Add a setting allowing us to change microphone input to nothing.

  • I play on steam, and currently, I cannot find a single method of preventing Sea of Thieves from accessing my microphone. I know for the Microsoft version of the game I can simply disable it individually in privacy settings, but I cannot replicate that for the steam version; my only option is revoking microphone access to all desktop applications, or disabling the microphone itself.

This is an issue because I use a headset that changes audio output to a significantly lower quality output when its microphone is accessed; if I want high quality audio, I have to go out of my way to revoke permissions for all apps, or disable the mic.

I don't plan on using my mic in-game, ever,

It really would be great if I could just prevent this from happening in the settings. This also happens to be a basic functionality in most other games that Sea of Thieves is just missing.

  • @arcantheum just set up push to talk… same effect

Also the steam version of the game uses the same settings via windows…

  • The game will use whatever input you have “set as default communication device” under the Recording tab in the Sound Control Panel. I wouldn’t change that though.

As mentioned above, the best way to stop it happening automatically is to turn on “Push To Talk” and set it to “Hold” in Sea of Thieves audio settings. Also, turn on chat indicator so you can tell when it’s active. PTT is left ALT by default, but you can rebind that to something out of the way if you never plan to use it.

I would recommend always at least having the option to use a mic - as the saying goes, “mics save lives” in Sea of Thieves.

The irony here is that the old adage, "loose lips sinks ships" also still applies. 😅

Yeah, sadly the mic won't fix a bad attitude.

  • @callmebackdraft
"just set up push to talk… same effect" The problem is the headset is Bluetooth and loses quality whenever the mic is connected, and the mic gets connected regardless of whether I'm push to talking or not. Of course I can just turn off my mic systemwide, but I am hoping for a solution that doesn't involve forcing me to turn off mic every time.

"Also the steam version of the game uses the same settings via windows…" factually false, there's an option in mic settings for Microsoft apps specifically, and then non-Microsoft desktop apps underneath. The difference is that you can toggle mic individually for Microsoft apps but not steam apps.

  • @arcantheum your mic connects to your computer not your game and what quality degrades because of a bt connection ?

  • @arcantheum i have both versions, steam and windows version. And both of them use your “default communication device” in de settings of windows.

The game in none of its versions has settings in itself for selecting which, if any communication device its using whatsoever.

  • I mean, you do you homie, but would dissuade you from being this hardline against using your microphone in game. The game is built around and is at it's best when player interaction is at the forefront

  • I agree setting push to talk is a temporary option, but don't know why your post is not getting support... This community really hates basic QoL changes rather giving elaborate work arounds...

There are so many examples of minor problems in this game that the community just defend the devs not fixing despite them being simple fixes most of the time.

    • Times in game not shown in your time zone (7 lines of code to fix in C++)

    • Areas you can get stuck without a way out (community says to use blunderbombs or alt f4 instead of rare giving an option to kill ourselves on a timer in the menu)

    • Recent was spawncamping in PL lair where scuttling ship does not help (can be fixed in so many ways, I frames, random spawns, small safe zone in PL lair...)

    • Disable sitting... (don't know why we are forced to have this enabled it bothers some players why force them to keep using it... The players it does not bother are so insistent this option does not come since they personally are not effected so therefore others don't matter)

    • And now adding disable mic to the list... really not that difficult for Rare to just give us an option to disable mic flat out.

And for some reason the community instead of supporting nice easy QoL fixes just say they don't matter... This is not 2008 any more where I had to edit some files to get Minecraft to run it's 2022 WE CAN HAVE NICE THINGS!

People do support the general idea but it goes deeper. I've personally put in numerous suggestions over the years for improvements to how the game handles audio.

Input and output should be selectable in-game, and there should be a way to test microphones (seriously, how does an indie game like Phasmophobia have better mic support in this regard?). PTT should be on by default, as should the chat indicator, for privacy reasons as well. Sea of Thieves' audio settings is one of the things that really frustrates me, and others. It's just not good enough, in my opinion.

Just because we're suggesting workarounds, doesn't mean we don't want improvements.

The audio quality for this game is astounding, IMO. As for PTT being default? That would utterly destroy any kind of positive social interaction - I can't even begin to tell you how quiet games with that set to default are, simply because many players don't even realize that they can change it...

  • @galactic-geek
I didn’t mention the audio quality. I am specifically referring to the audio support (the settings) and not the sound design or music - which are, by contrast, stunningly good.

I figured, but still thought it was worth mentioning. 😉

  • I have settings to put my default device through a virtual audio cable so that I can postprocess it to sound better and add occasional sound effects. Please add a setting to change input device in game so that I CAN use my microphone, as the default mic will not work for me.
