Better sword play

  • Man I’ve been playing since the alpha. And scale test. Somehting im most disappointed I. Is the sword play. It was better at launch. But this is a pirate game. Pirate sword fights are iconic. But not many use them in this game because it isn’t meta.

How I wish sword fighting was better. I long for epic pirate sword fights in this game.

  • because it isn’t meta.

That the thing. Meta seems to drive kids to do only the thing that has better results on winning.
Never about having fun or create excitement

I hate the meta idea. I always use a sword and a gun.

  • @kaptaingallows Sword play is not the issue, the real problem is the hit reg.

  • Hit reg is definitely an issue. Many thunk the sword is bad because of it, but neglect the fact that all weapons (and even some equipment) are bad because of it. The sword itself is actually really good, and perfectly balanced for its intended role (which is mobility). Most pirates are just ignorant in how to use it effectively - they run straight at an enemy who points a gun at them while swinging with wild abandon. The key is to dodge and weave and feint - the sword's swing is such that it can hit an enemy to the side or even to some degree directly behind you in some cases. It also allows you to move through an enemy space using its dodge feature to get behind them (block+move+jump all at once), which the firearms can't do, and ir doesn't even have cooldown like the sword charge does. This prevents you from ever getting trapped or outnumbered in close quarters. 😉

People use swords all the time

The double gunning thing is exaggerated in random adventure imo and I'm someone that largely only fights pvpers. Plenty of pvp crews ride sword/gun.

Even though combat consistency in this game is terrible for all weapons there are still quite a few skilled sword players out there and sword players in general.

Oh dang, that's my problem right there. But, I mean, it's pretty menacing when I run straight at them going "YEEEAAARRRRGHGGHGHGH!!" until I get Indiana Jones-ed.

  • I think the beauty lies in simplicity. The very basic concept leaves a lot of variation for tactics and role playing. Complicating the mechanics may be bad for the game in the long run. What changes would you propose?

Imho, the only reason people don't use swords, is because they have a 1hit kill weapon.

Basically use blunder bombs jump around and use shotgun. This is what ruins the PVP. Shotgun should have reduced bullet spread, but also deal less damage. I'm fine with that thing doing 80% or even 90% damage, but having a 1 hit kill weapon is a no brainer for any pvp orientated pirate.

Do you know a single person who could win against anyone with only a sword?
    Only a pistol?

I can see the sniper working out, however a lot of tactical positioning would be required.

In any PVP game, if one weapon outshines the rest, the balance is poor. The only set back is that shot gun has small range, but realistically speaking, how worse that range is compared to pistol (PVP). Not that much imo.

Would really appreciate a nerf to shotgun and have pirates playing with the weapons that they like and feel better with, instead of having 1hk meta gun.

I mean part of the reasons I prefer swords is that my blunderbuss hits never register and I can kill people faster and more reliably with sword spam.

That being said I don't like how swords feel either.
