some will get really into it and just work around whatever happens until they personally get frustrated from the issues or get caught up in SoT cliques that'll convince them it's more frustrating than they personally feel.

Some will be lifers, for better or worse lol.

This game gets people more frustrated the longer they have been around, the longer they have been around the social media side (which can often be joy draining and discouraging), and the more skilled and more pvp focused they get.

Unless they just flat out can't log in and play for long amounts of time I don't think it'll change much.

At the end of the day only so many are gonna stick around anyway and the ones that do likely won't get as frustrated until later in their experience.

i don't think people experiences vary that much. The majority of the community has been very vocal about the new update making performance worse and causing a lot of bugs...

I'm pretty sure they do. I played for 3-4 hours this weekend without any issues at all. That's a pretty different experience from the OP.

  • @capt-soul-beard

I personally don't have any trouble running the game on PC.

    But your concern is appreciated.

  • @capt-soul-beard i am i the akward position of playing sot on an external harddisk with long load times. When the new update came, it majorly improved the game for me. Port merrick now loads, while previously it would only show the base lappings without details for 30 seconds upon reaching the outpost. Loading in first time of the day went from 3 minutes to 15 seconds. In addition far less delays. I understand im a minority, but i can only say that it has improved. I have movement freezes rarely, but seems to be a server issue or internett.

  • @gosva5434 Hmmm…I can be on a Gally with my crew. Two play on steam, one on Xbox and one on PC through the store and we can all have differing experiences whilst playing. My Xbox playing crewmate was having crashes while the rest of us played without problem.
But I don’t believe it’s the majority who are being vocal about it either, it’s just that those who don’t have problems aren’t making it known, because why would they, if things are hunky dory :)

  • I play both PC and xbox and it's actually worked better for the past six months with no lag or any of the bugs i used to experience but obviously not good if it's the opposite experience from other players.

  • Performance in the present build on Xbox Series X (GDK update) is the worst it’s been.
Frequent crashes and bugs (ie skeletons not spawning on Sailor’s Knot) aside, the frame rate is in a disgraceful state.
Almost any interaction in the game, from traversing islands and even just transitioning from below deck to above deck and looking around brings constant micro-judder and stuttering. The inconsistency feels shoddy and awful.
I hope the devs sort this out before the PS5 launch, or Digital Foundry are going to have a field day with “the world’s most powerful console” from Microsoft.

  • @x-raven-77-x for pc (at least me and my mate) we have seen GDK fix a lot of bugs and hugely improve fps.

  • I've had literally zero issues lol

Hardware plays a part for some issues but most of the annoying issues have always been server related. Ping spikes, stutters and hit registration exist on any PC configuration and I wish they were as uncommon as you made it sound.
My standards are pretty low so the only thing I'm hoping is for the servers to not get worse once SOT is released on PS5.

  • Apart from the HG bugs where ship parts become inactive and the Shipwright supply bug, SoT is in the best form it’s ever been in.

I rarely disconnect, my ship doesn’t catapult into the air, my hit markers actually are now server side. I can catch the mast before it drops all the way onto my ship.

Maybe you weren’t around in mid 2020 but the game has improved significantly since then. The developers almost always address player issues with a video first and follow up with a patch.

I look forward to the Easy Anti Cheat solution and seeing fewer ‘sus’ moments in my gameplay experiences.

  • Agree 100%.
Ever sknce the patch its been a buggy, stuttering mess for me too.

  • The GDK update seems to have been a very mixed bag. With the vast majority of issues seeming to be on consoles or lower end PCs incorrectly defaulting to DX12, when it should auto detect and enable DX11.

Other issues on the Microsoft Store version are quite perplexing, but that doesn't surprise me given past issues with software from that store. Just one of the reasons I switched to the Steam version last year (although I keep both installed just in case). I did notice they finally fixed VRR on the MS Store version though, which is nice.

Some, such as me, are seeing a big improvement in the game's general performance, however. Framerates, LOD culling, and CPU optimisation have all improved drastically with DX12.

In my opinion, the "abysmal state" of the game has more to do with the disappointing abundance of bugs and exploits right now. Some of which have literally been a problem for multiple Seasons. Speaking to other players, this does seem to be a big contributor to them not wanting to play Sea of Thieves at the moment.

Now with the GDK build live and EAC coming next week, I think the majority of players would agree that the focus for the next couple of months should be on eradicating as many of these issues as possible.

By the sounds of Drew's talk in yesterday's News video, that does appear to be the case. So I believe there is reason to be optimistic for the future.
