Other games from our past.

  • I'm so new here, I still have the receipt taped to my face. That said, I'm looking forward to doing more here, but I've played a lot of games and I was curious what other people here have played also. I know why I came to SoT, but I still love Ark Survival Evolved, and other games. I want to play them all but alas I have to choose what I can make fit my schedule.

So for me I make time for SoT, PUBG, Warface, World of Tanks/Warships, Conan Exiles, and Elder Scrolls Online, Star Trek Online, and when I really have time I activate the Ark servers.

I'd love to see what games other people like or remember fondly. What were, or still are your other ports of call?

  • Prior to SoT

ESO - Played it constantly at launch for a year. Came second place in the race to be Emperor
    The Division
    Diablo 3
Diablo IV - beat Abattoir of Zir for the first time this morning

  • @phantaxus All fun choices there 👍

  • The games I remember most fondly are linked to people from my journey through life. I've never really attached much to games as games, it's typically what is going on around them and the people involved.

The one exception to that was a game that I randomly sat down that I knew nothing about. I don't read reviews on games, I don't check out videos first, and I didn't have interest in the genre of gameplay.

I've long been a go-with-my-gut kind of adventurer and for whatever reason on that day my gut lead me to a game called What Remains of Edith Finch. It was my favorite solo gaming experience. As storytelling, as art, as food for thought, it's something special.

  • @wolfmanbush I wish I had that one. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

If you're comfortable sharing, what was the "why" when you started sot?

What do you enjoy doing in sot the most?

Do you have plans to really get into it or just play casually and as a variety game?

  • @wolfmanbush We got SoT as part of a XBox package. I am always looking for games I can play with family and friends. We were to invested in Ark SE when we got it, so it sat neglected for awhile. I'd go in and play the tutorial every so often to not forget about it. I'm afraid if I don't take a deep dive soon, I'll never get to it. First I want to explore and get a taste of everything, then set some higher goals. The biggest obstacle is going to be time.

What I enjoy so far? SoT is a very pretty looking game with great environmental effects and a bright pallet. There seem to be lots of things to explore, and ship handling feels pretty good. I'm optimistic about what comes next.

Plans are a little open ended. I intend to avoid the deep end for awhile, or try to join a more experienced crew and just generally get better. I expect to get destroyed in pvp for quite awhile before I'm any good. I'd like to get a guild going and gradually lure family and friends in over time. This will affect how entrenched I eventually get here.

My wife influences my game choices since we try to play the same things together. She likes pvp less than pve. We both prefer our pvp as battle royale or teams, otherwise we usually opt for pve. The key with that is clarity. For example, PUBG is clear about things, and if it isn't you or a squadmate you burn it down. With Ark SE you had a foggy situation where players might be either friendly or hostile, but worse are the ones who join you and backstab your clan destroying months of work, and all trust.

Pvp by appointment is something I like. It's clean and generally honorable. That doesn't mean I will complain if I get ambushed on High Seas, I just prefer the aesthetic of a duel when dealing with other human beings. If something seems cruel, like stalking noobs, I won't be doing that, otherwise if I end up on your crew, I'd try to be useful.

Long term I'm going to try to learn the game this year so casual at first. In the second year I'd like to be in with a good group and have it be a regular thing. Probably after a few years it be like how I am with Star Trek Online where I'm on for about 2 months in a year. Been doing that a long time.

    That's where I'm at today. ✌️😁

  • I just have to convince my sweety that SoT is just like GTA Online but with pirates. 🤞

  • I guess we want to talk about recent games we have played, and not something like Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 games.

So some late games i have enjoyed and still enjoy, are
Anno 1800, Deep Rock Galactic, Rimworld, Valheim, Space Engineers, Software Inc and Cities Skylines.

Before that i used to be a huge Battlefield player, mainly Bad Company and then Battlefield 3, after that the series went from bad to horrible.
I also have a lot of hours in Diablo 2 and 3. Havent tried out 4.
The Witcher, Skyrim and Cyberpunk were also games that ate a lot of my time.

Nowadays as an older player, i have to be selective as my reaction times are not what they used to be, but im still trying out new stuff.

At the moment i have about 180 hours THIS year in SoT, with total amount of played hours much, much higher as i started playing SoT, way back in march 2018. (Day one player.)

EDIT: ... forgot about the GTA series. But im kind of buycotting GTA online, as the game is nowadays all about getting real money from players, or forcing them into a horrible grind.

  • My earliest memories are games from the Nintendo 64 and Sega Megadrive. Banjo and Kazooie, Desert Strike, Super Mario 64. Some other games I remember fondly are the PS2 GTA's, Croc, Crash Bash, Conflict Desert Storm series and Stars wars battlefront 2.

