Why is the ORB drop designed like this?

  • Like I can understand that if you made a list of what items would be dropping then less people might tune in. similarly if you listed the order the drops would happen in it would cause the same issue which would lead to less people on each raid and this event is more for the streamers than the viewers because it gives huge exposure to their channels. but i feel like this design is insanely unhealthly. probably the worst fear of missing out rare does. so many people in chat talking about staying up 72 hours downing pots upon pots of coffee and saying stuff like sleep is for the weak. i know its cost me a lot of sleep already and nothing that has dropped is actually anything on my wishlist i have a very specific set i am after and for all i know its not even in the drop table.

also with like 10-15k people viewing at any given moment 3-4 weapon codes per hour if the stream runs 72 hours thats less than 300 people who will have gotten the weapon cosmetics. could have done at least 10 people per hour and made it double that number.

  • it's definitely not for everyone but it is what it is

I see it like people that camp out in lines for something. Is it for me? not really but the people that do it enjoy it.

it's super wild fomo for some but for others it's just community and hanging out for rewards

For me I just worked on getting myself to a more reasonable level of fomo. I'll do stuff if it doesn't go overboard but otherwise I'll just mostly skip it. It's all about switching habits that go too far for habits that aren't as stressful and/or extreme.

  • Doesn't help with the typing "ORB" in chat to win the Gilded Phoenix Weapon Set, but I have been using a couple of extensions to get all of the drops so far.

Automatic Twitch: Drops, Moments and Points
Will watch a Twitch page and automatically collect drops. Doesn't require login, just uses built in Chrome API to listen for events and handle things accordingly.

    Auto redirect timer
Set it to redirect to the "https://www.twitch.tv/seaofthieves" every 5400 seconds (90 minutes). Enable it at a good time, I did it around 45 minutes after a raid redirect so it is roughly in the middle. Very simple source code that uses the Chrome API to handle timing and redirection.

When the SoT channel redirects you to a Raid, the Automatic Twitch extension will grab it for you after roughly 15 minutes. After another 30 minutes or so (depending on when you enable it), it will redirect you back to the SoT channel to wait for the next raid.

Left it open to run through the night while I slept, woke up to everything collected in my inventory. Might need to reset the timer by re-enabling at some point in case the drops get out of sync, but has worked just fine so far :)

  • Yeah the orb streams have been absolutely awful, in regards to actually getting any 'drop' that one has missed in the past. I don't bother with them, they're even more annoying than most twitch drop periods haha.
I had not heard anywhere that this stream would have gilded phoenix weapon giveaways included, that makes it even worse if it's true...

I really dislike how involved this game is with streaming nonsense tbh, seems they would rather have us watch others play than play ourselves, but it's whatever.

They definitely lean into a lurker system to pad activity stats. It makes sense from their point of view, they control the supply and can easily create demand, it's a decent deal for them.

only issue I have with it on this specific topic is more of a preference thing, the selections this year have been largely predictable selections from the sot network. It makes it feel very contrived, reactions are nowhere near what they were last year or potentially could be.

For me personally it's not interesting or as wholesome as it could be when people are expecting it and prepared for it. That's just a preference of mine, I like to see people outside of the network and perks of being connected to people getting some shine

Many of the ones raided have already experienced larger raids by being connected in the streaming community, some of them have even been on sottv. I just enjoy seeing people that have never experienced that sort of support and content visibility having the opportunity through what the orb offers.

I do understand why they do these things how they do them but to me personally it just leans into the cliquey vibe around the sot community, specifically sot streaming.
