Please consider updating the Language and "Configuring Text to Speech Game Transcription" page so it makes more sense to PC users.

  • Hi there,

I am trying to sort out my game so I can chat and then the AI voice will read it out to my ship mates. I have lost my voice and it might be for some time...

I did the Windows G set up and selected text to speech as enabled and selected an AI voice.

It didn't work. So I googled it and was led to the "Configuring Text to Speech Game Transcription" page, but it seems quite confusing.

    It says:

"Sea of Thieves supports Text to Speech transcription. With this enabled you’ll be able to hear what other pirates type in the chat and also hear descriptions of the emotes they do." - With what enabled and where?

"Previously this feature was only compatible with the Xbox platform setting. We now offer the ability to override the platform setting completely. Those who prefer to use the platform can continue to do so." - What is the Xbox Platform? Is it the physical Xbox or is this relating to the Windows + G xbox overlay thing? Is this saying that SOT now has its own independent AI voice reader for chat and that I do not need to do anything with the Window + G overlay Xbox thing??

"To override the platform setting and enable Text-to-Speech from within Sea of Thieves:

    Navigate to Settings – Language
Move down to the section titled Text and Speech

Change Text-To-Speech Override - Change it to what? Enabled? Disabled? Not Overridden?
Not Overridden: game will use Xbox platform settings - Huh? this is confusing...what Xbox platform?
Enabled: Text-To-Speech will be forced on regardless of Xbox platform settings So I need this one right? Well it didn't work when I tried this setting.
Disabled Text-To-Speech will be forced off regardless of Xbox platform settings What does this mean to a PC user? Do I need this disabled, enabled or do I connect this bit with the flux capacitor and perform the settings change via the medium of dance?

Now the language settings on their own in game - these seem very confusing too, but perhaps I am just easily confused! So can we have a PC centric explanation as to how to get text to speech working please that doesn't mention the Xbox console/platform please? (whichever it is?) Tried reddit, opened a ticket - no joy sadly, now trying here. :)

    Thanks in advance.

  • It’s not just you, the wording is indeed unintuitive. You seem to have followed the steps correctly though, so my only thought is: Have you gone to your privacy settings on your Microsoft account on the Xbox website to make sure the option to communicate with other players is on? That’s the only other thing I can personally think of as to why it’s still not working.

If you selected a custom AI voice instead of the default, make sure you followed the steps like in this YouTube tutorial

Hi thanks for the reply. Glad I am not the only one! :)

I logged in and checked privacy options. Seems to be set to "allow" for all options. It was worth checking. I also use the default AI voice.

    Thanks again.

  • @gunner-rat hopefully someone who has had this issue will be able to help. My only ongoing issue with the TTS is being unable to hear if I’m in a discord VC at the same time. I haven’t been able to figure out why that is, had friends try to help me troubleshoot. And even weirder I can sometimes hear when our session first starts and then a few chats later I can’t anymore.

  • @abjectarity Ah hang on - are you saying that TTS doesn't work for you if you are in a discord VC? I play that way too, so I am in a Discord VC with my mates, but want to use TTS in the game because it saves me having to tab out and user the discord TTS...

Also I know some may say "well just get your team to read the chat log", but they get frustrated when I am typing something urgent while we are being boarded or shot at etc.

    Cheers

  • @gunner-rat yes it does interfere. Also if the people who you are texting to are in a discord or party chat on Xbox they will not hear you, nor will they hear anyone speaking in game.

  • @abjectarity

Ah, just tired this while not in discord - but still not working. Oh well.
