Okay, I understand not having a motive to dump more resources into an Arena mode that only 2% of the population played (although it is very possible & highly likely that arena mode wasn't played because of the state it was in)...
However, why couldn't it have just been left the way it was? I used this mode, knowing all the issues it was plagued with, strictly to practice my PVP skills. Took a break from the game & came back rusty as ever, & there's no more arena mode for me to try getting some of my PVP skills back.
I'm a solo slooper because I have no friends that play the game. & Open crew isn't a very good alternative. First time I ever tried open crew was yesterday & I was working on a FoF. My open crew member joined me, grabbed a keg, blew my ship up, then logged out. Needless to say, I won't be doing open crew again.
I go into Adventure mode looking for other ships to PVP. Spend 10-20 minutes looking for another ship. Then, I either find other players that don't want to PVP & will just sit there & allow me to sink them, salty as hell because they didn't want that or get completely demolished by sweaty players where I just sit there & get spawn camped until I sink or scuttle. Fighting those kinds of people don't make you any better. It really doesn't even allow you to get any practice in, either.
What I would suggest is bringing back arena mode, preferrably in a better state, but if not, it's better than nothing as it was... OR allow people to open up their own little private servers (as SoT partners are privy to) dedicated to PVP with their friends or something. The SoT Discord could have events & stuff going on for things like that. Similar to the "Boomer Games" held by streamer LDSylvr.
