Accessibility Suggestion: Improve food sizzling sounds

  • When cooking food, the sizzling will change slightly when the food is finished cooking.

I played this for months without knowing about it until my wife pointed it out. She apparently hears the difference every time.

    I don't. At all.

That is not very inclusive for people like me. My ears don't detect really high pitches, and I am guessing the difference in the sizzle sound effects has to do with high-pitched noises. My wife thinks so as well.

Before you blame my audio equipment, we've tried different headphones and speakers, but I never heard a single difference in the sizzle sounds while my wife heard them every time. I feel left out.

Please fix your sizzle sounds. I really love the atmospheric sound design in this game, but the sizzling disappoints me.

Hey, so alternative method since it can be months or years before qol updates are done and I've been accused of being a little......spicy...... in my responses...

    Try the drunk cooking technique?
Drink a grog, load a standard meat (chicken, pork, shark, snake) and play drunk music until it goes back to normal. Food should be done!

There's also visual cues like the puff of smoke right before it changes from light brown to toasty brown.

You could look up the timing and set a stopwatch but drunk cooking requires less micromanagement imo.

  • @pithyrumble
This isn't a quality of life suggestion. I assume most players can hear the difference, but there are players who cannot. This makes it an accessibility issue.

The whole idea of using sound is so we can do other things on the ship as needed so we don't need to keep an eye on the food or watch for the puff of smoke. It would be especially helpful when soloing, which I do relatively often.

Depending on the lighting, it is also difficult to tell when the snake is done since the middle can still appear pink. I've burnt a few snakes by staring at it wondering if it was done and then waiting too long. Being able to hear the difference would prevent this. My wife can hear if it's done when returning to the ship; she doesn't have to hear the transition itself to know if it's done.

I am my own stopwatch, so that's how I usually handle the food, but it would be nice to be able to distinguish the sounds.

  • Someone actually made a website that I use that has timers for everything. It’s really helped me not burn things haha seaoftimers.com

  • If you raise a support ticket there's a specific category for accessibility request, think you have a better chance of it being seen by devs then. Not against this suggestion, as you've said the sound is already there as a cue

  • cool suggestion so yes

but also at this point in the game I would just support both an optional ding for done and text for done cooking

I'm pretty over the "we need this little annoyance for risk/reward while we completely throw off the meat and taters of risk reward as a whole" so I have no issue with people cheesing their meats. Convenience/qol/accessibility is worth more now imo on things that aren't harming others or causing a disturbance in the force of combat.

I also just think it fits with captaincy, little perks like knowing when it's done should be a part of captaincy cooking.

  • Have the parrot do a warning, "Braaak food is done Braaak" :)

  • @zucriy-amsuna not doubting your hearing but there is a notable difference between uncooked and cooked food. Best described as “crackling for uncooked/cooking” and “spitting for cooked/burnt food” that’s how I know the difference, and it’s very obvious to me.

I do agree though that a clear indication of sound for those of harder hearing would be useful.

  • @tesiccl
My wife described it in a similar way, but I still hear absolutely no difference.

  • You listen for the sounds? I just watch the colors or actually set a timer :p

  • I just stare at it and watch for the 2 flicker states but I can also hear the distinct sizzle and popping noise it makes when it is done.

  • @burnbacon
We have more important things to do on the ship, like steering, organizing supplies/loot, fishing, and blasting to a nearby island being passed to collect stuff from barrels. All things that can be done while the food is cooking, most of which are in sizzle range.

    @PersonalC0ffee
Flicker states? Sounds like a graphical issue to me; the color changing is relatively gradual.

  • I know its QoL suggestion and all, but how exactly does the food sizzling sound change when cooking? ^^

  • @zig-zag-ltu
If you can't tell, your ears are like mine.

  • @zucriy-amsuna I honestly don't think it's a thing. Normally you judge by color or qualities in structure. I'd imagine a blind person could tell a difference, since our other senses become enhanced if you lose one, but it would be more gradual and would not have any 'ding' when its ready. So I would imagine the state where it's almost cooked and perfectly cooked would sound the same.

Btw I believe the sound does change a bit when the food is burnt or I am imagining it? (I try not to do it often)

You don’t need an extra website for this...
    Fish is 45 seconds
    Meat is 1 minute
Big versions are double that time, so:
Trophy fish 1 minute 30 seconds
Big meat (kraken and meg) 2 minutes

    It's not rocket science...

  • I cooked a bunch of fish and I had read this post previously, I could not identify the sound change at all, and I was timing the fish.

I find the website easier to use than my phone’s stopwatch, but to each their own.

  • @foambreaker the overall sound doesn't change actually...there is just another higher sizzling added to it...like when you cook irl when oil starts spreading all over (don’t know how else to say this in english)

  • @schwammlgott Ah, thanks, I will listen for that.

Yes the food will very quickly flicker when it swaps to the half cooked state and then flicker again before it transitions to the done form. It's just model swapping but they aren't hiding it and players can see it if they are watching the food.

The model swap happens before the appearance changes.

  • @personalc0ffee
I have never seen the food flicker like that, but I'll keep an eye out for it next time.

It is like a good 2-3 seconds before the appearance updates.

So food is on a timer of real time.

    It goes like this

    raw
timer starts soon as you put it down
halfway in it goes to a half cooked state that's when you can see the quick flash or flicker
2-3 seconds later the food will update its look to actually look half done
halfway into the final cook stage, it will flicker/flash again
seconds later it will update to look fully cooked and you can begin to hear the sizzle/popping noises to signify the food is fully cooked.

Now, here is a hint for your pirates

If you watch the food and see it flicker for the last stage of doness, you can immediately remove it and it will be fully cooked. It won't matter that the appearance and sound hasn't actually triggered yet because the model was already swapped in.

And I say 2-3 seconds but it might be faster than that. The fact is, the flicker happens before it fully updates the appearance.

  • @zucriy-amsuna

" This makes it an accessibility issue." Agreed.

To me is sounds like a hissing sound or maybe a hissing sound with a C or K letter sound before the hissing .
