The ability to play individual notes on instruments!

  • I know this suggestion might be more effort than it could be worth, but I also think it would be really cool to see something like this implemented.

The only thing you can do with instruments is select one of the available shanties and hold one button to play it. It's practical for what it is, but what if we were allowed to select a "free play" shanty option, hold down (or toggle) the play button, and then press other buttons to play individual notes? A bit like the Ocarina in the old N64 Zelda games. That would allow people to create their own songs on their favorite instrument and play it at will, adding a lot of creativity with the community.

Granted, this option would make it very hard or impossible to move while you're playing, but if you're standing still while waiting for something to cook or for the ship to arrive at its destination, fiddling around with an instrument and creating new songs on the fly could be a lot of fun!

I was about to suggest Ocarina's freestyle mode 🎶🎶

  • I'd welcome this. I'm.... proficient at Rust's Guitar.

  • There is a game that does this very well, allowing you to create your own songs, which is mordhau But I think it's difficult to have something like that in Sea of Thieves, after all they don't seem very interested in what we have to say

  • The music/shanties in Sea of Thieves is more complex than 'just let us do it'. The shanties themselves are crafted so that anyone can join in, with any other instrument and still sync with other players (playing potentially multiple instruments).

There is a YouTube video that goes into it a bit here (Around the 5 min mark if the time stamp doesn't work)

  • @look-behind-you

It would still be cool if we could make noise tho.

As a formal music student (piano, cornet, percussion) I do very much appreciate the composition of the shanties when multiple instruments are playing and their individual melodies/rhythms.

But I wanna play the Price is Right sad song on my Hurdygurdy.

    Is that so wrong? 😇😋

  • @pithyrumble ....In before people start playing inappropriate st......too late 😏

  • We know it can be done when the instrument is in a fixed place but my worry is UI clutter and making the experience a visual hell. SoT after all is designed to be as immersive as possible.

You have a headset, whistle the server a beautiful whimsical shanty of your own creation.

Former or formal? Not to toot your own horn or nothing.

  • @hijack-hayes

    Both

I totally get that, and it's a very neat feature, don't get me wrong! But there could also be two "modes" on the instruments, one for regular shanties and one for free play.

You could have two pirates playing the same shanty, and then on the side, have a third pirate join in with "free play" selected and add custom accompanying notes to the shanty. And then, if he wants to stop that, he can go back to shanty mode and join the duo

  • @someguy3657 Unless your pings to each other are sub-50ms (iirc), then you can't sync up with free played music.

i.e. they'd play a note according to the music they hear, but according to you it would be off beat.

Damn, that does take away one of the joys of this idea.

But still, I think being able to free play instruments could be a fun addition to the game. Certainly makes getting those "Shanties played on board" pirate milestones more fun to get!

    Got me there. I scuttle.

  • @knurd9369 I suspect they noticed players using the bell in Summoning the Megalodon bc I've never had someone tell me that it was off-rhythm and there's no way that it isn't getting desynced.