Elder scrolls 4 Oblivion is probably the first large scale RPG I picked up, diablo 2 was fun, old school runescape, I was big on Call of Duty 4 and then probably Skyrim/the witcher 3. Played quite a lot of flight sims over the years too. I used to play the Total War series quite alot, occasionally still go on Rome 2.

Now I mostly stick to SoT, Elden ring, Baldurs gate 3 and Ark now and then. Time to play is now my biggest issue as opposed to what I want to play in my younger days.

Welcome to the forums and Sea of Theives though, hope you enjoy your time here, the game is great, it has its issues but overall its worth it.

  • Speaking of old games, does anyone remember Pirates? C64 game when I first played it, but an Xbox version exists.

  • I'm going to dabble in SoT a lot, but I have also been invited to an Ark server cluster over the holiday so I'll probably try to do that Friday. However I should still be looking to join a crew in either HS or SS, and both SoT and the Insider version, at some point this week. I'm not good yet, fair warning.

    Happy New Year! 🎈

  • I come from a bygone era of gaming.

I have played E.T. on the Atari 2600 as a rental product.

  • @personalc0ffee Ah yes! The good old days 🙂

So I'm in my mid thirties so I've seen basically the rise of video games and the internet, and the near death recovery of them.

One of my all time favorite PSX titles is Legend of Dragoon, which is a 4 disc RPG made by Sony, recently remastered of sorts on the PSN. The narrative is fantastic, the addition and dragoon systems were interesting, and the turn based combat was what you expect from most TBRPG.

You play the game for the characters, world, and narrative.

  • @personalc0ffee Haven't played that one, sadly. Early 60's myself. Had a Commodore 64. We sold the first run Nintendo games from the electronics shop I worked at. Good times. Switched to playstation when Resident Evil came out. Switched to Xbox when Ace Combat did. Always, always played on a computer over all that time.

    Happy New Year

Oh shoot, I can talk old school with you then.

I've got friends that are late Xbox or w/e and they did not grow up with those kind of systems.

I actually never personally played the Com 64 but I did dabble and play around with a very old floppy disk only computer as a child. All games and programs were on floppy. It was some kind of IBM.

Regretably we also had an original IBM Model M keyboard which is now gone.

  • @personalc0ffee First two games I played on anything electronic at home were Pong, and B1 Bomber. The latter was on a tape drive Vic 20. Another was Midway, which was a naval sim. We would go in and change the program to have friends names on ships and targets in the game, so we would be bombing John, and sinking Carl. A fresh install would fix our nonsense and we would change something else.

Floppies and tapes were fragile. Still have the C64 stuff but it needs looking over before I'd turn them on. 🤞

  • @personalc0ffee Well maybe we can team up on Xbox sometime 🤞

While having an Atari 2600, we had few games for it.

Mostly it was SNES, Gameboy, and Playstation for me.

Never had Xbox until an adult. Basically I had no idea about Xbox until the surge of Halo.

I agree the shark cards are ... sharky 😉

I had a certain mission down cold so I'd get the value of a shark card a few times a day when grinding it. Somehow I still don't have a yacht though 🤔 hmm ...

I did spend a fair bit on the game, but mainly I was gifting to friends so they would play it with me. I remember two friends logged in to join me for their first time and they were stalked brutally by two guys in combat vehicles who murdered them each time they respawned. It was constant for about 15 minutes. I thought they would quit but they stuck it out. Had some great missions together.

I'll always have fond memories of it all. Especially of my wife driving delivery while we were straffed by jets and those flying bikes. They were kinda sore getting shot down and just thinking of it put the biggest smile on my face😁. Also the little arcade business when fully set up, the games were playable.

But yeah GTA is cash grabby in spite of that, and SoT seems much better in that regard. 👍

  • I was on the Destiny 2 hamster wheel for quite some time, but when you purchase a few hundred dollars worth of content and they decide to take it all away...

The games I look back on most fondly are the early 2d Metroid games, Shadowrun on the snes the early Zelda games, Wizards and Warriors Rygar and Trojan. Most of which were on the Nes. To join in on the PC conversation, I loved the Sierra games, Kings Quest 2 and Police Quest being my favorites.

I mowed a lot of lawns to scrape up the money for my Nintendo. I wanted to make sure I could play anything, so I went with the deluxe edition which came with the light gun and ROB the robot. So, instead of getting Super Mario Brothers, my system came with Duck Hunt which I have no complaints about and Gyromite. Old ROB is still up in the attic somewhere, probably next to the Kinect.
