Naval Smoke bombs??

  • Hi everyone,

SO we've all sailed through a heavy mist, or experienced smoke around FotD or Reapers.
In the history of naval combat, as recently as WW2, smoke was used to obscure line of sight in combat, create cover during manoeuvre, or for simply shielding an retreat.

I think this could be a good addition to the game, providing it's both limited in effectiveness & works well within the structures of the game, simply to create a few more interesting combat scenario's. Similar in rarity to cursed balls, fired from a cannon like a flare, but effectively just creates a small area-of-effect that obscures vision within this area. Functionally very similar to the mist, but small AoE.

What do you all think about adding smoke to the game?

I like it, tool not rules. Feels to me like more of a keg variant than a cannonball variant though. You light it and when it goes off it spews out smoke for a minute or something before disappearing.

  • Would like it to work as a throw-able as well as cannon ball.

I like where this is going, but in your mind when you throw it does the "source" of the smoke move, or not?

E.g., if I were to spike the smoke bomb on my deck, would the smoke emanate from a moving point as my ship continued to sail, or would the smoke emanate from the point the bomb shattered and just billow out smoke as you sailed away? I see some benefits to both which is why I prefer the keg option.

Smoke pours out of the keg and you can choose to keep the keg as you sail, or light it and drop it behind you... But I do like the idea of tossing a smoke bomb onto an enemy ship and them not being able to see to shoot you. May be a bit too OP that way though.

  • WWII smoke was for other ships. ie a destroyer would conceal the fleet it's protecting, but the destroyer itself would still be visible.

Only application I can really think of for SoT would just be concealing what your crew is doing on deck, like slipping into the water or using a rowboat. But that can be done without smoke already by just minding the angle your ship sits at.

So I don't think it adds anything meaningful to offset a potential performance hit it could cause.

Just a short stationary (relative to its landing position) puff of smoke that hinders sight (for those within and those looking into or behind it), people might still be able to shoot you though - they just might have to guess your location though 😁.

  • I like the idea a lot!

can't upvote this minute for whatever reason.

While I frown at people who keg empty unguarded ships for fun. I would surely smoke yours.

Also this would be loved by the 420 Community :D

I think it could be different sizes. A throwable, a Curse ball, keg. Would be interesting to see how this would change the balance of the game.

  • Love this idea

  • I think it should be a Keg variant instead of a Cursed Ball variant as I don't think this would help with the already peel heavy Hourglass matches.

I like the idea though of course

Yeah this could definitely work too. I like the idea of creating a visual disturbance that can be used tactically. I feel that whether it's something you could fire from a cannon, or something like a Keg that spews out a time-limited cloud is a question of balancing newer VS seasoned players, or how big an effect we're trying to create.
