@tenriak You have to move with your sword in order to block successfully. If your opponent flanks you while your block is locked in the same direction, that's game, set and match.

Isn't the mechanic block with your opponent center screen?

Did you watch the second vid? No flanking occured.

Plot twist: it's PART of the hitreg patch notes.

Sword has worse hitreg than anything else in the game.

Guns are purely ''Hit when should have missed'' or ''Missed when should have hit'' and then Blunder also has Knockback issues.

Sword has:
General Hitreg
Combo Breaking
Combo Loss
Food Reg
Block Reg
Block Break
Lunge Stun Reg
Lunge knockback Reg
Lunge cancel Reg

and probably more I'm missing.

Its such a useful weapon but also by far the most inconsistent of all weapons to a point where you may dominate a fight because of good hitreg or you may just get abused the entire fight because the game just said no.

@tenriak sword blocking only works if the center of both your swords meet. Think of sword block as less of a shield and more of trying to block a cannonball with a bullet

Looks like the typical sword experience to me. The sword has been wonky like this for such a long time that it's almost a feature at this point.

The sword is subject to some of the worst hit-reg in the game. Add to that issues of latency from players, which is a factor I can see in your second clip. That looked like the latency between you and that player was so high that the server wasn't even going to bother with calculating a block mechanic.

@fatbeard1353 I am hearing the patch did not fix sword block. Attacker gets sound cue but opponent takes damage.

It's outright broken, which is probably why we got a couple of server restarts and a hotfix today. You see the other player blocking, but the hits are still getting through in a straight-ahead, standing-still swing.

There's a lot of stuttering going on there. Seems like some kind of server side delay. Almost looks like it's a bad network connection thing, but your ping is steady. What's with those graphics? What are you playing on?

I have the graphics turned down so I can record and play at the same time. The video has more stuttering than the gameplay for some reason. Not really sure why. But yes, I get a lot of stutter. My PC sucks.

I often end up being the sailor while my partner TDM's.

Sword blocking has always been broken in one way or another, so wasn't surprise that it broke even more than usual (I always recommend just dodging only even against sword attacks).

Coding is hard. I wonder how long its going to take to get it fixed. Seems to me like it should be an all hands on deck get it working now thing.

Tbh it's not just this update, Blocking with sword has been completely unreliable for a lot of time.

Everybody complains about hitreg but tbh Sword is much more broken and unreliable than guns, among all the issues the two main ones for me are:

1. Blocking is very unreliable; sometimes it takes up to a second for the game to register the fact that you are blocking which means that you can't block as a reaction to a sword attack as, even tho the animation for blocking is there, one ore more attacks still go through. In a fight where you and your opponent are moving constantly and jumping around (which happens often) his attacks will still pass through the block even if you perfectly follow his pirate with your mouse, sometimes sword attacks backtrack you and sometimes they don't, it's such an unstable mess.
2. Hitting someone that is in the middle of an attack animation should cancel his attack preventing them to hit you but this is also very unreliable, sometimes you cancel their attack sometimes is just a trade.

While I enjoy naval fighting a lot, Pirate vs Pirate PvP is currently broken and unstable as your tools are unreliable.

Tested last night, after second update. Attacking player gets the block animation. Blocking player takes full damage.

This isn't good.

This update in particular has broken sword blocking. It simply does not work at any time. The attacker gets the block audio notification, but damage rolls right on through. Currently, you CANNOT block with sword.

Can confirm, still broken.

Think it applies to npc enemies too. I did a couple of sea fortresses and all enemies go down in 3 swings, even when they block a hit.

Aye. When wonky mechanics have been in your game for so long that it's getting really hard to tell between whether a busted mess is the feature at this point or actually an update gone wrong.

@tenriak you are correct. I reported this on insiders before the latest release but looks like they either didn’t read my comments or couldn’t fix it in time and let it go through anyways. :(
