I think it would be a wonderful idea if each captain that starts whatever server on a sloop brig or gally, you could name your own ship! And if players would like to change the name they may do so somehow? But naming your ship or having a title for a ship would be cool.
Customizing Name for your ship
As above. People become creative in naming pets. Even finding ways use..names to sound bad.
So with that, (and this request has been asked since Opening day)
I suggest as always-
Use Preset names.
Ship name would always be setup as "THE ____(of the) _____ ____" or "THE _____ _____" or a single name.
Following how Shipwrecks names work, they can have a set of words we are allowed to mix and match. But of course two ships on a server can't use the same names combos. -
Second idea
Similar to how alliance names work. You go to the shipwright, request to name your ship. They give you three choices and you vote on favorite. That will be your name on the server. (I would also add a fee to this) This would allow Rare to come up with newer names and a pile of them to be randomized.

Yeah, people just like to cheese stuff. Probably the reason why we still can't write custom messages in bottles and have them flow around the seas, or somewhere on outposts.
Specifically for pet naming, I remember when Arena's voice and message chats got permanently muted, TDMers would just name their pets and spam their names trough the automated reader, in order to find other TDMers.
