Character Creation and Quality of Life.

  • (I'm writing this with the assumption that it will get buried under current PVP update posts but nevertheless felt this topic needed to be refreshed upon.)

Why do we not have a character creator in Sea of Thieves?

I know it's a first person largely PVP game but I actually think that makes it even more important, not only do a substantial part of players clearly want for this addition as evidence why character creation's inclusion in a multitude of other online games, but the inclusion of a cosmetic shop in SOT itself and the fact that it funds this game to a large extent should be a sign that fellow pirates clearly also care for how they show off their character to others

    I'd like to highlight a few things following this topic;

    • GTA Online, Skyrim, Cyberpunk2077 and even Destiny another First Person game all have character creation to various extents. This has always been and clearly still is of value to a lot of people myself included.

    • In a cosmetic progression based game like SOT where most of what you will spend your gold on is ALREADY cosmetics; Would being able to put your favorite hairstyle on a character
you actually identify with not only improve the experience?

    • The inclusion of this would allow players to potentially try more looks out instead of having to "Settle" for a the best character they could get at the time and leave the IPG screen with a lukewarm feeling, allowing for potentially higher chance of people going for cosmetic unlocks or purchasing things from the Emporium.

    • This has been asked for, for years. Not only that but I have personally met a lot of people who when asked admitted to not being happy with how their character looked but said they couldn't do anything about it and just gave up, I personally think this is something to rectify on principle alone.

    • A lot of people choose their games based on their character believe it or not, I have met a lot of people who have either passed up games or quit after under 100 hours due to not being able to create a character they actually like, identify with or find enjoyable to play. Especially on a game where it's all about your "Legendary tale as a pirate!" I think actually having a face to that pirate which you like would only serve to improve the experience and bring in more people.

Ultimately I understand that it's unlikely to be added considering there's probably not a "clear" profit margin in including a QoL feature that isn't actively hurting the playernumbers, however I for one think that Quality of Life is instrumental and incredibly important to ANY game especially in the long run.

I also know this could potentially lead to people copycatting each other's character appearances, however that's unfortunately a problem that comes with the territory and I think ultimately it happens not only very rarely for the average player but doesn't seem to have lit any substantial dumpster fires in any other game's community with it included.

This is just my personal observations so what is your opinion? Do you feel the frustration due to this lacking feature, or do you not feel this warrants the devs' concern and time?

  • We already have character customisation. When you first create your character there are various looks you can have. On top of that there are scar customisations, outfit customisations.

I have never heard of anybody passing up a game just because they can’t create a character to look exactly as they would like it to. 🧐

I think it could benefit from certain options to speed up charater creation, Ie.. male/female, or body type - fat/thin/buff etc, but aside from that I don't think it is too bad.

I'd sooner see extra character slots available, even if it's via the Pirate Emporium. Rare say you can have up to 15 ships but only 1 pirate?. Rare pls, stop being silly... :P

  • How did you even start playing without seeing the character creation part?

  • My opinion on this has changed as the environment has changed.

Now that individuality has become more of a priority (milestones, Captaincy, etc) and now that costumes (and skelly curses) have become such a thing (as well as pirate potions) I think the benefit of random character selection has gone from unique and strong to having minimal positive impact.

These changes have lead me to supporting custom character creation. There has always been a case for it when it comes to immersion and identity within piracy and gameplay.

This game has evolved from random characters fighting over a fort to an environment that gives people opportunity to roleplay and immerse beyond just moving treasure around and combat.

Custom characters just line up with direction of the game now imo.

It needs to be a part of something else though, even though it would be a major change, and significant development, it's not enough to hold over a season with activity for a few months. So, it would have to be a part of something that still gets people out there doing something.
