Crash on startup

  • My game crashes after the splash screen everytime I try to play. When I open the game it tells me that it wasn't shut down correctly and if I want to run a file integrity check. If i click YES or NO it's the same and the game crashes shortly after the splash screen. I uninstalled it multiple times and completely reset my PC but it still doesnt work. I watched every tutorial, tried every possible fix that I could find and the game still doesn't launch. When i gave my profile info to a friend he downloaded the game from my profile and it worked for him so I'm guessing it's not an account related issue. I have around 16 hours of playtime and my laptop is good enougt to run in (I5, RTX3050, 16GB ram). I don't know what to do anymore. I have contacted the customer support and I am currently waiting for a response.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Same issue here

  • same here, i tried uninstall and reinstall but nothing, the game starts but i go 1fps and than crashes

  • Same here please lets spread awareness

  • Can you tell us what fixes you have tried?

Reading the lastest patch notes, it said that sot was upgraded to latest xbox sdk and it's recommended to upgrade your graphics drivers to maximise compatibility.

  • i had this happen on my old laptop as well. it used to be able to run sea of thieves in the early days but hasnt been able to in a while without crashing. so i thought maybe the GDK update make it more stable. instead its the opposite. now after a long load the game crashes before the title screen just like you are saying but instead of just saying the integrity check its also telling me my graphic drivers need updating. well the laptop is so old there havent been driver updates since 2020 so no luck there for me.

good rule of thumb is always make sure you update your graphic drivers if you havent done that yet. download the geforce experience theres usually a driver update every 2-3 months or so

  • If you're running the Steam version of the game put "-dx11" (without the ") in the Launch Options (in the game's Properties). This will force the game to launch with DirectX11 instead of DirectX12. This is something that can also be changed in the game options but, obviously, that's not possible if you can't launch the game in the first place. The game should autodetect whether to use DX11 or DX12 but it appears that's broken in some cases.

  • @realstyli did this and it didnt work c:

In that case, I would say to do a Graphics Driver update, if you haven't already.

If you get a crash with a particular file named, make note of it and delete it from the game folders (it might take some time to find). Then verify files on Steam and it will download the missing files again.

You could also try running an SFC scan and DISM checks to see if there are any Windows system corruption issues that could be causing problems (this is something that fixed problems I was having with the game crashing after I rebuilt my PC). You can google how to do these but it's fairly simple.

Beyond that, I would suggest contacting support and listing off the things you have already tried.

  • Did you get any help?? I just got past my issue of it crashing on the splash screen, however I now crash every time it says “confirm and assemble crew” and it tells me “sea of thieves didn’t shut down correctly” and whether I hit yes check the files or no it still crashes.

  • After the GDK update, continuous crashes on the initial game loading screen also happen to me. Before now, I've been playing since release in 2018, never happened. I had just formatted my PC and installed the latest drivers. To be sure that it wasn't my PC's fault since I had just formatted, I redid the formatting, updated to the latest Win 11 updates and installed the latest drivers available for GPU and chipset. I still got crashes as soon as I started SoT.
I also have the Steam version and decided to download this one. The Steam version on the other hand is solid as a rock and didn't give me any problems, after a few days I decided to start the Microsoft Store version which was incredibly stable and I didn't have any more crashes, until I updated the driver version of the GPU: after the update the Microsoft Store version crashes again while the Steam version is stable.
So I'm wondering if it's some kind of issue related to the Microsoft Store version after the new GDK update?
Can anyone else do the same test and verify that the Steam version is stable?
I don't play on a laptop but the specifications of my PC are:
    Ryzen 7 7800X3D
    Radeon RX 7800 XT
    32 GB ram 6000Mhz
    PSU 1000W
